I wonder what the viewing figures are, for stuff like this: www.jeaniefinlay.com/seahorsefilm

I’m not going to watch it, for a start.

A hypothetical musing follows, not specific to the subject of the documentary, so please don't delete, MNHQ, as I'm following guidelines and not 'misgendering' a specific person.

What could have happened in a young woman's life to cause such a visceral rejection of her own femaleness? The gargantuan effort that must be exerted to maintain that baseless delusion.

I have ovaries like all them - but I'm not like them
I have a uterus like them - but I'm not like them
I menstruate like them - but I'm not like them
I am pregnant like them - but I'm not like them
I give birth through my vagina like them - but I'm not like them

What must she force herself to imagine women are like, to maintain that she is not?
What imaginary traits does she dream we all share that disgust her so, that she must reject?

This imaginary, invisible, indescribably repulsive femaleness that must be foisted upon others, in order for one to reject it for oneself.

What is its nature, this horror, this rejectable femaleness that surpasses ovaries and uteruses?

I really like Freddie, thought he came across really well. The whole programme made me feel so sad though - the way he was talking at the end was how a mother talks about her child, and the experience he has been through is entirely female and he knows that,he just wanted to be a parent.

CoolCarrie · 10/09/2019 22:49

I agree with you MildThing.

HollowTalk · 10/09/2019 22:48

Just about to watch this. I couldn't believe the article in The Guardian that ran with the headline "Man gives birth." Unbelievable.

MildThing · 10/09/2019 22:48

“Sad to see Freddy assume the child's gender, literal violence on one so young “

Freddie is not all Trans people. Freddie is not attacking women’s sex based rights as a TRA, so why reference stuff that TRAs say?

Justhadathought · 10/09/2019 22:47

Very interesting, and very brave of Freddie to expose themselves to scrutiny in this way.

Most new parents are naive, in the extreme, until confronted with the very visceral reality of pregnancy, childbirth and an actual living child.

Interesting how much effect stopping hormones ( testosterone) had. I felt that Freddie, for a large part, was trying, desperately, to separate from the experience, hence feeling like an alien ( I think we can all relate to that if we have been pregnant, though). However, there was the extra burden of trying to maintain his 'hard' 'masculine' self - in the face of the overwhelming soft surrender of pregnancy - and the whole process of ante-natal care, in which your body is no longer your own.

The birthing was powerful and there was such a strong bond with the child. Shame that there were no breasts to suckle......The fact that Freddie was going to start on testosterone immediately is a concern, I feel. I do think that this may impinge on the strong bond that s/he feels for her child; and once again insert hardness/boundary/separation.

i can't help but wonder whether Freddie will eventually end up de-transitioning, or else if the grandmother will end up, effectively, bringing up the child. The dissonance of maternal instinct and feeling set against a determination to be 'male' - and all that suggested about exterior focus and separation from feeling.

Being a single parent is not the easiest thing in the world either. and a child searches for and needs a mother, as well as a father. Does Freddie really want to be a father, when the instincts scream 'mother'.
I'm worried about taking up testosterone once more.

MildThing · 10/09/2019 22:44

He loves as a man and still has the reproductive capacity of a female. Not traditional but so what?

Didn’t we campaign to escape being shackled to tradition?

He was obviously avoiding feminine presentation from a young age, from some of the early film and photos. Later in life he took testosterone and had top surgery.

He hasn’t pussy footed around with self id without going through a physical transition.

He supported a feminist view of the politics of pregnancy, commenting on how things would be different if it was men who typically got pregnant.

I am GC. Freddie is a million miles from McKinnon et al

Freddie is a Transman, with a longing to be a parent.

Simple.

His Mum was wonderful.

ladyvimes · 10/09/2019 22:42

I thought it quite telling when he said the baby was an extension of him.
Found the whole program really quite sad. Definitely seems like Freddie has some sort of mental illness.

Ohmydaysmate · 10/09/2019 22:41

If he gave up work before he was showing the pregnancy, did I miss the part about him working from home or how he was supporting himself and the bump/baby?

And did they (CJ/Freddie) say in the beginning they were just friends who were having a baby together? I didn't get their relationship.. were they friends with benefits or just mates they clearly we not in love, well in my eyes.

GrinitchSpinach · 10/09/2019 22:38

Is this not the Guardian journo who sued to be listed as the father on the birth certificate? If only R0 were around she’d have the link tout de suite. I will look...

CoolCarrie · 10/09/2019 22:38

I think Freddy is a very confused person, however , at least that beautiful baby is dearly loved by his family.

tartantroosers · 10/09/2019 22:36

Entitled little shit is now giving his mother a hard time about cleaning dog shit off the carpet. Oh my Gohhhhd- it's sooo stressful. If we have a war, we're all fucked.

CoolCarrie · 10/09/2019 22:35

Do you notice the documentary was part funded by The Guardian? Right at the end in the credits.

SleeplessWB · 10/09/2019 22:35

I actually felt really sad for Freddy, which I didn't expect to. At the end was talking just like a mum but already going back on testosterone & perhaps realising that it wasn't so simple as just having a baby and going back to being a 'man'.

HopeClearwater · 10/09/2019 22:30

Transcript: me me me me me me me me

Good thing ‘me’ is gender neutral. At the moment anyway

Confused
ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 10/09/2019 22:30

Freddy can't because they had their breasts removed, and Freddy is a single parent. Seemed to have a freezer full of donor breast milk though.

Sad to see Freddy assume the child's gender, literal violence on one so young Sad

unitednations · 10/09/2019 22:29

Don't think Freddie had any female breasts. Got them removed ??

EleanorReally · 10/09/2019 22:28

Yup, no breastfeed, how bizarre

SwedishEdith · 10/09/2019 22:26

I've only been half-watching but could they not breastfeed?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 10/09/2019 22:25

Sad to see Freddy's poor baby forcibly assigned a sex at birth by the bigoted midwife.

unitednations · 10/09/2019 22:24

No breastfeeding then ! Ffs.

unitednations · 10/09/2019 22:23

How can you say that you are a male trapped in a female body then fucking give birth ?

Melroses · 10/09/2019 22:17

turned it on, thought it was about seahorses

There was not much else on - would have liked a programme about seahorses. I expect you are not the only one. Still, they would probably have got eaten or something Sad

GrimSisters · 10/09/2019 22:16

If you can grow a baby, you are a woman. A boring, self obsessed, opining twat, is just that, whatever their sex.

tartantroosers · 10/09/2019 22:15

Barber: "what I'm going to try and do is make a bit more transition "
If that were possible.
