Issues facing woman and girls worldwide

Thought it could be useful to raise awareness of issues facing woman and girls worldwide and discuss what we can do to help them.

Please do feel free to add to the list also as there will be loads that I’ve missed.

It made me very angry writing and researching this:

FGM - ‘the ritual cutting or removal of some or all of the external female genitalia. The practice is found in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and within communities from countries in which FGM is common’

FGM is still practiced within the UK and is of course illegal here, we have only had one successful prosecution since it was made illegal and it was February this year - www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-england-47094707

Girls are encouraged to not tell anyone about it, awareness for the communities and those around them is the only way we can end FGM here. With wider efforts needed accords the globe.

Safe access to abortion - this is not just something that happens in third world countries, this is happening on our very doorstep in the UK! Northern Ireland has still not updated its abortion laws. Woman are being forced to continue pregnancies, even if they are raped, even if it was through incest and this needs to change.

Child brides - 140 million girls will become child brides between 2011 and 2020 . Girls who marry before age 18 are typically denied an education, at risk of complications related to premature childbearing, and more vulnerable to intimate partner violence.

Maternal health - The World Health Organization estimates that 800 women die every day from preventable, pregnancy related causes. That’s nearly 300,000 lives per year needlessly lost during what is fundamentally a life-creating event.

Sex based violence 1 in 3 woman Experience physical or sexual abuse in their lifetime. I’m not sure what more I can say on this than attitudes need to change.

Access to education A 2013 report by UNESCO found that 31 million girls of primary school age were not in school, and about one out of every four young women in developing countries had never completed their primary school education. That number represents a huge pool of untapped girl power: that same report suggests that educated women are more likely to get married later, survive childbirth, raise healthy kids, find work, and earn more money, among other positives.

Trafficking of woman and children This is the fastest growing crime in the world, it pulls in an estimated $99billion per year and there’s an estimated 25 million people trapped in forced labour, with an estimated 71% being woman and girls.

The thread is literally about issues facing women and girls worldwide. Or it was, until a bunch of people started derailing it for no apparent reason.

I think the reasons for posters’ questions have been explained in the thread.

It could look like that, but if you read the thread you'll learn that the op has a history of derailing and disrupting many, many other threads that has resulted in other posters being (imo) rightly suspicious of the motives of her posting this particular thread. Context is everything.

The reasons are apparent and have been explained, with clarity, multiple times. Did you mean to say reasons I don't like?

I posted in good faith several times early on in the thread. Cos I'm nice like that. I gave up when OP demonstrated she couldn't cope with pushback similar to that which she spends most of her time on FWR giving to others.

Earlywalker · 11/08/2019 15:07

SpartacusAutisticus I post under different names for the rest of MN so that precisely this doesn’t happen and so that I’m not ‘outed’

I considered posting this in my other name, but given that someone literally told me to go and start a thread on woman’s issues that matter to me this morning, I didn’t want to mix the two names up.

I hear a lot about ‘doxxing’ on mumsnet and I like being anonomys for that reason. I have children and a life, I don’t want my political views mixed up with the two.

I think that’s fair enough and I hope that we can all get back to discussing women and girls and the issues that face them.

We don’t need to turn every thread into a trans thread, there is no need.

I suggest you stop putting personal offence ahead of its topic and make a post that centres women and girls.

I'm not a GC poster. I'm a feminist poster. Jus' sayin'.

barelove · 11/08/2019 14:59

Can't help thinking if it was a so called GC poster that started this the thread would have gone a lot differently.

Erm..... yes, I think that's what we're all saying here Hmm

Personally, I'm a dreadful speller and am still able to write woman when I mean women. I rely heavily on spellcheck and obviously it doesn't pick this particular error up.

I'm grateful for the tolerance on this board that my spelling receives and I'm guessing that if it wasn't for the history and context here, Early's error would've passed without comment too.

LangCleg · 11/08/2019 14:55

Yes, because I dare to have an opinion that differs from the hive on MN

Honestly, Early, you're a lost cause. It's not a hive mind - it's putting women and girls before men without exception. I've given up hope that you'll ever understand it.

You can't centre women and girls by including XY, however they identify. You can't centre women and girls without considering the usually negative input of men. You can't achieve anything for women and girls by doing a quick Google and virtue-signalling links to charities for which you have not done due diligence.

Even on this, your own thread, you've been unable to react to pushback about your previous interactions on this forum or the dangers of Woke Saviourism by returning the thread to what you say you want it to be - the best interests of women and girls. Instead, you make it about yourself and how dreadfully mean everything is on FWR. You even ran to MNHQ to get them to move the thread instead of reflecting on critique, for heavens sake!

If you want the thread to right itself, I suggest you stop putting personal offence ahead of its topic and make a post that centres women and girls.

barelove · 11/08/2019 14:48

I might be wrong here, but could Helmet's point be that it's reasonable to expect that on a thread supposedly written to support women, the op would be sensitive to the need to get the spelling of the key word correct? The fact that the op got it wrong so many times rang alarm bells that perhaps the intention of the thread might not have been to support women after all but be for some other purpose?

Two suggestions have already been put forward:
Virtue signalling - trans allies must be alright as they are sooo concerned about women's issues (not just trampling women's rights)
Making the gc feminists look like meanies for not supporting such a 'worthy' thread

Helmetbymidnight · 11/08/2019 14:42

ive said that i couldnt understand why the op had a problem with differentiating with women and woman.

a problem ive never observed before.

op has since explained that the words sound the same to them and presumably to bespin too: they had both never previously noticed they are different words!

this is interesting to me as someone who likes, you know, words.

happy to continue replying to your posts.

DejaVulva · 11/08/2019 14:42

Thinking about it, the OP would also refer to 'man' constantly and not 'men', given that earlier use of 'woman'.

MargueritaBlue · 11/08/2019 14:35

Helmetbymidnight

You are a stuck record but well done on your counting skills. What point you are trying to make still escapes me- or maybe you really were so dim you thought the OP was referring to one, singular but unidentified woman.

barelove · 11/08/2019 14:33

Gingernaut

That was a distressing list of terrible things done to women. Is there anything you are doing already, or can suggest others might do to help prevent these things happening?

Gingernaut · 11/08/2019 14:29

Domestic violence.

The biggest killer of women and girls are their own families and partners.

They are either never born (sex selective abortion), dumped or killed shortly after birth or regarded as their families' property until it's time to marry.

Reasons for their own family killing them have been falling in love with the wrong guy, marrying the wrong guy, being gay or even just owning a mobile phone.

Reasons for their in laws killing them include unsatisfactory dowry payments, disagreeing with their sons' choice of bride or producing a baby girl.

Reasons for their husbands killing them include getting raped, wanting another wife, resenting an arranged marriage or 'just' general domestic violence.

Helmetbymidnight · 11/08/2019 14:27

Straight away piled in on spelling and trying to discredit?

i must reply to this, despite marguerite blue's obvious irritation. Grin

i have never seen an adult - with otherwise good spelling and an interest in 'womens' issues - consistently mis-spell the word women. 10 times?

never.

and then another poster - bespin - came along and did it too.

remarkable.

so as someone with an interest in words i am fascinated by this.

op has explained that they thought women was said the same as woman(?) and therefore spelt the same.

fair enough. now the op knows the difference which is good, right?

Trohmaniac · 11/08/2019 14:27

I think it's a shame that it's so hard to have a conversation about anything other than trans issues on FWR.

I would say trans ideology is intrinsic and key to many discussion fo women's rights at this moment in time - if men can identify as women and the very meaning of the word 'woman' is being expanded to include such men, how do we tackle any of the risks women are facing on a daily basis?

The trans issue is part of women's rights at the moment - to deny this is insane.

This board is about feminism and women's rights .. that is what the acronym FWR means.

Genderist ideology adversely impacts on women's rights in many ways so, of course, that ideology and its various expressions are going to be the main topic of conversation here, surely?

barelove · 11/08/2019 14:22

Early I've lurked on many threads and unfortunately, imo, you come across as a persistent derailer and antagoniser of intelligent debate. If I was to sum up my experience of your contributions to past threads I'd say you were unnecessarily argumentative and anti women a lot of the time. I'm obviously not the only one who's come to the same conclusion.

I'm sure there's way more to you and I'm open to see another side to you, but until then, I'll say it again - given your reputation here, it's completely understandable that you're not getting the support you'd like.

I think it's a shame that it's so hard to have a conversation about anything other than trans issues on FWR.

Posters who are apparently deeply concerned about being silenced and filibustered seem to have very little self-awareness (and that goes for both sides of the debate).

If you’re going to start a new era of on topic posting Early I think that’s super
