Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I'm going to a talk by Alice Roberts tomorrow, what should I ask her?

She's speaking at the British Science Festival tomorrow at Warwick University, I got myself a ticket only because there's been some controversy about things she's written/shared on Twitter. If there is an opportunity to ask her some questions after her talk ( which is about the perfect body, ironically), what do you think I should ask her? TBH I feel like standing up and asking her if I'm a woman, just to see what she says...

What a bizarre tweet when she linked to the thread herself yesterday Confused

Perhaps she has people that tweet on her behalf and she doesn't read what they say. And that's a kind interpretation

SirVixofVixHall · 12/09/2019 09:05

I am starting to agree with LordProffekko that she is a man’s woman, who doesn’t like other women much, unless she can feel superior to them in some way.
Also the hyperbole- “stalkerish”
Hmm

ThePurported · 12/09/2019 09:03

I am cringeing on Alice's behalf.
So...
Yaniv is a woman
Karen White is a woman
Beardy Alex from Stonewall is a woman

...but trans people in sports are not women? Why?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 12/09/2019 09:00

So she/Xi/whatever things that men shouldn’t be in women’s sports... has someone alerted The Cyclist?

nettie434 · 12/09/2019 08:53

Corvid, you seem reasonable and polite. I would genuinely welcome discussion from those with differing viewpoints, and hope you come back to talk more

Agree! Also, there are many other topics we could talk about.

littlbrowndog · 12/09/2019 08:49

So men who identify as women are not ok in sport

Why

I wonder how someone can justify that in their head🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 12/09/2019 08:43

Will you be in the front row wearing a deer stalker hat and all in camouflage? False moustache and hiding behind a copy for the FT with eye holes cut out (‘just call me The Count...’).

I think dimwit is enjoying this. Some people love a melodrama.

FamilyOfAliens · 12/09/2019 08:40

Thanks for the heads-up

So fawning.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 12/09/2019 08:40

How the hell is it stalkerish?
Op has bought a ticket to a public event, it's hardly ambushing her at home.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 12/09/2019 08:38

Human is 😂 humanist.

Gotta love autocorrect. My arse is human btw...

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 12/09/2019 08:37

She is an idiot. She will soon realise that her new friends will turn and maul the minute she puts a foot wrong, asks a simple question, or calls a he a she.

Human is my arse. maleist more like. The worst type of woman.

Cwenthryth · 12/09/2019 08:35

Alice Roberts has (rather unkindly, IMO) called the OP ‘stalkerish’. That’s not nice, Alice.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 12/09/2019 08:31

What is a woman? What is female? What is feminine? What is gender?

What is a bigot? It would appear that there days it is anyone who doesn’t agree 100% with any batshit theory put out there.

Why is it wrong to question a male bodied person who decides that they are a woman - when there are biological observances/tests to prove otherwise - when they cling to an almost religious like zeal that you have to take their decree ‘on faith’?

When people resort to violence and intimidation in their argument it demonstrated the flimsyness of their ‘argument’.

Explain please.

redchocolatebutton · 12/09/2019 08:27

a bit late maybe but the fairplay for women leaflets are great for leaving in strategic spaces.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 12/09/2019 08:27

I did, once upon a time, think the transrights movement was all fine and dandy. Until Munroe Bergdorf told me that mention of 'vagina' was exclusionary, and then I started thinking something was up, and then I started questioning. I am still questioning, and will continue to do so.

I really don't think I'm a bigot, check myself every now and again and so far haven't found any hatred for anyone. Just anger that women are told, over and over, what we can and can't say, think, and do, and how we must behave in order not to upset people, and that our upset is not valid, merely 'bigotry'.

I have sympathy for those who have dysphoria. But I can't collude in lies and misinformation and oxymoronic mantras like 'transwomen are women'.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 12/09/2019 08:23

Any graffiti? I have a sharpie in my bag...

yulet · 12/09/2019 08:13

Warwick has totally drunk the kool aid by the way - a friend sent me a picture of a "ask everyone their pronoun" poster stuck up in all staff kitchens.

yulet · 12/09/2019 08:12

I doubt she'll allow questions. Although she might be enjoying the rare fuss and attention really and doubling-down - how often is she going to say anything remotely controversial after all?

I'd be very interested to see how she'd feel about Women in STEM scholarships ALL going to men who identify as women. I expect she'd have a twinge of thinking the same way as she does about sports.

I expect she assumes like many people do that there are checks and boundaries, and no one lies or abuses the system.

DickKerrLadies · 12/09/2019 07:54

If GC feminists are aligned with the far right, and most GC feminists come under Stonewall's trans umbrella, does that mean that trans people are aligned with the far right?

FamilyOfAliens · 12/09/2019 07:44

That tweet Shock

Does she actually hate some women or just the ones who have never been men?

DoctorTwo · 12/09/2019 07:42

Hello Alice, under what circumstances do you think lesbians should accept penis?

Do you believe lesbians can have penises? I don't, but I'm only educated to A Level, so I'm a thicko.

DickKerrLadies · 12/09/2019 07:35

The thing is, she's not even consistent. She accepts that sport may be a special case. Why would it be a special case? Well, biology.

So she knows TW aren't W. But is frantically trying to shore up the house of cards. I think that's called cognitive dissonance.

Exactly this.

I feel sorry for kids whose mum is merrily trotting out that line. God helps the daughters who like playing with cars of the boys who like dolls...

sashh · 12/09/2019 07:20

Ask her if she is intentionally making her university a laughing stock.
