New PM, TRAs getting their group letter in early

The BBC write that LGBT groups and celebrities call for gender law reform.

Thinking FPFW, WPUK, and Resisters should get a letter in too, co-signed by shelter staff and similar professionally-interested parties

(If you want to find the petition, I don't think we're allowed to link, but it's called "Please join us in asking Stonewall to reconsider its approach to transgender policy", and the signers include people who were prominent in Stonewall at Stonewall's founding.)

ArcheryAnnie · 31/07/2019 14:33

If they want a list of LGBT+ celebs (and non-celebs) with something to say about this issue, they could do worse than look at that petition that respectfully asks Stonewall to reconsider their stance. I think it's nearly at 9k by now.

TemporaryPermanent · 30/07/2019 23:22

It's in the service of TWAW.

If you're just acknowledging something that's always been true, then NBD, right? Like getting a parking permit or something.

The fact that legally changing sex is a denial of history and reality which will never be a complete process because it's impossible, makes it a bit trickier to get done.

Sexnotgender · 30/07/2019 18:42

“It's an extremely bureaucratic process," said Ms Talbot.
"You have to gather years of evidence from employment records, identity documents and bank statements, and send all of that information to a panel who you don't actually meet.”

I was thinking about this today. They really are overegging it.
It’s literally the same as when women change their names after marriage, you change it with utilities, banks etc. Then after 2 years they send copies of documents.
It’s actually fuck all effort.

However, I wonder if these men have ever actually done anything like this? It’s ‘wifework’ and they’re probably used to mummy or their partner doing all the paperwork so things just magically appear for them. Now they have to do this one thing for themselves and they turn into Kevin the teenager because it actually takes a tiny bit of effort on their part!

ArabellaDoreenFig · 30/07/2019 17:47

Hopefully this letter will get short-shrift, I don’t think the Tories are going to capitulate to the TRAs, and they have outspoken gender critical MPs in their ranks.

SunsetBeetch · 30/07/2019 06:38

There are certain yardsticks now that most sensible people have. Most people don't think a male rapist, who can't even convince a well-meaning and probably quite gullible trans group that they are really trans, should be anywhere near a women's prison. (7)

Almost everybody who has heard of the Yaniv case doesn't think women should be forced to accept physically male people as women in all situations. This seems quite clear. If the trans lobby had any sense at all, they'd realise the game is up and start putting a bit more (8)

effort into thinking how they can help trans people without compromising women's safety, privacy and dignity. We know what will happen under self-id, as it's already happened. The people behind this letter know this, but choose to ignore it. It won't work any more. (9)

Just think how much could have been achieved for trans people over the last five years - better health care, kinder operation of the GRA etc etc - if they hadn't been so obsessed with attacking women's rights. Nobody has been served well by this. (10)

SunsetBeetch · 30/07/2019 06:37

Interesting thread on the organiser of that letter:

twitter.com/BillBaggins96/status/1155913538713661442?s=19

Ben Hunte reports on a new letter sent by "LGBT groups and celebrities" to the new PM calling for GRA reform to be speeded up. The letter has been organised by Paul Martin OBE, a man with a large beard who heads the LGBT Foundation in Manchester. (1)
t.co/lOclNQBlQc

Paul is pretty adamant that he wants any kind of gatekeeping removed; he is particularly dismissive of the need for "evidence" that the current gender change process demands. The only thing that matters to Paul is the "dignity and rights of trans people". (2) t.co/MX9dggYD7H

You'd think Paul might be a tad more cautious, given that his organisation has close links with "Transforum" - the trans support group in Manchester that was once frequented by Karen White. (3)https://t.co/MV0xh7mtvp

White made quite an impression on the people running Transforum. Here's Jenny-Anne Bishop (another OBE), chair of Transforum, talking to the Guardian after the White scandal came to light. (4) t.co/o4dCS6gNh1

Martin must know all this. He must know that even trans support groups doubted White's trans credentials, and saw White as a violent danger to others. But this doesn't stop Martin supporting a complete free-for-all on legal gender change. (5)

The point I'm coming to is this. The great failing of the trans lobby has always been that it is obsessed with its own interests and doesn't give a damn about anybody else's. I actually think this is not a wise strategy for them now. (6)

allmywhat Yeah, I picked up your sarcasm ball and ran with it.

People with disabilities in this country can legitimately and genuinely claim that they are "not allowed to just exist."

Likewise, refugees, Roma and traveller people, and, increasingly, women and girls. When eight year old girls are refusing to drink all day at school, risking dehydration and UTIs, because they have already been subjected to sexual harassment in the mixed school toilets and the school won't do anything, we can confidently state that Govt agencies (for what is a State school?) are not letting women and girls "just exist".

Yeah, the temptation to give the death blow to the 'Women' part of the Equalities Office might prove too great. The Cons hate it.

They'll change their tune when it starts affecting their wives and daughters, when a lawsuit forces their DD's private school to accept male-bodied transgirls. Problem is, it will take "their" women being affected for them to care.

All men view women as property: social conservative men see us as private property of our husbands and fathers (hence "giving away" custom during weddings); social "liberal" men see us as public property of any man who wants to help himself (hence erosion of safe spaces, cotton ceiling because how dare lesbians reject penises, and support of pornstitution).

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I saw a link to a petition, from the Safe Schools Alliance FB page:

Inquiry into the influence of lobby groups on policies about sex and gender

merrymouse · 29/07/2019 18:24

Wouldn't it be great if people didn't believe the government has the power to validate their identity.

allmywhat · 29/07/2019 18:23

So what, pray tell, is the Govt doing to disallow non-binary people from "just existing"?

Given you've quoted my sarcasm maybe I need to point out that it was sarcasm? Or were you just joining in? It is of course a completely ridiculous claim. And it's in very fucking poor taste that they use that kind of language, as if there's some kind of eliminationist fascist clampdown happening on "enbies" because they can't have an X on their driving license.

People with disabilities in this country can legitimately and genuinely claim that they are "not allowed to just exist." The comparison between what is happening to actually marginalised groups and the melodramatic whining of these privileged up-themselves wankers is... instructive. They love to appropriate genuine oppression and it's disgusting.

happydappy2 · 29/07/2019 18:18

I think the tide is turning-politicians are realising the very real danger to women, self ID poses....many of us are asking our MPs to repeal the GRA-it no longer serves a purpose-same sex marriage is legal. Predators have and will abuse any chance of men accessing womens spaces. Jeremy Corbyn stated TWAW and lost many women voters-this is such an important issue and we women will not shut up about it!

BigotedWoman · 29/07/2019 18:04

Dominic Cummings is married to Mary Wakefield, something (associate/deputy - apologies don’t know the meanings of these titles) editor of the Spectator. I don’t know whether they discuss these things, it may be irrelevant, but she’s probably aware of the issue.

Personally I think Brexit will still dominate and I doubt Johnson will prioritise something like this.

wacademia · 29/07/2019 17:56

This is not only invalidating, but having your own government not allow you to just exist is really painful.

I didn't realise the government was making laws against trans people existing. That's not on. Nazis etc. This is a major human rights issue. TRANS PEOPLE ARE LEGAL.

So what, pray tell, is the Govt doing to disallow non-binary people from "just existing"? Are enbies being ghettoised? Sent to prison camps? Gassed? "Disappeared"? Are enbies denied the vote, or health care, or driving licences? Are enbies being deported or stripped of citizenship?

No: they are not being allowed to replace their SEX marker on Govt-issued documents with made-up nonsense.

Good grief, these people just have no idea how fucking privileged they are.

Indeed they do not.

Or perhaps they do and that is exactly what they hate.

I'm never quite sure whether it is ignorance or some warped kind of jealousy.

ThePurported · 29/07/2019 17:47

It's going to sound like a winner to Johnson. It's well crafted to appeal to the Conservative instinct (bureaucracy, judgement of private lives etc etc)

Yeah, the temptation to give the death blow to the 'Women' part of the Equalities Office might prove too great. The Cons hate it.

wacademia · 29/07/2019 17:46

In fact, it's very obvious now just who Pride is for: white males. Some in dresses, some dressed as puppies, some dressed as little girls, some in rubber and leather, some in nappies, but all stealing Pride from lesbians, gays, and bisexuals to legitimise their fetishes and force bystanders to take part.

Ms Talbot added that for any other community to be required to prove something to a panel in order to be granted full rights would be an "absolute outrage".

Try applying for citizenship.
Or getting Disability benefit
Or becoming a parent by adoption, or a foster career.
How about opening a bank account if you have just arrived in the UK?
Or getting an Education and Health Care Plan.

Or applying for asylum/refugee status.

The Tory govt have tried to send lesbian and gay people back to countries where they are in danger because homosexuality is illegal, telling them to be discreet. I also note that (sorry, Pink Penis News link) Lesbians and Gays Support The Migrants and other LGBTQwerty groups that assist people of colour, doing vital work to help some genuinely oppressed people, were stopped from marching at Pride in London. Yet the outrage from white males is that the State makes them fill in forms correctly. Hmm

True, jacky, but the utter lack of awareness of anything beyond the end of their noses never ceases to shock me.

JackyHolyoake · 29/07/2019 17:24

these people just have no idea how fucking privileged they are.

It's patriarchy innit ... the domain of control by white men.

titchy · 29/07/2019 17:14

He'll do whatever Dominic Cummings tells him to do - he's the one who needs convincing about the effect on the female vote.

TemporaryPermanent · 29/07/2019 17:08

It's going to sound like a winner to Johnson. It's well crafted to appeal to the Conservative instinct (bureaucracy, judgement of private lives etc etc) and I doubt he's ever applied for his own passport, applied for any of his numerous marriage licences, changed his name on marriage, had a DBS check for work/volunteering (or the much more onerous precursor to it which took for bloody ever), applied for a job with an application form, applied for probate after a relative dies, gone in front of an adoption panel, applied for a benefit, had a formal appraisal or professional revalidation, applied for an EHCP for a child with additional needs or any of the other numerous bureaucratic processes we all go through because we're ordinary people in a complex developed society. He might have applied for his own driving license I guess.

But imo he's probably fairly GC at bottom. He needs to know it's a vote loser with substantial groups.

ThePurported · 29/07/2019 16:58

This may be effective, sadly. One thing we know about our new PM is that he is not a deep nor a logical thinker. Even his allies, I think, would not claim that for him.

True, but his strategists will be thinking about the next GE. It all depends on whether they believe this is a vote winner. Dominic Cummings, as much as I loathe his tactics, is an intelligent guy and unafraid to speak his mind. If they have any sense, they will let Labour own this issue, since Corbyn has already declared himself for self-id.
