Furries & gimp masks at Surrey Pride

It was Surrey's first Pride recently and yet again people with sexual fetishes are latching on.

I consider myself fairly liberal - I don't give a monkeys if people want to be Furries or wear gimp masks with their own consensual sexual partners.

But nobody is discriminated against on the basis of wearing a gimp mask in their own home Hmm

Why has this suddenly become a thing? What does it even have to do with Pride anyway?

@NiceGerbil I’m a small c conservative so as long as it’s legal (under U.K. law) and between consenting adults it’s none of my business.

Lots of religious groups would object strongly to pride, I support their right to do it (despite it seeming quite bizarre and pointless to me) purely on the grounds of freedom of expression.

On the same basis, so long as it’s not indecent I support people’s rights to dress up as a teddy bear or whatever floats their boat.

None of it’s my brand of vodka but at the same time none of its my business.

That’s where conservatives differ form leftists/liberals. Conservatives are OK with diversity of opinion where are the other groups are not.

NiceGerbil · 02/10/2021 04:46

Lol at cbuk.

Yes some sexual preferences are not tolerated. And it's correct to point out again that homo/ bisexuality is not s preference but an orientation.

I've read more than one argument by queer theorists and groups / individuals that use their arguments-

That paedophilia is-

A natural sexual orientation that is misunderstood and unfairly maligned

That paedophiles are the most oppressed sexuality

That if the sex between an adult and a prepubescent child is consensual then where's the harm

That children can and do benefit from a loving relationship with an adult

Etc etc.

So where's your line? They are the most stigmatised sexuality of all. Can that be fair?

NiceGerbil · 02/10/2021 04:36

Read first 3 pages.

This is yet another example of something that was for good reason being totally subverted. And other things for me.

Pride has become mainstremed and corporatised. An ex colleague was livid. He had gone to pride in early 80s when he was young. He said. Pride is about PROTEST. he hated what it's turned into. He went when it was a risk. Hostile police. Risk of violence from the public. Being outed by being seen could mean sacked from work. Family finding out and what that would mean. It was genuinely risky. How many of those who go now, would have gone then? How many of these pups and straight male fetishists? I'm betting none.
Yes pride always had an element of sexuality esp gay male. It was a fuck you to those who hated homosexuals. Leather etc has always been there. And why not? Remember Freddie in his skintight outfits, with no top and clinging jeans. And yes leather. And the moustache style that said hello I'm gay. Remember the bloke from erasure doing a massive concert in trousers with the bum bit cut out? Remember the video for relax fgs. Not niche. Mainstream. All gay men.

It was always there because gay sexuality in particular for gay men was always and still is by many. Seen as an outrage. And the 'scene' has always had a big element of open sexuality. So it's this is our thing, we know you find it deeply uncomfortable or disgusting. Fuck you. Protest. Provocative. PROUD.

now any kind of kink is a queer identify? Valid? Fetish? Straight men with bizarre inclinations are queer and need respect? Grown men dressing up in dog costumes and fucking each other? Whatever but in private surely?
And we've all seen pics with little girls and children in general engaging, being encouraged to engage with men in various creepy fetish gear.
Which brings me on to

Gay men and to a much lesser extent lesbians fought for years to shake off the child molester connection.
Now. Creepy het men dressed as fuck only knows what are merrily inviting kids at family friendly pride to pet them, talk to them, that there's nothing to worry about, this is normal and good even. This is my friend. He's a nice puppy! Would you like to stroke his fur? And we've all seen certain pictures as well.
They have colonised pride and subverting it to something really iffy. And it's harming gay men and lesbians.

Pride as an org have lost the plot. As has stonewall.

I'll also ignore your nonsensical post CBUK. I don't know why you think your fallacious argument should stand as legitimate in any way, but it doesn't and isn't worthy of further discussion.

This is a zombie thread. Why did you ressurect it? I wonder what googling led you to it...

NiceGerbil · 02/10/2021 04:12

Not RTFT.

The pic in the OP. As a general woman. I immediately think DANGER! get away.

I think it's the combination of the bog standard t shirt etc. Then face covered with frankly creepy mask. And something about his posture?..

Hard to explain.

I would get the fuck away asap if I saw a man like that.

CBUK2K2 · 02/10/2021 00:47

@PurgatoryOfPotholes No, it just differs from your ideological beliefs.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 02/10/2021 00:45

Okay, we'll ignore your post as it rests on a logical fallacy.

Thank you for sorting this out for me.

CBUK2K2 · 02/10/2021 00:15

@PurgatoryOfPotholes I don’t need to? I’m not saying they are the same thing? I’m saying people in one group that have faced prejudice historically should maybe be slightly more tolerant of others that still do.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 02/10/2021 00:11

Can you explain why it is not an example of the equivocation logical fallacy?

CBUK2K2 · 02/10/2021 00:07

@PurgatoryOfPotholes That’s your opinion on the matter, I disagree. One minority group should be in a good position to appreciate the struggles another group faces.

Personally it seems a fairly tenuous thing to attend a rally for either way to me, but then I guess people go to meetings because they have the same make or model of car.

applechips · 01/10/2021 23:50

I thought that for years, gay people fought to try to get people to accept that their sexual orientation wasn't a fetish

They did. And just when we have made so much progress in the UK we are now going backwards.

Being homosexual has absolutely nothing to do with fetish/kink, and it’s time LGB ditched “Pride” as a movement.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 01/10/2021 23:49

@CBUK2K2

Some people would object to pride, it seems a bit hypocritical for one group celebrating their sexual preference to try and ban others doing the same.
Equivocation fallacy.

The fallacy of equivocation occurs when a key term or phrase in an argument is used in an ambiguous way, with one meaning in one portion of the argument and then another meaning in another portion of the argument.

Here, you are using sexual preference to refer to both
i) sexual orientation, which is the sex class(es) of people one is sexually attracted to, i.e. homosexuality, heterosexuality and bisexuality, and;

ii) sexual preference as in what you like to do with a sexual partner in order to achieve orgasm.

These are actually very different things, which is why precise language helps.

Knowing/inferring someone else's sexual orientation is the natural result of people of all orientations being allowed to live their lives on equal terms. For example, even the most dense among us realise that Mrs Betty Dean-Smith and Mrs Anne Dean-Smith are either lesbian or bisexual, whether they go to Pride with banners says "Lesbians of Milton Keynes" or not. It is appropriate to know that other adults are in long-term relationships with each other and share property.

That is a very different thing from finding out what the Dean-Smiths do in bed, not that Betty and Anne would ever tell you. (In your dreams, mate!)

Please do not conflate these again, it's horrifyingly homophobic.

The comments are worth the share I thought. The knee pads are for protection when crawling on all fours I believe.

So many Facebook posts. So little punctuation.

Mumsnet has really spoiled me! Grin

Check the comments. I think there are a few from the organisers.

Re: the ubiquitous of the Rainbow flag whenever Pride rolls around, I think it's going to end up being a bit like the situation with wearing a British Legion poppy in November.

StealthPolarBear · 13/08/2019 16:31

I feel sick at where this is gooig, all as described on this thread.
Also why do we have drag queen story time? If a man who wears a dress, make up, hair etc is also a story teller, fine but why do we need stories specifically by drag Queens?

OhHolyJesus · 13/08/2019 15:56

Has anyone got a resource as to why children shouldn't see fetishes? It's obvious I know but in an ideal world I could directly quote a formal, recognised document in something I'm following up.

I'm wondering if there are rules around the display of fetishes at festivals, quite honestly I'm concerned that the law seems to protect against nudity but as has been shown that you can be fully clothed and still be displaying a sexual fetish in front of children.

OnlyTheTitOfTheIceberg · 13/08/2019 15:52

My fetish is robust and appropriate safeguarding of children and upholding the rights of women. Yes, I'm kinky that way. Can I have a little love and respect and inclusion for my fetishes now please?

OhHolyJesus · 13/08/2019 14:46

Just leaving this here - WTAF is going on with broadcasters?

2BthatUnnoticed · 13/08/2019 10:40

I wouldn’t let my child interact with someone in fetish gear!

Terrible thought - once “drag story time” is normalised, will the human pups move in to hold story time? Or a master & slave combo perhaps?

Propertyofhood · 13/08/2019 10:15

At London Pride 2018 there was a toddler with his parents next to me. The kid kept petting me and laughed every time I made noises at him. Kids dont care. Kids think it’s like a real dog. Kids just wanna pet the pups and play with them. Kids learn hate and rejection from parents.

Just.... Ew....

Why the fuck do children need to be accepting of blokes who get their rocks off by dressing up as a dog? In fact, why do adults need to be accepting of this?

No one even needs to know about your dog fetish, mate! Do what you want in the privacy of your own home, whatever does it for you, but keep it there. If no one knows, no one cares.

LangCleg · 13/08/2019 10:05

Dear Person who said this: Yes, we know children think it's like a real dog. That's why you shouldn't be near them. We don't break down children's boundaries for a reason. You are that reason.

morningtoncrescent62 · 13/08/2019 09:54

Also, don't these people attend universities? Do they ever learn facts, science, history these days or do they just sit around making up new genders and flags?

Universities (or some parts of some universities) are very much part of the problem. I'm sure it's not all disciplines, but lots of philosophy, literature, sociology and other such departments now teach postmodern doctrines - which as far as I can tell involves disputing the authority of any factual information at all. I came across this transcript of an interview with Susan Cox which explains it very well (link to the original interview on the page if listening is easier for you).
