School changing child's gender

A mother posted asking for advice on the legaladviceUK reddit after receiving this letter.

This is her explanation. It involves Mermaids training the school.

She didn't get good advice because that subreddit is moderated by TRAs. The TRA mods tried to find evidence the letter was fake and they wound up deciding that it had not been photoshopped. Then, after calling Mermaids for advice on the situation, they locked and deleted the thread to stop the story spreading.

I hope I'm doing the right thing by posting this. I'd hate for the mother and child in this case to get hunted down by the media. But I hope they can access some help.

Just to note that I do not know who they are, I just saw the posts. And although the letter doesn't seem to have been photoshopped, there is nothing stopping anyone from printing out a fake letter and scanning it. But it looks legitimate.

I'm not sure that it was ever established if it was true. BUT, it is a fact that there are a number of parents who have discovered to their horror that schools have followed the parental alienation advice from trans groups and enabled their child to transition without initial parental knowledge. I know of two families and in each case it has been a totally devastating experience.
Quite rightly their focus has been on maintaining their relationship with their child rather than raising public complaints with the schools, which is why I suspect this remains so hidden. Awful.

SirVixofVixHall · 15/09/2019 14:37

Horrendous. I would pull my child out of that school immediately.

popehilarious · 15/09/2019 14:28

What happened with this? Did it turn out to be a fake letter?

DreamingBe · 01/08/2019 08:41

@Soontobe60, it's the Allsorts one that they reference. The latest version is on here: www.allsortsyouth.org.uk/resources/toolkits-booklets-guides

Soontobe60 · 01/08/2019 07:44

@DreamingBe
Thanks for the link. It won't allow me to download the toolkit, which is a shame as I'd like to see what it says. Maybe someone else has a link that will allow me to do this?

Oops, sorry, it's Manchester Healthy Schools who use the trans inclusion toolkit:

WhatTheWatersShowedMe · 31/07/2019 12:07

I'm not convinced it is genuine either. The 'forthwith' is a strange word to use in a letter to parents as it's not plain English. Also, it says 'see reverse for further information' but that page hasn't been included in the Reddit post.

allmywhat · 31/07/2019 10:12

It was not me who posted it to Twitter, no.

I interpreted the top left squiggle as indicative of headed paper. But the point about School Administrator not being an LEA post is convincing.

(However, the point about "obviously the other parent consented" is rather silly given that the letter is addressed to Mr and Mrs Surname.)

"I need help on x situation "

"Well you're not allowed any on here ,so go back to the people that might've caused the problem in the first place. No one else should try and help either, but if they do ignore them.
It's for your own good"

Hmm

Your entire post was about a different situation Bespin. Grin

truthisarevolutionaryact · 31/07/2019 08:49

I wouldn't disagree with what's being said about the authenticity of the letter. But it is relevant that the advice from many trans organisations (and a poster on here) is that this can and should happen in relation to children which is very concerning.

Billy21 · 31/07/2019 08:33

Whether or not this letter is fake, I am pleased it has been brought to the attention of MN and Twitter. It seems to me that Canada, New Zealand and others have sleep-walked into a nightmare situation with self-ID and the more that can be done to stop this happening in the UK the better.

RoyalCorgi · 31/07/2019 08:28

It is signed 'school administrator', indicating that a school has sent it, yet has been sent from an 'education authority' in Manchester according to the address on the right. If it were from admissions, which is the LA department that would deal with registration matters, it would be signed by an 'admissions officer'.

I think you're right, Soontobe60. This would be a school matter, not an LEA matter, so it would make no sense for the letter to come from the LEA, which has very little jurisdiction over schools these days. And a school would call the parent in to discuss the issue, not send them a letter with a bald statement like that.

Soontobe60 · 31/07/2019 07:42

@dreamingbe
The Manchester local education authority uses the same trans inclusion toolkit as Brighton and Hove
How do you know that? I work in a Manchester school and haven't been told that!

HandsOffMyRights · 31/07/2019 07:38

I'm appalled that the mods would contact Mermaids and then advise the mother to contact them.

Soontobe60 · 31/07/2019 07:38

That letter is fake. I don't know of any schoolroom Local Authority that doesn't have official headed paper with all sorts of logos on it, this one is plain. It is signed 'school administrator', indicating that a school has sent it, yet has been sent from an 'education authority' in Manchester according to the address on the right. If it were from admissions, which is the LA department that would deal with registration matters, it would be signed by an 'admissions officer'.
As soon as I saw it I thought it was made up.

Bespin · 31/07/2019 07:15

heaven forbid you think something might not be real on here Juells. I'm sure people will be along to tell you why you are wrong in a minute.

Bespin · 31/07/2019 07:13

to be honest OrchidInTheSun making things personal makes you look like a bit dim too.

Bespin · 31/07/2019 07:12

if its reception then I suspect the other parent will have either consented or requested the change. possibly this parent does not agree with that though it does not require both parents to agree on such a change.

KTara · 31/07/2019 07:07

In this scenario, the marker being changed would surely be gender (do any schools still use sex?) because the whole ideology stands on sex and gender merging and one’s gender markers being changeable (and seen as indicating gender identity).
I mean, our LEA uses gender, the NHS uses gender where we are - the whole point is the prevalence of the idea that ‘gender’ can be changed.

Juells · 31/07/2019 06:59

There's something about the word 'fortwith' that strikes me as fake. Like someone trying to make a letter sound official. Though I suppose there are people pompous enough to use it in a letter from a school to a parent.

Not convinced.

NightmareDaemon · 31/07/2019 06:53

I saw this referenced on Twitter last night, was that you, OP?

truthisarevolutionaryact · 31/07/2019 06:52

Bespin - schools have a primary duty to safeguard children. Changing a child's 'registered' sex without parental knowledge is a massive overreach and deciding that a school can remove parental rights / responsibilities like this is breathtakingly arrogant and puts a child at considerable risk of significant harm.
Like so many aspects of trans ideology, it is an adult view of confidentiality and privacy unthinkingly applied to children - and that is catastrophic for children's safety. Children are not mini adults - that's why the issue of capacity to consent is so important and nuanced in relation to children.
Schools deal with issues of confidentiality repeatedly and anyone insisting that a child can make this decision alone with no reference to their parents is professionally dangerous and should not be working with children and young people in a professional capacity. The only reason why this dangerous advice is even a thing is because parents don't have the financial resources to drag those advocating this to the Courts to establish case law.
