Misandry is a real word

This debate has always interested me. I read a very convincing article about ten years ago, written by a man, explaining why misandry isn't a real word. He listed the etymology and history of the word and so on. He was also an excellent writer and I admire good writing. I can't find the article. I will look again for it.

In searching for it, I came across a men's rights activism forum where they're discussing a thread by the title of "Misandry is a Real Word"

news.mensactivism.org/articles/02/01/02/1631228.shtml

Personally I'm with the writer of the article, but the men's rights activism forum make a convincing argument

No I said Misandry is synonymous with feminism. It's man-hating, innit

Misandry = woman being a big meanie online

OP posts:
LassOfFyvie · 21/07/2019 23:59

I didn't say misandry is synonymous with feminism.

LassOfFyvie · 21/07/2019 23:57

Misogyny has a meaning.

Misandry has a meaning.

There will be differences of opinion as to what actions or words constitute either.

Women who call themselves feminists are capable of being both misogynistic and misandrist.

sakura184 · 21/07/2019 23:48

I agree with you that the word feminist is meaningless. I did try to get people to thrash out a definition but it resulted in people saying I wasn't a feminist. Given that I'm your local raging misandrist, and misandry is synonymous with feminism- (or it would be if words had meaning) I found that strange.

I mean fuck it if the word woman has no meaning, how can the word feminism possibly have a meaning.

You seem pretty sure misandrist means something though.

So woman- no meaning. Feminism- no meaning. Misandry- has meaning

Actually god no, give me a man who says he isn't a feminist over a feminist man any day. I just cannot deal with feminist men.

OP posts:
LassOfFyvie · 21/07/2019 23:44

I'm not a feminist either. I think the word is almost meaningless. I think calling someone anti- feminist is meaningless too.

I see so many posts on FWR here from radical feminists saying liberal feminists are not feminists and so many posts on Twitter saying the opposite. I've seen it said that anyone who opposes abortion can't be a feminist and I've seen pro- lifers say they are the genuine feminists.

You called me anti- feminist. I don't care. You have called other posters anti-feminist and they have said the same about you.

I often agree with Dervel. I prefer hitching my wagon to ideas and views I agree with, not an ideology.

sakura184 · 21/07/2019 23:37

Thank you for reporting the post criticizing me.
When Dervel disagreed with me on my thread I did say "well you would disagree because you're a man" . Bear in mind Dervel told me he wasn't a feminist (not that I think men can be, but they can perhaps at least show willing if they're coming on here dishing out opinions)

I have to say if I spent time reporting people for their anti feminism, or even misogyny, which I regard as blatant trolling when this place is for feminists, I wouldn't have time for anything else

I've never ever reported anyone. I think people should just be allowed to say whatever they like

OP posts:
LassOfFyvie · 21/07/2019 23:25

You started a thread about misandry. I replied.

I always report posters who use the "you're a man" attack on another poster when they can't think of anything better to say. MN always delete such posts.

If you are angling to find out whether I reported any of your posts, I have not (unless you used "you're a man" line, in which case - yes I will)

I did actually report a post criticising you. I thought it was unfair, a personal attack and an attempt to make you shut up.

MN didn't agree as the post stands. I obviously can't tell you which post as that identifies who said it.

sakura184 · 21/07/2019 23:16

lLassOfFyvie

You seem very invested in who the misandrists are on the feminism board. Do you report them to MNHQ?

8 Adonis Mirror
😂 His article is the gift that keeps on giving

One antifeminist grievance is that “misandry” itself is under- lined in red on their word-processors as a misspelling: this they view as a brutal assault upon their psyche, quantitative proof that men’s lives are worth less in our society than women’s.

OP posts:
sakura184 · 21/07/2019 22:49

So a misandrist basically means a woman who is a big meanie online

OP posts:
Erythronium · 21/07/2019 22:47

Oh right, but words pop into existence all the time, with an etymology that may date back only a year or two. They'll still make it into the dictionary.

The problem with "misandry"" is it gives all the misogynists a chance to ooh and aah and claim women do it too, when that simply isn't true.

I don't think that there are any women who exist who want to exploit or destroy men the way a great number of men clearly want to exploit or destroy women.

sakura184 · 21/07/2019 22:44

He's making me laugh just by the first line
"Misandry: the dictionary of fools"

OP posts:
sakura184 · 21/07/2019 22:42

Am I being misandrist by saying that Adonis Mirror is the only man I've ever come across that has really and truly helped feminists

OP posts:
Hecateh · 21/07/2019 22:40

Of course it's a real word, it's a collection of letters that have been given a meaning. IE a word.

Of course there are women that hate men - on the whole they are totally powerless, their hatred of men is what it is, it has no effect on men (in general, although there are individual men married to women like this who do suffer). There are a few women with some 'power' who do spread this and it affects a few people it is true. Individual white people suffer from 'reverse' racism - society doesn't generally.
in the same way individual men 'suffer' from misogyny but society doesn't, whereas society does suffer from misogyny. Both men and women suffer from the effects of misogyny - the same as society as a whole suffers from the effects of racism

sakura184 · 21/07/2019 22:40

Yep that's the one Erythronium. Adonis Mirror. I remember now. Such a good damn writer. I'm going to read it again now. It's been a decade or so since I read it

OP posts:
sakura184 · 21/07/2019 22:39

Misandry = feminism, as a concept no?

But we're not talking about the concept of misandry ( man-hating) on this thread. That would be a derail

We're talking about the etymology of the word misandry. There are arguments for and against, that the word isn't real

OP posts:
Erythronium · 21/07/2019 22:39

Misandry would have to be equal and opposite to misogyny for it to be a legitimate term, and there is literally no equivalence.

Erythronium · 21/07/2019 22:37

This is the article I think you're thinking about OP:

adonismirror.com/pdf/10152006_leader_misandry_and_misanthropy.pdf

It's right that a man would respond to this nonsense.

BoronationStreet · 21/07/2019 22:37

Fml...an argument for misandry on the feminism boards...Confused

LassOfFyvie · 21/07/2019 22:35

Misandry is a real word.

The most convincing argument for misandry being a real concept is most of what you and a poster who hasn't been seen recently called Twicemummy2 (or similar) post here.

sakura184 · 21/07/2019 22:31

Well I was called a "frothing misandrist" today on mumsnet, and it made me think gosh that word still around then.

I remember it became popular around the same time as the word "kyriarchy". Kyriarchy was a word used by people who didn't think patriarchy was real. Kyriarchy has died a death, I haven't heard it in a long while. But misandrist is clearly making a revival in 2019

OP posts:
AccioWine · 21/07/2019 22:29

What has misandry got to do with the Feminism board? This board is pro women, not anti men. A subtle but important distinction.

Erythronium · 21/07/2019 22:26

Misogyny = rape, domestic violence, FGM, female poverty, gynocide, prostitution, pornography

Misandry = feminism

The scale is weighted in one direction only
