Your plan to overthrow patriarchy

New to MN since last month.
Can you please tell us here your plan to overthrow patriarchy?

I think the reason patriarchy continues to a very large part, is because of the rampant unpunished abuse and killing of women.
So my plan is that all women should unite in all democratic countries to ensure that feminist analysis of women’s and men’s behaviour is taken into account, so police do not ignore women's abuse and that the rapist does not go free because the woman froze in the moment and did not cry out, as an example.

An immediate action could be to start a UK Parliament Petition with a heading of – “The UK Government and the Police have a problem with institutional misogyny.”

Men are united 100%, there are no laws that benefit women and harm all men. But there many many laws that benefit men and harm all women.

My rallying call for women to unite was called vacuous, hence this question for all here.

I hope every one can say what their plan is, to overthrow patriarchy.

If you do not have one, can you say why, I will make it easier for everyone by listing some obvious possible reasons for you individually not to have a plan.

  1. Patriarchy should not be overthrown – please give your reason.
  2. It can not be overthrown by women – as above.
  3. It will be overthrown only by men when they decide for whatever reasons – women do not need to have plan.
  4. It will never be “overthrown” – the best women can do is make the life of women better in small ways – as has happened over the last few thousand years and you accept that it will be another few hundred or thousand years for all women’s suffering to end for just being born a woman. Women do not need a plan, just carry on as now. Pease also state your time scale.
  5. It will be actively overthrown but you yourself do not need to have a plan, it is other’s job to have any plan. Please say who.
  6. You will have a plan, but at the moment you are prioritising your own existence because of money, career, partner, family etc. – Please say how many years before you will have a plan yourself.
  7. You are actively researching and will be formulating a plan soon – please indicate a timeline.

I don’t necessarily want this to be a discussion thread among a small number, but want to know from as many different members as possible, as to their own individual stance on this question if possible, thank you.

If I was PM-dictator I would

  1. Make early year childcare a priority. Improve welfare for children so no woman ever feels the need to stay in a marriage. Generally economic and social policies which prioritise women and children.

  2. . Put nordic model for prostitution and ban making porn that depicts penetration/ regulate porn online (I don't know how)

Very true; I was earwigging what appeared to possibly be a first date earlier or something else of two young serious university educated types earlier.

The bloke proclaimed he was agnostic but had read a lot about religion and the reason for it. He cited an example of witches being burned because people didn't understand mental illness. Whereas today we do.

I bit my tongue and thought, well sonny Jim, that's not quite the whole story there but I'll not embarrass you.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/08/2019 18:05

Promoting secularism is generally helpful, as many religions are bastions of the patriarchy.

NeurotrashWarrior · 10/08/2019 17:48

I barely have time to meal plan let alone timeline plan for patriarchal smashing.

I'm challenging sexist shit when I see it at every opportunity and teaching my two boys what I can when appropriate.

OhHolyJesus · 10/08/2019 15:28

What's Grabsthars said.

Oh OP, really? Overthrowing the patriarchy by starting a petition to inform a misogynist institution that they have problem with institutional misogyny? That's given me a smile on this wet day. They don't care, that's kind of the problem.

The fact is that "the patriarchy" isn't actually a monster that we can unite to kill with swords and stuff. This isn't a game of thrones episode. It's everywhere, from the highest level politicians passing laws that harm women, to the doctor who dismisses female patients as hysterical, or the retail industry that designs products with men as the default user unless it's something connected to women's work. The problem isn't just institutional, it's internalised, to the point that most people can't even see it. And as long as we operate within a system that discriminates against women, there's only so much we can do. We can pass laws to give us certain rights, but as we're seeing now those laws can be repealed at any time if it serves men. We can criminalise certain behaviour but if the justice system refuses to enforce those laws then they're useless. You really think there are no "rallying cries" going on already for police not to ignore the abuse of women? They don't care. They just simply do not care.

But anyway. I'm not saying stop fighting, we should definitely keep plugging away with our laws and our incremental changes. But as long as our rights need to be specifically legislated for by a system run by and for men, they are only really on lone. At the end of the day the only thing that will really change anything is a global and radical re-conceptualising of what power, progress, success, and equality should actually look like. And spoiler alert, it won't leave men at the top. So, sorry to piss on your chips but unless you think they're likely to go for that I'd stop wasting your time looking for the fatal blow to kill the dragon and spend it finding more efficient ways to put out the fires.

Michelleoftheresistance · 10/08/2019 12:27

Overthrowing is in itself a patriarchal concept. Ending the patriarchy means conceptualising something different to patriarchy just being run by women instead of men.

One of the few positive things about this current ugly resurgence of male supremacy is the number of average, every day women who wouldn't have called themselves feminist or thinking much about it, suddenly starting to notice and realise that there are major issues associated with female biology, that equality isn't achieved, that this isn't acceptable, and are starting to talk, and meet and organise. Womens rights is starting to become an issue that isn't the preserve of a small group of people framed as a bit 'odd'.

So it's how do women make a difference in the world? What do they do? How do they get things done and organise together? It's often based in grass roots basic action.

TheInebriati · 10/08/2019 12:00

I think modern young women would be shocked to the core by the society I lived in as a youngster.
I think that's part of the problem, they should be aware of their own history and instead they are divorced from it.

There have been several attempts at petitions, for example to get the government to record crimes committed by sex not gender. I've signed those but I don't think I'd sign a petition to overthrow the patriarchy, it would be a situationist joke.

WrathofSWhlttleKIop · 10/08/2019 11:57

Ali1cedowntherabbithole

Apparently not.
There's a hierarchy dontcha know.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 10/08/2019 11:49

So my plan is that all women should unite in all democratic countries

Don't they need feminism in undemocratic ones then?

WrathofSWhlttleKIop · 10/08/2019 11:40

Well said Babdoc.

Babdoc · 10/08/2019 11:35

Storming the barricades and plotting bloody revolution to overthrow the patriarchy in one fell swoop is the stuff of fantasy, OP.
Reality is much more mundane, but does get results. If you’d lived as long as I have, you’d have seen huge improvements in many areas, achieved by lobbying, organising, consciousness raising, petitioning etc.
When I was born, abortion was illegal, marital rape was legal, there were no women’s refuges, women couldn’t get a loan without a male guarantor, contraception was only for married women, there was no Equal Pay Act, women couldn’t graduate from Cambridge, London medical schools had quotas to limit women students to 10% of places, sexist abuse was entrenched, sanpro couldn’t even be advertised on tv, women couldn’t be church ministers or bishops, school lessons were sex segregated so girls were forced to do cookery, not technical drawing, and trousers were forbidden at school even in winter. There was no Women’s World Cup in football.
I think modern young women would be shocked to the core by the society I lived in as a youngster.
We as feminists have made massive progress so far, and should be proud of that, as well as continuing the fight with our same humdrum old methods that get results.

WrathofSWhlttleKIop · 10/08/2019 11:34

I have a hobby horse and this^ is mine

WrathofSWhlttleKIop · 10/08/2019 11:32

I would remove the word gender from all official documents and revert it back to the correct word, sex.

And,
Unlike some, I would actually tell people what I am about to do.

Why?
Because I care about people especially women and children.

Teach our children. That’s my plan.

GrassAndDaisies · 10/08/2019 11:21

I'd make illegal the vilification of DV survivors, and single mothers.

I'd make long term community service for perpetrators of DV and sexual related crimes mandatory...

... And would drastically toughen up laws, conviction rates, sentences, etc for these crimes

I'd make dressing in drag illegal.

I'd bring in laws to properly even out equality between mothers and fathers.

I'd announce a comprehensive public enquiry into the trans cult.

I'd ban puberty blockers.

I'd block gender reassignment without full psychiatric assessment.

WrathofSWhlttleKIop · 10/08/2019 11:19

Let us all hold hands together.

There's a start.

Good luck

ErrolTheDragon · 10/08/2019 11:11

I think demolishing the patriarchy is like eating an elephant- tackle whatever small chunk is nearest you.

thatdamnwoman · 10/08/2019 10:57

OP, have just read this out to female partner and visiting female friends. Thanks for the laugh.

Who are the 'us here' you're referring to? Are you the elite squad of the women's army?

Deliriumoftheendless · 10/08/2019 10:57

I’m going to release exploding sex bots. That’ll do it.

Imnobody4 · 10/08/2019 10:54

Ditto LangCleg

LangCleg · 10/08/2019 10:45

Mine's to avoid making (patriarchal) imperious demands of other women.

YobaOljazUwaque · 10/08/2019 10:44

Most of my plan is focused on bringing up my sons to be genuinely non-sexist, to see the patriarchy in action everywhere and see the damage it does. I hope that this will be a small step towards a future generation full of enough non-sexists to effect real change. We are far too few in number for now.
