Should feminist petitions stay in Feminist Chat?

Another petition has been shuffled off Feminist Chat to languish in the tumbleweed of the Petitions board.

I can totally understand that petitions in AIBU or _Chat could be annoying, and if they were allowed MN might get overrun with petitions.

But AIBU to think feminism is different as it is by definition an activist part of the site? Feminism isn't just chat, it's about doing stuff also.

Would you like to see feminist petitions stay in FWR? (i.e. on this board) instead of being hidden away on the Petitions board?

Do any regular users of the feminist boards actually object to feminist petitions being here?

I think MN should make an exception to the petitions rule for petitions on the feminist boards. What do you think?

Should feminist petitions stay in Feminist Chat?
BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 19/07/2019 14:26

I always hit 'topics a to z' - right hand side of screen shot. I find the talk topic groupings pretty random

wigglybluelines · 19/07/2019 14:26

I think they can be intrusive and/or divisive

In what way SpartacusAutisticusAHF? Can you think of a petition on the Feminist boards that's been intrusive or divisive?

I can use the petition link (thank you for that) but so I can find it in the future, which talk topic is it under? Apologies if that's obvious.

wigglybluelines · 19/07/2019 14:19

No of course they should not be permitted.

Unless any and every topic has the same privileges

It's got nothing to do with privileges.

It's to do with the fact that the nature of FWR is different to Chat.

If petitions were allowed in Chat, people would spam MN with them.

But most women in the feminist board have at least a passing interest in feminist petitions. I don't see how it'd even be possible to spam this board with them?!

I too did not know that MN had a petitions section. it's here in case anyone is interested

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/petitions_noticeboard

while I was over there once I'd found it,I signed your petition Debbie Smile

MN is a chat site, not a campaigning one

MN is a massive site with loads of different topics. Feminism is all about campaigning and this is specifically the feminist topic. I

Yes MN should not be a political site

Not arguing for the whole of mumsnet to be political. But feminism is political by definition. Disingenuous to pretend it isn't.

Are you two regulars on the feminist board I wonder?

I suspect it was reported Triptych. There are lots of people invested in us not seeing these petitions. However you got my signature out of the nanosecond it was posted. Grin

TriptychDebbie · 19/07/2019 14:11

I tried to post the link here as I feel it's a really important petition but it was deleted in about a nanosecond. It's extremely relevant to the feminist boards imo.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 19/07/2019 14:04

MN not a political site? crikey, someone has seriously skimmed some threads

and yes, I'd be really happy for feminist petitions to be posted here

if they're not feminist people will ignore them and they'll drop down the board I guess

ErrolTheDragon · 19/07/2019 13:51

Yes MN should not be a political site.

Says who? It is, and has been for a long time.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/07/2019 13:50
  • No of course they should not be permitted.

They should, the exceptions being the general topics such as chat and AIBU.

There are all sorts of petitions languishing on the petitions board, some of which deserve the wider notice which they'd get from being under a relevant topic.

I agree that Feminist chat is clearly not just about the theory but about the practice. As such I'd appreciate petitions / crowdfunders etc being allowed on the board. Do hope you can reconsider in this specific case MN?

Ringdonna · 19/07/2019 13:29

Yes MN should not be a political site.

VikingVolva · 19/07/2019 13:27

MN is a chat site, not a campaigning one - as a poster put it 'Starbucks, not Central Hall'

I had no idea there was a petition board. Wonder how many I've missed.

I don't understand why feminist petitions wouldn't appear on FWR.

OdeToDiazepam · 19/07/2019 13:18

I'd like to be able to access petitions here

OvaHere · 19/07/2019 13:01

Yes. It's ridiculous that feminist petitions can't be in the most suitable place - which is here.

I understand the no crowdfunding links rule and also why AIBU/Chat might not want to be cluttered with them but here we all have a vested interest and very much do want them.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/07/2019 12:55

I know there was a good reason for the petitions board - to avoid spamming - but moving everything blindly is crap for genuine petition threads. It seems like the solution would be that if a petition is linked to once, on a relevant board, it should remain there, maybe being copied to the petitions board.

We get instances where multiple threads for the same petition get created and moved in succession so it makes it harder to even keep one in Active convos.

wigglybluelines · 19/07/2019 12:54

I'd prefer them to be on fwr.

Yes, me too. They should be here. Moving them to petitions does nothing except hide them.

No

How about it @MNHQ? Could you rethink the petitions policy please?

Jellylegsni · 19/07/2019 12:32

Relevant petitions of course.
