What are your thoughts on this? Is it just me or, despite false rape claims still being extremely rare, the ones that do happen are now getting even more media attention and are treated even harsher by the courts?

To the women who start these “false rape” threads and the other women who come and proclaim that it should be acknowledged and the punishment endorsed by women.

I would like to know why women would do this?

Possible options

  1. You have a loved one who has suffered from this – if so – fair enough, you should do what you see as right.

  2. You are virtue signalling – either on a individual level or behalf of all women or all - on MN, you feel it would be better if outsiders see that you fight for fair justice for men as well as women on FWR. If this is your reason, I beg you to re-consider. There is already an untold amount of rapes that go unreported and even when reported a fraction are prosecuted and from those the conviction rate is minuscule. Please ask yourself if you are helping any rape victim, are you making it more likely that an extra one rape is reported / prosecuted and convicted.

  3. You have done, all that could possibly done to end women’s oppression and after succeeding against that, you still have the energy to fight for men, so they are not suffering as well. If that is you, please wake up, 35 calls are made to the police every hour by women for domestic abuse – how many convictions do you think result from thiese? Please put your energy towards the oppression of women, believe me, men are more keen then any women to punish a women with a false accusation. Men are doing just fine on this matter.

  4. You centre men and therefore will call out all injustice towards men. Please have a heart, men are the dominant class there is rampant unpunished abuse and killing of women by men. Why do you not want to support the oppressed? Men are united 100%, there are no laws that benefit women and harm all men. But there many many laws that benefit men and harm all women. It’s the women – your sisters that need your help.

  5. Sorry, can not think of any more. Any more? will respond accordingly.

Well. Most people seem to like news that feeds into the ‘evil Eve’ narrative.

Man murders his children “lawyer (or other positive role model) dad fearing losing access kills children in murder suicide” “neighbours said he was a great dad” “he was under great mental pressure”.

Woman does it: “Mother murders innocent children in their beds before stabbing herself. “She liked to go out partying/had all sorts of men round/insert something else that apparently good mothers wouldn’t do, said neighbours”.

I agree her actions were terrible and damaging.

A tiny proportion of reported rapes lead to a conviction but people are more interested in the successful prosecution of women like this one than worrying about only a handful of raped women getting justice.

Rare things always get the most news attention.

And it’s absolutely right that she gets the books thrown at her. She tried to wreck someone’s life, and in doing so she has fed rape myths. Despicable actions

Bufferingkisses · 02/08/2019 13:28

It's awful that, reading the news, you'd be forgiven for believing false claims equal or outweigh true claims based on the level of coverage they each get.

The comments on the article, imo reflects just that. That men (and many women) believe that an allegation of rape is as likely to be false as true when the reality is far from that.

Three years seems long but this sort of thing has effects not only on the victim, but on the justice system, so perhaps that element requires a strong response.

I don't think it's odd that these cases get attention, sometimes that's how it is with something fairly unusual. Also, I think in rape cases most people aren't thinking "gee that could be me being accused" but in a case like this it seems quite possible, and so that creates a level of interest.

She should have got longer.

But it's an odd thing. You don't come back onto the threads.

And the theme of false rape accusations is something you post about a lot.

I just wondered why.

traceyracer · 02/08/2019 13:21

If every proven rape case got a mention in the media, chances are there wouldn't be enough space left for news about much less

Habbers I do read replies

I've remembered it was on radio 4 I heard it discussed.

They also made the point that once a charge of making a false claim is made, that person has lost their anonymity even though they may go on to be found innocent of making a false allegation.

This is one clear case where a false allegation was made. It happens. It's extremely rare compared to the number of genuine rape cases that are reported.

The point, Decomposing is that these cases get more coverage than rape cases which are proven, which feeds a narrative.

DecomposingComposers · 02/08/2019 13:02

She did it though didn't she? So why shouldn't she be convicted?

Habbers · 02/08/2019 12:58

Is this the 4th (or 5th) thread you've started about rape claims and assault claims? But never come back to them?

What's the point?

Doyoumind · 02/08/2019 12:57

Have now read the article. Someone made this point recently but I can't remember whether it was here or on Twitter but yes, false allegations always get coverage. Rape accusations and convictions don't.

SalrycLuxx · 02/08/2019 12:55

I think it’s great. She wrecked his life, humiliated him, placed an insane amount of stress on his family and if he hadn’t had the tracker in his car he’d have his picture probably splashed across he papers as “another taxi driver “raped” young woman” while she got to swan around with lifelong anonymity.

False allegations wreck lives. I’ve seen it happen and I’m very glad the judge look it seriously.

Doyoumind · 02/08/2019 12:53

Sorry. Different false rape claim. I was thinking of the Cyprus one.

Doyoumind · 02/08/2019 12:52

I hadn't seen this update. I started a thread about it in In the News the other day.

Will read the article now.
