Fucking hell. I belong to a child-free group on Fb. Fairly good craic even though I don't agree with some stuff on there. Majority in the group probably women in their early 20's. Someone asked yesterday what people thought about Trans woman competing in women's sports and ohhhh my god. The number of women sabotaging themselves with comments such as the one in my title. Wtf is going on? :( I know you'll find uber-wokes in all corners of the internet but God it makes me sad. How are some women so utterly gullible? Apologies - nothing new to add to the debate, I'm much more a reader than a poster but I feel very deflated right now.

OP posts:

The only possible response to such a comment is that you would love to discuss this but the word "cis" is meaningless to you and so you're unable to engage with the op. 😏

Social media is equal opportunities for morons

They watch too many women taking down men in hand-to-hand combat or running side-by-side with them away from bad guys in films and television and if they've never had to attempt that, they have no sense how unlikely that all is.

What's funny is, to meet Hollywood standards, most of the women on film engaging in these fights are rail thin, not a biceps or a quadriceps to be seen.

BluebonicPlague · 20/06/2019 21:19

I've come across young people so convinced of equality in all things between men and women that it hasn't dawned on them that sex differences confer any advantage on males, let alone that strength difference might have had some influence on women's inferior status over the centuries. If they've noticed it they've put it down to acculturation. (And we're still partly reaping the harvest from second wavers who refused to acknowledge there were weaknesses involved with periods or recovering from childbirth.) So it's possible that some young people really believe that women could run as fast as men, throw as far, jump as high etc etc, if only they tried harder.

I also thought equality was a done deal but it now feels like we stalled a few years ago. Role back on reproductive rights in the states and total disregard for women's safe spaces make me question if we are in fact in reverse and gathering speed.

I'd like to hope DuMondeB is right about the collective madness passing but some days I lose faith that it will.

Includes some eye-opening comparisons between boys' and girls' performances at various running distances.

Perhaps you could just point out that a lot of men would take their comment so at face value and not recognise the humour?

CrazyToast · 20/06/2019 18:49

I also used to think I was equal to all and feminism was over until I got older and gained weight and suddenly realised what my worth was in society.

DuMondeB · 20/06/2019 18:46

It’s a collective madness. It will pass.

I hope so, anyway!

To be fair, I thought I was equal to all and feminism was over until I was pregnant with my first child. Then I suddenly smashed up against the invisible walls of the patriarchy, like a sparrow flying into a closed patio door.
