Has McKinnon been sacked?

Maybe I'm reading McKinnon's tweets wrong but it sounds like it. McKinnon is arguing that not publishing in academic journals was held against McKinnon, and that this is unjust because McKinnon publishes on Twitter, amongst others.

I wonder if the write up of RM's tenure consideration has just been released? So the world can see that not everyone there thought RM wonderful and should get it automatically. Hope thet makes sense!

It seems McK's university adopts a post-tenure review system:

Post-Tenure Review

  1. Post-Tenure Review Schedule
Each tenured faculty member must undergo post-tenure review at least once every sixth year, except that a tenured Associate Professor or Librarian III may elect to undergo review for promotion to Professor or Librarian IV, respectively, instead, with the understanding that the posttenure review clock is reset by the promotion review. Faculty members holding the rank of Professor or Librarian IV are eligible to seek a superior post-tenure review rating in their sixth year in rank at the College or any subsequent year subject to two conditions: (1) A faculty member may not receive a superior post-tenure review rating more often than every sixth year, and (2) A faculty member who makes an unsuccessful application for a superior rating may seek a superior again the next year but may not apply for a superior rating more than two years in a row. Additionally, a faculty member seeking a satisfactory rating (who has not subsequently been promoted to Professor) is eligible to pursue a superior rating the following year and the subsequent year should that faculty member’s initial application for a superior rating be unsuccessful. (Rev. Aug. 2017; Aug. 2018)
  1. Rating of Candidates
a. Ratings of a candidate will take one of three forms: (1) Superior Rating The superior rating is awarded to candidates who continue to perform at the level expected for the promotion to the rank of Professor, or Librarian IV, in accordance with the standards of the Faculty/Administration Manual. (2) Unsatisfactory Rating Candidate has exhibited evidence of habitual neglect of duty, which means consistently and regularly failing to fulfill the terms and conditions of appointment, as laid out in the Faculty/Administration Manual's "Termination of Tenured Faculty Members 'for Cause' and Termination Procedure." (3) Satisfactory Rating All other candidates.

I wonder if the words 'unsatisfactory rating' are begining to be muttered.

From my Twitter days if I remember correctly, they are yes.

Yep

Who knew that tweeting such gems as the wish that disagreeable women would die in grease fires is considered academic rigour?

McK really is all in on McKs specialist topic of “Why You Don’t Need To Know What You’re Talking About” (the subtitle of McK’s thesis). Full commitment.

Must be absolute hell to work with.

EweSurname · 05/07/2019 07:28

One cannot make a career out of twitting

And yet there appears to be an abundance of professional twits.

TemporaryPermanent · 05/07/2019 07:10

K Montgomerie was being sarcastic (though I did have to read it twice to be sure) and making a good feminist point. It's possible the original tweet was sarcastic too. Neither is the best satirist tbh

2BthatUnnoticed · 05/07/2019 06:51

FWIW I thought that tweet RM retweeted was sarcastic / tongue in cheek and not ill-intended - and I’m not a fan of that tweeter at all (who is constantly transplaining womanhood to women).

Pretty sure that in the US, tenure means a job for life, unless you actually commit murder or something else totally egregious. Yes I do pity departmental colleagues!

Awning10 · 05/07/2019 06:31

From twitter

^...uh...woah. I'm about to make more money as a sponsored athlete than I do as a professor...

No commercials yet...just...wear their name and stuff.^

Nappyvalley15 · 05/07/2019 06:27

Probably just had their appraisal and been told to do their job.

GCAcademic · 05/07/2019 06:15

Can you imagine working in the same department as McKinnon? It must be horrific.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 05/07/2019 05:36

MacKinnon's employers are really tolerant. Most would be really angry about being questioned in such a public manner. Maybe they identify as terrified?

GirlDownUnder · 05/07/2019 03:39

Interesting biopic. Isn't it just!

Although it already looks like that wiki entry has been updated so no longer mis-genders Bike

Has McKinnon been sacked?
TurboTeddy · 05/07/2019 02:55

Also "popular =/= not scholarship". Don't fret McKinnon, your "work" isn't popular either.

I know, 25 likes under that one, quite an audience their philosophy is reaching.

Rachel McKinnon: broadening the bandwidth of what it means to be an academic!

AutumnCrow · 05/07/2019 00:15

I mean don't get me wrong, I think academics should definitely publish free blogs, open tweets and sm posts, and free or very cheap online books for students and general readers to circumvent the rip-off publishing industry - for the sake of students.

But flouncing when asked to think and write at the same time - as per tenure rules - just seems odd.

ZebrasAreBras · 05/07/2019 00:05

GCAcademic - ha Grin

FormerMediocreMale · 05/07/2019 00:03

That retweet of Mckinnon's is so creepy, presume katy montgomerie is the same sex as McKinnon as that tweet sounds so blokeish

From my Twitter days if I remember correctly, they are yes.

But it’s bullshit that self-identifies as scholarship. Don’t be so bigoted!

GCAcademic · 04/07/2019 23:57

Tweeting & writing bullshit is not academic work, "Rachel" dear.

But it’s bullshit that self-identifies as scholarship. Don’t be so bigoted!

ZebrasAreBras · 04/07/2019 23:56

Doing the "do you know who I am" shit to Martina Navratilova ffs.

I suppose that's philosophy is it?

ZebrasAreBras · 04/07/2019 23:54

McKinnon really embodies everything that is wrong in the world of academia and sport.

Tweeting & writing bullshit is not academic work, "Rachel" dear. Identifying as a woman and taking women's sports places does not make you a woman.

LizzieSiddal · 04/07/2019 23:52

They always sound so aggressive. It comes through in almost every tweet.

Threesoups · 04/07/2019 23:43

I'm sure it would be very popular indeed if only more people could see it. Alas, McKinnon is doomed on both fronts here. Academic paywalls thwart access to McKinnon's non Twitter work, and the fact that McKinnon has blocked half of the known world stymies a wider audience for McKinnon's Twitter work.
