Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Sex not gender. (Again.)

Ok so we just had a list of items to be covered in our primary stage for phase sex Ed. Also a list of words to be used. So the topic is presented in bullet point form to parents and all perfectly acceptable age appropriate I have no issue.
They will not be discussing traditional or non traditional notions of gender or anything gender related because there is no bullet point for gender anything in the topics. But the word appears as a word to be used. Sex also appears.
So, all I can imagine is that sex and gender will be used interchangeably. Ive already emailed my older child’s teacher to ask her not to continue to conflate the two so as not to confuse the kids. Same sex couples being referred to as same gender couples. Got a garbled response about them being qualified professionals etc- even though that have been mixing the two up.
Would you email (again) and ask why the word features on the list if it’s not to be discussed? My kids know the difference but I don’t want this just casually pushed into classroom speech.

Dd whispered to me that she and her friend secretly looked up the word sex at school today. I advised her that loads of people have done this ever since they put dictionaries in schools and it is good to know the real meaning of words.

My DS thinks he would get into trouble saying the word “sex”, on the basis that it is a “rude word”... (primary school still). Sadly I could actually see this happening. I’ve told him it is the proper scientific word for male or female, that gender can have different meanings so it is less precise than sex, and if anyone tries to pull him up on saying sex - or penis, or any other such perfectly normal term - they can see me.

MymbleClement · 27/06/2019 00:08

Registration forms for my DS new school had a bit in the personal details section for gender of DH and me. So I crossed them out and wrote sex. I don't have a gender.

response from publisher quite positive, touch wood.

We say “Under his arse” on this house.

I think we are back to needing the Golden Pom Bear badge.

GreyHairDontCare3 · 25/06/2019 23:25

We could whisper
"Under his skirt"
A la Handmaidens

I think it must have come from The Goodies "Gender Education" - a lesson about sex without mentioning sex, if anyone remembers that?

"And children, can you tell the difference between a boy and a girl? Yes, that's right, boys are good at football!"

I just had the annual data check form - it says gender. It has probably said gender for years, I just have not noticed.

DS has been taught gender means sex. He says gender when he means male/female.

How does one even explain what gender is these days? It can be used to mean at least five things (not saying it does or should mean these things but used to mean)

  • gender as synonymous with sex
  • gender to mean sex role norms (what I would have thought being a feminist)
  • gender identity meaning how some people describe their internal feeling of whether they should present in a (societally determined) masculine or feminine manner
  • legal gender (when you have a different gender identity than your biological sex)
  • whether you decline nouns as male, female or neutral in some languages

Have I missed anything?

Chickenish · 25/06/2019 21:58

I’ve written to an educational publisher to correct them about their use of gender where sex should be used. I hope to hear by the end of the week.

Something subtle? Like an AHF t-shirt?

Pota2 · 25/06/2019 17:05

To be fair, until 3 years ago I thought sex was the same thing as gender and used the terms interchangeably. I was taught in school that it was more polite to say gender instead of sex. If they’re not engaged in the debate, they wouldn’t necessarily know.

I like the sound of highs suggestion.

Please can we have a MN/GC "indicator "?! Grin

Debenhamshandtowel · 25/06/2019 16:38

I’ll wear a carnation next time I do the school run, or I’ll carry a rolled up copy of the Times under my left arm.

highhighmountain · 25/06/2019 16:36

Just send an email confirming the outcome of your conversation. 'Further to our conversation today I am emailing to confirm that ....' sort of thing. Copy in the appropriate people. If it's there in writing it there is more comeback.

We need a GC handshake.

At Primary school, we had a lesson about how safe we all were because the classroom was lined with Asbestos.

Evenquieterlife33 · 25/06/2019 15:46

Ooh Debenhams I wonder if we are at the same school?

OP posts:
Debenhamshandtowel · 25/06/2019 15:33

Please do it. I’ve had a similar list just now too. I’ll be emailing.

Is there a secret GC handshake? Like the MN scarf?

Goosefoot · 25/06/2019 15:28

certainly not improve things.
