Should feminist petitions stay in Feminist Chat?

Another petition has been shuffled off Feminist Chat to languish in the tumbleweed of the Petitions board.

I can totally understand that petitions in AIBU or _Chat could be annoying, and if they were allowed MN might get overrun with petitions.

But AIBU to think feminism is different as it is by definition an activist part of the site? Feminism isn't just chat, it's about doing stuff also.

Would you like to see feminist petitions stay in FWR? (i.e. on this board) instead of being hidden away on the Petitions board?

Do any regular users of the feminist boards actually object to feminist petitions being here?

I think MN should make an exception to the petitions rule for petitions on the feminist boards. What do you think?

The petition board is really hard to find. I went looking for it from Talk Topics couldn't find it. Had to go to alphabetical and then it's called something different.

On display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet, stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying "Beware of the Leopard".

StopThePlanet · 19/07/2019 15:21

I had no idea there was a petition board. Wonder how many I've missed.

I don't understand why feminist petitions wouldn't appear on FWR.

^This.

Milk

You said

Fair enough, but there are so many threads in FWR complaining about how MNHQ choose to run their site (including the stringent posting rules) that it comes across that FWR regulars aren't really happy.

Just genuinely (and frequently) puzzled why there are so many complaints about how MNHQ run their site

And you're kinda almost right ish

We all bloody complain - but that's pretty much the SOP for most sites. I know MNHQ has had huge kudos from us for allowing this platform. Massive, huge, kudos, in fact.

Don't mistake our grumbling for anything actually serious.

Also, yeah, I'd rather you didn't jettison FWR. You might need us someday GrinBrewWine

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 19/07/2019 14:58

Any anyway, if we were the type of people who just blindly accepted things that didn't work for us as "just the way things are" - we'd hardly be feminists would we?!

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

That is a very good point!

Advertisers are their customer base though, not the posters on the talk boards. Smart businesses do what brings in the most revenue.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 19/07/2019 14:55

This is our community, we care about it and want it to carry on improving

very much this

the site would have had to change its name to 'Justine's internal monologue' if no-one else had ever joined in. the posters, in conjunction with the moderators, make the community

Who's complaining? We're suggesting improvements.

This is our community, we care about it and want it to carry on improving.

MN is a business and can choose to pay heed or ignore us. But smart businesses (which MN is most of the time) tend to at least consider listening to their customer base, especially when they're so engaged.

If FWR was given an exemption, then other areas could ask for one also, if they did really want one.

I'd make it the rule rather than the exception, for non-general topics.
I'd hope it would be possible for MN tech to detect the difference between spamming versus a single thread.

wigglybluelines · 19/07/2019 14:49

I bet I'm not the only one who didn't know there's a separate board for petitions.

Hardly anyone does, AFAIK. And even most people who do, forget to check it.

It's a place of tumbleweed. The only posts with replies are those that started in a popular area of the site, before being moved there.

Are you being deliberately obtuse / spoiling for a fight?

Neither. Just genuinely (and frequently) puzzled why there are so many complaints about how MNHQ run their site.

GirlDownUnder · 19/07/2019 14:47

Ha! Bernard - it's late here, someone bought me a stunning bottle or red, and I'm pleased to see I'm not the only Confusedat some of these posts.

I think I should log off tho, before I start thinking too highly of myself. Wine

ErrolTheDragon · 19/07/2019 14:47

if they're not feminist people will ignore them and they'll drop down the board I guess

Or they could be reported, if they don't belong.

Does anyone know what MNHQ's reasoning is for moving the petitions? I mean, we can guess. But did they ever tell us?

Yes, it's to deter spamming, which has been an issue in the past. It's nothing specific to FWR.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 19/07/2019 14:46

And we already have v stringent rules around posting, so if it's ok with you, I'd rather not be cast adrift.

OvaHere · 19/07/2019 14:46

I suppose as a workaround in the meantime we post to the petitions board and then link to the thread or is that not allowed either?

wigglybluelines · 19/07/2019 14:45

There is an argument that petitions should be in the relevant sections. But I can understand why MN are reluctant, because of the spam.

If FWR was given an exemption, then other areas could ask for one also, if they did really want one.

wigglybluelines · 19/07/2019 14:43

Why is MN FWR different?

Because feminism is inherently political and it's all about being involved with activism.

Perhaps the "Litter Tray" and "Style & Beauty" would also like relevant petitions?

Well if they would, then they're free to ask MN to make an exception for them too. But, why would they? Neither keeping animals nor an interest in fashion is inherently political nor to do with political activism.

I'm not sure what's so hard to understand about that.

Perhaps the "Litter Tray" and "Style & Beauty" would also like relevant petitions?

well yes, that's almost exactly what someone else said upthread, so your interpretation of FWR thinking they're 'better' has left me rather Confused I'm afraid. can you elaborate?

GirlDownUnder · 19/07/2019 14:41

eh? totally did not get that

And I'm not better than anyone else ffs Hmm as if.

It's just I'm kinda focused on certain topics, and I'll admit I came for Relationships, but I'm pretty much all FWR now, some News, a little AIBU, and like a fair few other FWRs up thread didn't even know there was a seperate petitions board.

If the petition is relevant, then I'd like to know. Please. Thanks.

As for Is it time for FWR to have its own spin off site? umm we're not contagious! And we already have v stringent rules around posting, so if it's ok with you, I'd rather not be cast adrift.

wigglybluelines · 19/07/2019 14:40

which talk topic is it under? Apologies if that's obvious

Not at all obvious!

I found it under Classified.

Who on earth would go looking there on the off chance there might be something relevant to feminism there?!

OP posts:
MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 19/07/2019 14:39

Not that much of a leap!

Petitions go on the Petitions board. Why is MN FWR different? Perhaps the "Litter Tray" and "Style & Beauty" would also like relevant petitions?

Who decides what is and isn't relevant?

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 19/07/2019 14:34

This does smack of FWR regulars considering themselves to be better than other MNers and therefore should have different rules applied to them

eh? totally did not get that

I believe the argument went. where a board is dedicated to a special interest, it would make sense for threads about petitions to do with that special interest to stay on that board

wigglybluelines · 19/07/2019 14:34

Is it time for FWR to have its own spin off site? This does smack of FWR regulars considering themselves to be better than other MNers and therefore should have different rules applied to them.

WTF? That's a bit of a fucking leap isn't it?! SMH.

Different chat boards on MN have different subjects and cultures. Fuck all to do with superiority. Everything to do with observing facts.

The Litter Tray, Chat and Style and Beauty (to pick three boards at random) aren't political.

Feminism is.

That's a difference. Where to you imagine the superiority to be? I have no need for politics when I'm discussing my cat catching ringworm - do you?

OP posts:
MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 19/07/2019 14:28

It's to do with the fact that the nature of FWR is different to Chat.

@MNHQ are you able to shed any light? Why do you remove petitions from FWR? Thanks.
