Horrifying TED talk on trans children by paediatric endocrinologist.

This was posted on Lily Maynard's twitter.

The callous way in which the doctor discusses the "elimination" of reproductive capability and uses that as an excuse to perform surgery at an early age is horrifying. She makes no mention of loss of sexual function or rather failure to develop sexual function.

Surgery on adolescents is discussed as a challenge to be met by pioneering surgeons. She almost seemed proud that she was great at her job neutering children she and was inviting the surgeons to step up and prove they were equal to her.

It's difficult to even find words to describe how wrong this is and so blatant, it almost feels boastful. I've worked with many Drs who would say that just because you can it doesn't mean you should. Is medical ethics out of fashion?

I find TED controlling and cult-like. If you want to spread great ideas, you don't rigidly control which ideas can be discussed - because that assumes that the TED organisers have some magical insight into which ideas are good or bad.

Also, everyone I know personally who has ever done a TED talk is a twat Grin

clitherow · 10/08/2019 08:22

This is horrific and only one of several bizzare TED talks that I have seen. Then I realised that I know nothing about TED itself.

It was apparently taken over by a British/American called Chris Anderson in the early 2000s after he made a lot of money in publishing. It is run from his non-profit organisation called the Sapling Foundation whose stated aim is to

foster the spread of great ideas. It aims to provide a platform for the world's smartest thinkers, greatest visionaries and most-inspiring teachers, so that millions of people can gain a better understanding of the biggest issues faced by the world, and a desire to help create a better future.

They license independent organisations to run TEDx talks and the competition is fierce to be accepted. In this article, one woman, who was turned down to give a talk, describes the process.

www.forbes.com/sites/morraaaronsmele/2018/01/12/the-myth-of-the-ted-talk/

It is clear that trans must be one of the "great ideas" that they wish to spread because just a cursory glance at the youtube sidebar shows several pro-trans speakers.

Interestingly, there is about a one in 18,000 chance of making it from TEDx to TED.com and so it is prestigious indeed to be a bonafide TED speaker. And who is on the home page of today's TED.com as a fully fedged TED speaker? - Nicola Sturgeon who is apparently

"an important progressive and feminist voice in the governance of the United Kingdom"

So progressive in fact that we all know that she is only biding her time before she can give full rein to doctors like the one giving this talk.

And why is Nicola doing this? because she obviously sees it as part of somehting she began in 2018 as

Scotland, Iceland and New Zealand established the network of Wellbeing Economy Governments to challenge the acceptance of GDP as the ultimate measure of a country's success. In this visionary talk, First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon explains the far-reaching implications of a "well-being economy" which places factors like equal pay, childcare, mental health and access to green space at its heart and shows how this new focus could help build resolve to confront global challenges.

And where are TED based? In Vancouver, Canada of course.

So trans ideology is obviously part of the ambitious Ms Sturgeons strategy to be a global mover and shaker to take Scotland from being the most drug-addicted nation on earth to a veritable northern paradise.

The point about not being able to tell the difference between males and females in a 6 week embryo is nuts (no pun intended..). All you see of a 6 week embryo on ultrasound is a heartbeat - you can't see limbs, let alone genitalia. But the embryo IS male or female from the moment of conception, as she must know perfectly well.

SpamChaudFroid · 10/08/2019 08:18

How on earth does she differentiate between the parent's wants and the child's needs? This makes a mockery of the oath "First do no harm".

Dare I ask what the other surgical methods are?

Bowel and arm skin are 2 I can think of Sad

XXcstatic · 10/08/2019 08:17

Well, that video will certainly be of value to Avery's lawyers in the future. Creepy AF though.

nauticant · 10/08/2019 08:09

30% are not able to reach orgasm post-surgery

I know you qualified this CharlieParley but just to add that would mean that 70% of men with butchered genitals will be able to reach orgasm. I don't believe it.

a doctor with a god complex is a good summary. The surgeons involved in this really do bring to mind Mengele.

Interesting that this doctor is a diabetes specialist who has jumped on then trans gravy train more recently. I'd like to be less cynical but unfortunately I'm not given enough material to work with.

Dare I ask what the other surgical methods are?

Sewing part of your colon, intestine or stomach lining (?) onto the base of your penis and shoving that up inside a surgically made wound, instead of just "inverting" the whole penis with the tip cut off.
There may be other methods that I'm not aware of.

NotBadConsidering · 10/08/2019 07:48

I don’t think it’s bizarre that Avery’s parents had a “sense” the baby boy they birthed was actually a girl, I think it’s pathological and abusive. That’s projection beyond what is ever acceptable. Just how does it work? How the hell can you “sense” your newborn will have a gender identity that doesn’t match their sex? It’s mental. And this doctor, at a supposedly prestigious organisation like Stanford, affirms their subjective feeling, and as a result, mutilate a child. This is criminal behaviour. There should be prosecutions.

NonnyMouse1337

This article explains the complications experienced by Jazz Jennings and a brief description of the surgical technique used. It seems that some part of the intestine was used to form a neovagina. The longer term effects of puberty blockers, cross sex hormones and early surgery remain to be seen.

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 10/08/2019 07:19

That is bizarre. The way she makes it clear from the beginning that the parents considered the child a girl with a penis from birth, and put them on a path of 'gender affirmation' all through being a pre-schooler and through to puberty.

NonnyMouse1337 · 10/08/2019 07:09

But that is only in penile inversion surgeries. All other methods have a higher risk of complications and worse outcomes in terms of function and satisfaction.

Penile inversion surgery is the least risky option? I'm quite surprised by that.
Dare I ask what the other surgical methods are? Shock

I’m two minutes in and horrified already.

CharlieParley · 09/08/2019 23:53

Having read a summary of the available research into outcomes of genital surgery in these males, what she is proposing is even worse than it appears.

The average complication rate in adults is one in three, ranging from light infections, urinary issues, bowel perforations to death. 30% are not able to reach orgasm post-surgery.

But that is only in penile inversion surgeries. All other methods have a higher risk of complications and worse outcomes in terms of function and satisfaction.

It's important to note that she is not advocating for performing the best surgery available right now, the one that has the best outcomes in terms of risk and function, but for deliberately choosing a path for these boys that leaves them only the lesser surgery with higher risk and worse outcomes.

What she is proposing is already unethical, irresponsible, cruel and inhumane, but she does so knowing she is closing off the path to the least risky medical treatment as well. For children.

Addendum: please note that the quality of evidence as to outcomes of genital surgery in adult males is judged to be low. There is a lack of research in the first place and a lack of long-term follow-up. Where the latter does happen, patient surveys use inconsistent rating systems and don't measure the same data across studies.

In other words, they don't collect enough data and the data they do have cannot be compared. In adults. IIRC there is no data about outcomes in children.

SarahTancredi · 09/08/2019 23:17

Well that's a fancy and sugar coated way of telling people that basically they have no idea how to make a fully functioning "vagina" out of nothing. Hmm

How the hell can she talk so cheerfully and hopefully about butchering children.

That dr needs to have her license revoked.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 09/08/2019 22:56

That is really chilling. The comments are suitably horrified - yet she no doubt carries on getting funding and mutilating children. Unbelievable.

TurboTeddy · 09/08/2019 22:49

Thingybob
Thanks I hadn't seen it previously but yes her delivery was rather stilted. I thought it was maybe rehearsed beyond her ability to come across naturally. I also wonder if she was nervous because of the controversial nature of the subject. There was polite applause at the end but it was hardly thunderous.

OP posts:
TurboTeddy · 09/08/2019 22:45

These children have no fertility to preserve which highlights how young they are when these decisions are taken. To compare sex organs to an appendix is a desperate stretch to make your actions seem reasonable. An appendix has no known use as far as I'm aware and is not removed unless it causes problems. Removing reproductive organs because you've chemically destroyed their function for no medical reason is indefensible.

Not a single comment under the video supported her point of view, one referenced Dr Frankenstein which occured to me as I was watching.

OP posts:
Thingybob · 09/08/2019 22:35

This was linked to previously and I remembering commenting then on how weird and robotic the Endocrinologist was.

I'm now wondering if this is because Dr Tandy Aye is herself transgender?

FannyCann · 09/08/2019 22:31

Fermats yes, it's the new Munchausen's. In fact it's a long time since I've seen or heard of any cases of Munchausen's -they're all being validated as great parents of trans children now.

How different life would have been for Anne Boleyn if only she could have convinced Henry that a boy without a winkie was a perfectly good sort of boy. 🤗😉

FermatsTheorem · 09/08/2019 22:14

Cross post with Fanny - you obviously saw this exactly the same way I did.

FermatsTheorem · 09/08/2019 22:13

Bloody hell - Avery is a girl because Avery likes unicorn back packs. Avery's mother realised as soon as her "little girl with a penis" was handed to her that there was something special and different about her child. Munchausen's by proxy, aided and abetted by a doctor with a god complex.

One of the comments says "MD must stand for Mengele Disciple." As far as I can see, there are no positive comments on this talk.
