Well, the professor of sexual and reproductive health upthread is now retweeting Helen I/mimmymum as a reliable source on the right wing funding of GC feminists.

I could weep for what this means for the state of EBM in the UK. In the thread she says she's bookmarked it for later use, having presumably lost no time at all checking out the source of her information.

I don't normally use incorrect pronouns for someone's sex, but it's sometimes too difficult to write something intelligible without using pronouns.

OldCrone · 21/12/2019 21:15

No, a short man with a 15.5 collar won't have sleeves that are so long he has to roll them up. His arms will be in proportion according to the shirt size. There are some short fat men and slim tall men who don't fit those proportions, so shirts can be bought with a slightly longer or slightly shorter sleeve. Most shirts are a standard length. Suits/jackets as you know come in three lengths.

I have a short man sitting next to me (I'm married to him). He has a 15" collar size, but shirt sleeves are always far too long for him. He's not fat but he just said "I do have a thick neck" Grin

The sleeves are too long for the same reason as trousers are always too long for him.

I don't know how tall Stephen Whittle is, but if he's about 5' or not much over, the sleeves are too long because he's short, not because he was born female.

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 21/12/2019 19:44

Whittle is, as ever, talking out of their arse.

HorseWithNoBlueHair · 21/12/2019 19:27

I haven't had any funding.

FlyingOink · 21/12/2019 19:26

I've written and deleted this post three times now.
It's annoying how Whittle can accuse us of X,Y and Z and I have to write and delete and rewrite and delete.

This is too much of a generalisation. Some men are short. They are still men, and it's difficult for them to get clothes to fit because the clothes are made for people of average height. Tall women and very short women have the same problem, as do very tall men.

Stephen Whittle has a longer torso and shorter arms for a reason. (To be honest Whittle should buy tailored shirts, but that's not my point. Whittle has changed the law in an underhand way, and appears quite misogynistic, so in this case trans status is relevant.)
There are six foot tall women, and there are five foot tall men. Their physiology and their proportions identify them as women or men.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers. I’m sorry your brother is being failed bu the mental health system. It’s infuriating to have sexual offences linked to mental health. I’d bet it’s far more likely that people with mental health difficulties hurt themselves.

Fraggling · 21/12/2019 14:06

More to the point one would hope, and used to know, that girl guides couldn't impregnate each other...

OldCrone · 21/12/2019 13:53

In the picture, you can see Whittle is short. And quite slightly built. And has sleeves rolled up. I wear men's shirts myself (and I have long arms!) but without buying the tailored shorter sleeve type, the standard length sleeves are always too long. Why? Female physiology.

ChattyLion · 21/12/2019 13:52

Good grief, sexist jokes about men being allowed into the kitchen. Hmm
Sure, because none of this is based on old woman-hating stereotypes at all.

Thank you for the tweets Sarah Stuart.

Beamur · 21/12/2019 13:32

Not trying to derail, but as a Guide Leader I have found some of the information in that thread. I've made comments to the Guide HQ (and received the reply..) but one thing I have been able to do is make it clear to parents that Leaders on our trips will not be carrying contraception. Our girls are underage and this is not what we are about or will facilitate.

Tocopherol · 21/12/2019 13:26

It is ableist to suggest being mentally ill makes you more likely to assault someone, unless it is a male sexually assaulting a female? Right, gotcha. I can't keep up with the instructions for being kind anymore.

FlyingOink · 21/12/2019 13:07

that picture shows quite clearly that you can't change your biology
Yeah. And I think it's cruel to pretend otherwise. A lot of trans people have been lied to.

TheShoesa · 21/12/2019 12:09

I showed that picture to DS FlyingOink having first showed him a head shot only of Stephen Whittle. I asked him who he thought had been born female and who male. He got it right.

I can't imagine having any sort of dysmorphic condition, but that picture shows quite clearly that you can't change your biology, regardless of what Mr Tayler thinks

FlyingOink · 21/12/2019 12:00

I am funded entirely by the money I earn by using my brain and my skills.
So am I but I'd still like some extra moolah. It's too cold for tent camping in winter.

Binterested · 21/12/2019 11:59

I am funded entirely by the money I earn by using my brain and my skills. Does Stephen not know that women can do that ?

FlyingOink · 21/12/2019 11:50

Also, I would happily take money from evangelicals, they couldn't use it on gay conversion therapy then. I'd spend it on a campervan probably.
If any evangelicals are reading and want to send me a few grand, PM me for my PayPal details. Cheers.

FlyingOink · 21/12/2019 11:48

Stephen Whittle is the perfect example of "but transmen pass".
In the picture, you can see Whittle is short. And quite slightly built. And has sleeves rolled up. I wear men's shirts myself (and I have long arms!) but without buying the tailored shorter sleeve type, the standard length sleeves are always too long. Why? Female physiology.
Jenner has long hair, wears a dress and makeup but does not pass because of height and build. Whittle has a beard and a paunch and a blokey stance but also does not pass because of build.
I've seen Whittle referred to in news reports on this subject with no reference made to the fact Whittle is trans and was born female.
I'm not interested in outing people for the sake of it but in this case it is very relevant, as one could argue (and has, on this thread), that internalised misogyny drives this individual's beliefs.

Let's go over it again.

The TRAs are appropriating the actual experiences of those who fought against Section 28.

They are then screaming "TERF" and "GAMMON" in the ears of those who actually fought for gay rights when most of them weren't even born.

It is they who are banging on windows, intimidating, banning and behaving like fascists.

We are their grandmothers, their mothers, their aunts, their sisters.

Which group is behaving like a pack of 1930s Nazi thugs? Who s behind that?

ArranUpsideDown · 21/12/2019 06:23

Excellent list of people who are sponsored by right-wing evangelical money:

So, just to double check, all these people are hateful bigots, funded by far right Christian fundamentalists?

JK Rowling, David Baddiel, Hadley Freeman, Julie Bindel, Janice Turner, Graham Linehan, Helen Steel, Helen Joyce, Helen Lewis, Robert Webb, Sarah Ditum, Sonia Poulton...ane Harris, Martina Navratilova, Sharron Davies, Oliver Burkeman, Rachel Rooney, Philip Hensher, James Dreyfus, Richard Curtis, Karen Ingala Smith, Dr Kathleen Stock, Dr Jane Clare Jones, Dr Jessica Taylor, Dr Louise Moody, Dr Emma Hilton, Sarah Philimore QC, Ruth Serwotka.. Plus a note from the LGB Alliance on how they're funded (hint, not from rightwing evangelical money):

Whittle comes across as the embarrassing pub bore.

I agreed with this bit though

Then Clarke spoke about the Gender Recognition Act of 2004, and how it is currently not fit for practice now

Time to scrap it.

JanesKettle · 21/12/2019 02:11

Whittle thinks sturdy pj's solve sexual assault and teen pregnancy, so I don't think what he says merits all that much. Classic case of internalised hyper-misogyny, that one.

JanesKettle · 21/12/2019 02:10

I wish someone was funding me!

(Not really, wouldn't take evangelical money)

ArranUpsideDown · 21/12/2019 01:34

I saw a frankly odd dust-up about alleged funding of GC feminists by rightwing (evangelical?) groups from a surprising source (Prof. Cicely Marston who is a Professor of Public Health at LSHTM) - both @lecanardnoir123 @LadyPrincesexual rebuffed the assertion.

To be fair, in response to a request for evidence, CM replied that she would post sources when she found them and has since deleted some posts (I think - it's looking like swiss cheese).

twitter.com/janeclarejones/status/1208169645603278853

However, Cicely Marston's now posted something from Pink News as her source. I was expecting it to be a health economics audit or some sensible report (even if I disagreed with it) but Pink News? CM is a self-declared feminist whose profession is grounded in evidence-based medicine. What is happening to the evidence-based community in the UK? It's beyond depressing.
