Maybe I'm reading McKinnon's tweets wrong but it sounds like it. McKinnon is arguing that not publishing in academic journals was held against McKinnon, and that this is unjust because McKinnon publishes on Twitter, amongst others.

OMG I'm dying that they think they're tweets = "public philosophy". They've basically been told to get off Twitter and do some work, right? And now they're trying to bullshit that them being on Twitter is some academic public service? This twat is such a fucking joke.

Also "popular =/= not scholarship". Don't fret McKinnon, your "work" isn't popular either.

They all seem to be writing non-academic books- Sally Hines, Alison Phipps and now McKinnon. I guess when your argument has no rigour, academic publishing might not be the best plan.

I think a lot of academics like to publish pop stuff if they can, it has a chance of making money.

Curious interpretation of academia from Dr McKinnon there.
Publishing in the relevant journals is all that really matters.
In the UK everything is about the REF submission. I assume there is a similar scheme in the US.
Posting shit on twitter (particularly whisky bragging about the size of her block list) is not quite the same.

In the UK an early career academic like Mack would be expected to be able to submit, as part of their department's research standing assessment, around four pieces of published, peer-reviewed pieces of work that have 'impact' - ie be of national and preferably international significance.

These might be journal articles or books (monographs).

Personally I think the whole system is crap anyway - it favours the old boy network and makes books and journals unaffordable for students - but Mack doesn't even seem to be aiming for Open Access websites.

You can read the links if you open in an incognito tab or whatever is appropriate for your browser.

I'm not surprised mckinnon has been 'wrestling for months', it can't be easy to stretch 'I'm the most oppressed person EVER and you're all TERFS!!' into book length

FormerMediocreMale · 04/07/2019 23:21

Who's publishing these books or are they self publishing?

Certainly none of its up to academic peer review, not even up to Twitter review - any dissenting/potentially dissenting opinions are blocked.

GCAcademic · 04/07/2019 23:20

But would someone working in that environment be made aware of things like how often they’re supposed to publish papers etc, what kind of publications are acceptable and so on?
(E.g. would the merits of getting a peer-reviewed publication in a journal vs the merits of reams of public posts on Twitter be discussed early on in an academic’s career?)

There is simply no way an academic, even at the earliest stage in their career, wouldn’t know this.

MangoesAreMyFavourite · 04/07/2019 23:18

The retweet part got cropped, this may be better.

Such a wonderful role model for women... philosopher and athlete...

I’m unfamiliar with how things work in academia.

Thank you for the screenshots.

McKinnon obviously blocked me for all the tweets I write, oh wait, I've never actually done one.

I can't imagine a more unbearable colleague than McKinnon. Just so full of themselves.

MangoesAreMyFavourite · 04/07/2019 23:11

Just saw this philosophical retweet too... may help with the tenure!!

Philosophical acumen is totally useless if we're only talking to each other. I mean, nothing wrong with a good circle jerk now and then, but let's be more socially productive most of the time, okay?

This did make me chuckle considering the number of people MK has blocked. I'll chuckle even more if they have been sacked but agree with pp not enough rage.

I'm very regularly asked/invited to publish in journals. I basically don't submit work to anonymous peer review, because 'why bother?' I have more than enough opportunities without that hassle

Translation: my work is a load of shit and I can’t get published in any academically rigorous journal

AutumnCrow · 04/07/2019 23:07

Crack on, love

GCAcademic · 04/07/2019 23:05

I am more and more convinced that this individual is a troll. It’s so pathetic and embarrassing that a university has been taken in by them.

Threesoups · 04/07/2019 23:05

Oh bollocks. McKinnon is writing a book now though. Not an academic book, but a paperback accessible to all (because McKinnon cares about everyone) about ensuring fairness for transwomen and intersex women in women's sports.

So not sacked then.

Pota2 · 04/07/2019 23:04

McKinnon does have tenure. This is just a load of ‘poor me’ crap about how they’re so discriminated against and so much better than all their colleagues and their university doesn’t deserve them bla bla bla bla

Popchyk · 04/07/2019 23:04

I always liked Rod Liddle's quote about McKinnon.

"Rachel McKinnon also identifies as a 'doctor', having completed a PhD in Specious Twattery at some dimbo college in Canada".

NotTerfNorCis · 04/07/2019 23:01

Hm. McKinnon says:

No joke, in my department's tenure vote letter in my tenure case, they actually worried about my "commitment to scholarship," as if the public philosophy I publish ISN'T SCHOLARSHIP TOO. What a narrow view of 'scholarship' they hold.

That sounds like something that happened while McKinnnon was being considered for tenureship. I think if McKinnon had been sacked (is that even possible, with tenure?) we'd be hearing a lot more rage.
