Furries & gimp masks at Surrey Pride

It was Surrey's first Pride recently and yet again people with sexual fetishes are latching on.

I consider myself fairly liberal - I don't give a monkeys if people want to be Furries or wear gimp masks with their own consensual sexual partners.

But nobody is discriminated against on the basis of wearing a gimp mask in their own home Hmm

Why has this suddenly become a thing? What does it even have to do with Pride anyway?

In looking for an answer to what flag the person in the photo is draped in, I came across this blog, which explains lots of different 'pride flag' designs... among them 'master/slave/ownership pride' and 'adult baby / diaper lovers pride' which features a big safety pin HmmAngry🤮

Surrey Pride this year was also in a park with a large children's playground etc.
Next year it probably will be in a less "child centred" park.
But I think people need to decide if they want a "family friendly" event or a fetish friendly event. Both are okay but cannot be the same thing.

(Most gay parents I know wouldn't want their children at a fetish event.)

PencilsInSpace · 10/08/2019 20:10

I am pleasantly surprised that Rhondda Pride even attempted to make a stand. That's a first, isn't it?

Pride needs to decide what it is and who it is for.

Either invite fetishists (if you must) or invite children. Anybody who thinks it's appropriate to invite both is dangerous.

I realise the leathermen have been going for ever but it used to be just them, they used to wear far more clothes and it was never plugged as a family event.

OooErMissus · 10/08/2019 19:52

this is supposed to be ok and you're a bigot if you express distaste or have a problem with this

People need to start claiming these words.

Yes, I am a bigot when it comes to people using, for example, Pride to parade their fetishes in front of children.

Yes, I am clearly transphobic, in that I don't agree with self-ID, male-bodied people competing against women in sports, coming into our spaces, etc,

Yes, I am. And I'm happy to own it.

We are being silenced by these words, and that's very much to our detriment.

We can't, and that's the end goal.

It's all very sinister. I hope collectively the government, police and charities wake up and see what it is they are enabling.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 10/08/2019 19:20

how can we protect children if the police, charities and organisations are actively trying to introduce them to fetishes and transgender ideology?

We can't, and that's the end goal.

AnotherAdultHumanFemale · 10/08/2019 19:18

According to 'Mr Leather Wales', "fetish is often an intrinsic quality of LGBT+ folks identities

I thought that the LGBT community had been trying to distance themselves from fetish for years so this doesn't make any sense. Pretty sure loads of gay men and lesbians just lead normal lives with their partners like everyone else and don't have anything to do with the fetish community. Seems like gaslighting to me.

You can't have it both ways - it's either an adult fetish march or a family friendly march. Introducing children to fetishes is wrong on so many levels, I can't believe they even try to defend it. The more I see of this stuff the more thankful I am not to have children because how can we protect children if the police, charities and organisations are actively trying to introduce them to fetishes and transgender ideology?

Michelleoftheresistance · 10/08/2019 19:15

How positive a thing is it to re teach society that LGBT people normally have fetish/exhibitionist sexual proclivities and this is something that should be openly celebrated and accepted as part of being LGBT?

It's homophobic/transphobic, and something LGB people fought against for decades that they were the same as everyone else despite a different sexual orientation. It's NOT an intrinsic part of either being gay or trans, any more than it's an intrinsic part of being Christian or disabled or black. Nothing wrong with fetish or anything else consenting adults do in private, that's the issue.

This is part of the 'queering society' agenda, and part of the mens sexual rights agenda, which is why we actually have someone in the NSPCC wanking in rubber shorts at work, taking photographs and posting it openly on social media and this is supposed to be ok and you're a bigot if you express distaste or have a problem with this . Its boundary pushing. It's all boundary pushing. With selfish disregard for the parts of society damaged by the individuals enjoying their personal freedom and the thrills of exhibitionism.

I have as much idea as to whether my gay and lesbian friends are into fetish as they have about me.

I don't see any particular reason why fetish should be more prevalent amongst gay and lesbian people than heterosexual people.

Propertyofhood · 10/08/2019 18:55

I just googled the flag - it's the 'pansexual flag'.

The pink signifies girls, the blue signifies boys and the yellow signifies non-binary. How progressive! How woke! Who says any this is based on crappy horseshit gender stereotypes!

PancakeAndKeith · 10/08/2019 18:51

Perhaps I am very old fashioned but I thought that pride was about love, rather than sex.

This is just sex.

Propertyofhood · 10/08/2019 18:51

According to 'Mr Leather Wales', "fetish is often an intrinsic quality of LGBT+ folks identities.

Is it? That seems like quite a homophobic thing to say - I thought that for years, gay people fought to try to get people to accept that their sexual orientation wasn't a fetish.

Does anyone know what the blue, pink and yellow flag draped around the other blokes shoulder signifies? I can't keep up with the different flags tbh.

OhHolyJesus · 10/08/2019 18:44

I'm not going to let this pass without complaint, seeing as I raised it several times with the council and with Pride directly.

Any thoughts of who I complain to now?

truthisarevolutionaryact · 10/08/2019 18:42

It's 'acceptance without exception' - as dictated by Stonewall and anyone who worries about safeguarding children is just a bigot Sad

Wiltshirelass2019 · 10/08/2019 18:37

I’ve been to a few prides to show support but it’s not family friendly. A man once showed me his penis piercing - unsolicited I may add!

YouJustDoYou · 10/08/2019 18:36

Plenty of 'Furries' are straight - so they're making Pride into a 'whatever gives you an erection' parade. Which seems totally outside of the point of Pride to me

YES. THIS. It makes me so fucking angry to see these men getting off on this.

Oldchrone what is it with the grovelling apologies when called out for safeguarding children?

“Just please be aware that families and under-16s will hopefully be attending. Once again we sincerely apologise and hope the community can find it within themselves to forgive us."

wheresmymojo · 10/08/2019 18:25

According to 'Mr Leather Wales', "fetish is often an intrinsic quality of LGBT+ folks identities. Asking people to avoid these things goes against the history and tradition of Pride."

I mean it's Pride, I'm fine with drag queens (not sexual) and some leather but full on gimp masks and furry stuff is a bit much for a family friendly event.

Also...people like to do all kinds of things sexually, and it's no doubt part of their identities but the idea that this means everyone needs to accept it being paraded down the high street seems absurd.

I'm not from the LGBTQ community - I wouldn't have necessarily thought fetishes were any more of an LGBTQ thing than a hetero thing? Does anyone from the community have any thoughts on this?

YouJustDoYou · 10/08/2019 18:24

The people wearing this are utterly taking the piss out of what Pride means. These men, and yes they are usually men, see only the sexual side and see aside as a route for access to that.

MargueritaBlue · 10/08/2019 18:21

This is what happens when organisers try to make a pride event family friendly and ask people not to flaunt their fetishes

www.walesonline.co.uk/whats-on/whats-on-news/rhondda-pride-costume-leather-lgtbq-16669665

I'm lost for words. There is so much wrong there- where to start?

OhHolyJesus · 10/08/2019 18:18

About 23 mins in a pup play bloke is interviewed but you can't really hear what he is saying due to the mask.

www.facebook.com/getsurrey/videos/596872014050299/

And replies from Stephen Ireland

  1. The event is family friendly and complies with the UK Laws as advised by our local Police force. There will be no nudity allowed and all entertainers, hosts etc are advised of the family friendly policy.

And

  1. People can come how they feel comfortable. Pride in Surrey are an inclusive event welcoming of everyone.

So family friendly means fetish is welcome.

MargueritaBlue · 10/08/2019 18:17

The dog masks are very sinister.

Personally I think all full face covering in public should be banned.
