Are feminists getting played?

It makes me sad that feminists are spending so much time banging on about bathrooms in a world that has women still working for no pay, old women still more likely to be poor, surrogacy, underfunded maternity care, and poor support for carers. And other stuff.

Yes, the trans thing is annoying, but have you noticed how it always fires up before major elections? It's like Afghanistan in the 80s when the US provided just enough weapons to keep the war going so Russia would use all it's energy and get weak.

I feel like feminism is getting distracted with the trans stuff. At most, it should take up 10 percent of our feminist attention. But I rarely see feminism these days that isn't all about trans. Seriously. Do you think we're getting played here? Is trans really such a big deal?

My analysis here is how much time and energy is taken up with trans issues. It's disproportionate. And I, like the OP, are wondering if this is an intentional part of the whole trans operation.

As I said yesterday, this section of Mumsnet is about Women's Rights, so it is, of course, preoccupied with anything that is a threat to Women's Rights.

[This section is sometimes labelled with the acronym FWR: Feminism and Women's Rights]

Is there a reason you choose to post on MN feminism rather than another area of social media, Sakura?

This seems like the last place where you’re going to get posters to prioritise other issues over being gender critical.

sakura184 · 28/07/2019 16:23

There are women working together in secret groups in almost every country in the name of feminism, addressing issues that specifically affect their female lives in those countries / continents.

Yes there are things going on.

This is a war, seeing it as such is being aware.

Just leaving this here... (poem post WW2 with some added words following strikethroughs)

First they came for the socialists intersex women, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a(n) socialist intersex woman.

Then they came for the trade unionists women of color, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist woman of color.

Then they came for the Jews infertile women, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a(n) Jew infertile woman.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

That's exactly what policy is for, to distribute money.

Rest assured, I would never report you, Maniak. Your view of the world is too entertaining to be silenced.

Datun · 28/07/2019 16:18

Which bit, Jacky? I honestly meant that maniak cannot now refer to who has the power over them, because it's women. They've just tried to, and they can't.

And it wasn't me who reported them. Whoever it was, I think it's a bit of an own goal. Because it's just proving my point.

But then, trans activism is nothing if not illogical.

JackyHolyoake · 28/07/2019 16:16

grinning at your sarcasm, @Datun! Grin

Transactivism and self I.d. serve to destroy the legally protected class of women -- you can't protect what you cant define and a class without boundaries is not a class.

That's why this is a top-down movement -- its goals serve the interests of those at the top, for instance those who don't like class-action lawsuits or having to answer questions about sex-pay gaps.

Anyone who thinks transracial and transethnic won't be next, and won't serve the same purpose, is kidding themselves.

The logical conclusion of identiarianism fractures all notions of coherent classes into individual self-defined monads, none of whom have any sense of or reason for particular solidarity with the other.

Ultimately proving Thatcher right: there is no society.

Identiarianism IS Thatcherism.

People choose to be accountants and still get paid to do it, so I'm not sure why choice is relevant.

But it is not necessary to pay anyone when individuals obviously freely choose to do it for free. As they do. Free market and all... This is neoliberalism 101, my dear.

Datun · 28/07/2019 16:12

@datun was it you who reported it?

No, it wasn't.

Someone reported me! That's hilarious. Wow.

It would appear so.

What has happened is that you have, in theory, offended two, or three very powerful women. Women in the public eye, who do not take kindly to you talking about their biological sex. And that is why the comment was deleted.

The comment wasn't rude, it was biologically accurate, and, I believe in at least two out of the three cases, legally accurate.

It just goes to show that feminism is becoming increasingly less necessary, when women have the power to rob you of any language that they deem problematic.

StopThePlanet · 28/07/2019 16:08

I know but if gender was rendered meaningless because of trans and then the biological sex categories were redefined it would not be based on gametes (which we can't easily observe) but on social and reproductive function, most obviously sperm production and pregnancy. I mean, I'm just imagining, taking trans to its conclusion

Great, now some women are redefining childless women as non-men and non-women via the TRA long-lens.

Thanks a whole fucking lot.

Not all women are mothers... some choose it, some don't have a choice (plethora of infertility reasons), and some aren't interested in being mothers. Not having children today or in a 100 years won't change the fact that sex is split between large (female) and small gametes (male). It really isn't hard to observe in 99% of people and as the lifetime owner (since before birth) of large gametes I am a woman regardless of what lens you look through - that is a fact.

Not all women menstruate (as in menstruators), not all women have all of their reproductive anatomy (as in uterus-havers), not all women have children (pregnancy). We are still women - adult human females and have a right to retain our words. As many of us have said if we can't define ourselves we are erased from protection in law.

TRAs like to tell me that they are the same kind of woman I am - insanely dehumanizing. If we ignore or capitulate to their desires the law will see me and any other childless woman as synonymous with TW (it is already happening).

JackyHolyoake · 28/07/2019 16:06

And we're still saying that on reflection it doesn't merit absorbing practically all of women's feminist energy

It isn't, unless you experience your feminism only via social media.

deepwatersolo · 28/07/2019 16:05

Unless it was a policy of paying people to do caring work. I suppose

But why would it need such a policy? Obviously half of the people are - for whatever reason - perfectly capable of choosing not to do caring work. It's a choice, isn't it?

Maniak · 28/07/2019 16:04

It doesn't.

JackyHolyoake · 28/07/2019 16:03

No I just think in the main it's about 90% trans and 10% porn.

Maybe try spending more time away from social media?

Social media is not all there is.

deepwatersolo · 28/07/2019 16:02

Please be joking.

Male violence does not go away via self-ID. It cannot be correctly labelled any more, and will therefore not be accessible statistically, but it will not be gone. There are women on this board who have stopped going swimming, because they feel threatened in changing rooms they have to share with men.
The whole point of sex separated toilets was to allow women to participate in public life without threat of male violence. You know how many women get raped in India day in day out, because they have to go pee in some field, no toilet available? Why do you think this will be different in today's West, when we go back to 'no toilets for females only?' You think Westerners are more woke and less rapey than Indians or what is your rationale?

sakura184 · 28/07/2019 16:00

There is no point in saying that without being able to link it to the defined term woman.

Yes we get the issue.

And we're still saying that on reflection it doesn't merit absorbing practically all of women's feminist energy

There are other things going on too, yes.
