Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Single sex toilets for men, and mixed sex.....nothing for women only.

My local town has installed a set of public toilets; men, and mixed. Nothing for women. I called up to question it/complain, and got a man who got cross and defensive, telling me that men who 'just want to spend a penny' (they are urinals only) use them, and save adding to the queues. So, men can jump the queue, women have to wait with anyone else who wants access to the mixed loos.
Does anybody know if this is allowed? It seems so wrong.

So happy to read this update! Well bloody done, OP.

Can’t believe the person you originally spoke to tried to fob you off (I work in local govt taking calls too.) You should complain about him. You never know who else he put off before you. And all calls should be recorded their end, you could ask a manager to listen back to the conversation.

Fantastic result!

mogtheexcellent · 17/08/2019 22:11

Oh my well done! Will make a point of using it. Not back until October though.

pinkcardi · 17/08/2019 16:16

Very inspirational that things can be changed. Well done

Oh WELL DONE! Star

UPDATE: From the council, copied below.

"After careful consideration and not wishing to get drawn into a protracted discussion I intend to make one of the mixed gender cubicles on both Sheringham east promenade and Cromer west promenade ladies only. Hopefully this will address the balance with one separate Gents and one separate Ladies plus shared facilities at both locations. Hopefully you will find this outcome acceptable."

I am thrilled!! Never expected this tbh. Grin

If you want to point them towards an other seaside town with better provision, I thought the loos at Perranporth were quite good. There was a room of mix sexed cubicles, a separate room of urinals, and another separate room of cubicles women only.

mogtheexcellent · 13/08/2019 14:57

well done! Ive left Cromer for now, not back until October Sad. The toilets were trashed when I left (not by me! I have to used the disabled), not sure they will make it through festival week tbh.

Update!
Russel Tanner has finally deigned to reply to me!! He has passed my email along to the legal department, as my email contains some 'statements' that need a formal response.
Hopefully this means someone will actually have to think about it from a sensible, legal point of view rather than just anger. Still wish I'd recorded that first phone call, I think he hoped he could scare me away. All he did was poke one of a nest of vipers 🐉
Thanks for any links, and advice given on here.

I questioned similar on a festival chat group once, asking for female only portaloos, since there are men's urinals and mixed portaloos, but the queues are so long for women needing wee I suggested some women's only urinals as an express lane so to say... Just a few that men haven't pissed all over and stink of shit. But apparently I was being ridiculous.

What your town has done is much worse, but sadly, I think you will struggle to find local support.

centrifugal · 10/08/2019 16:00

Still no reply from North Norfolk DC. Going to call on Monday, then start with a FOI request.
Interestingly, on the 'enjoy Sheringham more' Facebook page, a woman was complaining about the toilets on the prom being filthy, not sure if she meant these ones......I'm too chicken to comment.

It also puts men in a very awkward position, several elderly gentlemen were uncomfortable using the new mixed toilet and waited until the women and children were out. It leaves men in a position where they feel like they cant use facilities as they don’t want to intimidate women and or have their own health problems to deal with.

My DFather is 6ft6, late 50s, social anxiety and has bowel issues (obviously could use the accessible toilet if free) but would feel like he couldn’t use the toilets for both reasons above.

bd67th · 08/08/2019 12:03

I felt like I have to accompany 10 yr old DD to the loo when she’s more than capable of going on her own

Core to the whole transwagon is an utter disregard for families, both parents and children.

  • Children put at risk by dismantling of safeguarding? They don't care.
  • Parents placed under an additional burden to escort 10 year old girls to the unisex loo to keep them safe from predatory men? They don't care.
  • Mothers suffering mental illness relapses because of their transitioning children? They don't care.
  • The utter utter contempt they show for women and our reproductive role speaks volumes. There's a twitter thread I can't find where a woman talked about giving birth and a female non-binary handmaid said "So you gave birth. What do you want, a medal?"

This whole ideology ignores families as the fundamental unit of society and is incompatible with family-centred policies. I'm child-free and it's glaringly obvious even to me.

TheInebriati · 08/08/2019 11:57

I wonder if this might help, I was going to make a thread about it. Glasgow Tramway had to change their unisex toilets back to single sex for an event, showing their impact assessment was a crock;

''TRAMWAY bosses have been slammed as "exceptionally dishonest" after controversial toilet provision in the South Side venue was altered to accommodate a religious event.

Last month the arts venue came under fire for claiming there was "no evidence" new unisex toilets had caused problems despite police being called after an incident in the loos.''

Singleandproud · 08/08/2019 11:28

@mogtheexcellent it was only the restaurant toilets that were unisex the others were as they have always been but no one wants to trek halfway across a theatre building to use the toilet when they are having a meal.

EverardDigby · 08/08/2019 11:17

It makes no sense at all that women have greater need for toilets because of periods and kids that our provision is reduced. I can't imagine it makes business sense either, mixed toilets do make me think twice about going somewhere.

TriptychDebbie · 08/08/2019 10:57

Was very disappointed last week when I went to the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill to discover their toilets are now men's and unisex, with no single provision for women. I love going there as they have some excellent events, many of which are free, but am sad to see them pandering to a minority.

mogtheexcellent · 08/08/2019 10:56

Christ. Thanks for the warning @Singleandproud

My mum goes to the theatre in Norwich a lot and wants to take DD sometime Sad

Singleandproud · 08/08/2019 10:24

Norwich Theatre Royal restaurant toilets have been refurbed to shared male/female toilets with 3 cubicles so we have to share and I felt like I have to accompany 10 yr old DD to the loo when she’s more than capable of going on her own. Where the accessible toilet was has been refurbed into a ‘inclusive’ toilet with the trans and disabled sign. So trans individuals get to chose their own cubicle and everyone else has to share. I don’t think it was very well received by the double take reaction that several of the older gentlemen had when they walked in to find women queuing obviously not used to the new ‘woke; way of things.

FOIrequester · 06/08/2019 22:17

centrifugal Ask your local council for the Equality Impact Assessment that they carried out before installing these toilets. If you use FOI they have to reply.

You can make an FOI request at www.whatdotheyknow.com/ or look on your council's website for where to send the request. If you use whatdotheyknow your details will be visible to anyone who views the site, so be careful about privacy and what personal details you put on there. I've posted more about that on this thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3652524-Welsh-Assembly-and-the-lost-equality-impact-assessment

Someone on the other thread reports a council being forced to change mixed sex back to single sex after being asked for their equality impact assessment.

NigellaAwesome · 06/08/2019 17:23

Wacademia yes, one would think so. I did suggest this, and got shouted down. I escalated to my seniors, and eventually got my own key, but also a whole world of continuing abuse for having dared challenge their decision.

The army have some very strange cultural issues and warped logic at times. It was a challenging job working alongside them, especially as I was from an outside organisation and a woman.
