Heads up if you haven't seen it:

He has started a thread on twitter about it.

It interesting to see the priority of those posting and who is saying what.

If you're going to defend him at least refer to the full quote

Just did Smile
not defending really, just saying how I see it. With opinions like people tend to do

OvaHere · 19/06/2019 09:18

That was to OvaHere by the way as cross posted with a few other posts

Cassian has already answered for me. His 'support' was flippant lip service before he reverted to his favoured subject of men's rights and most importantly what a really great he is. Hmm.

If you're going to defend him at least refer to the full quote.

LimeKiwi · 19/06/2019 09:17

oh, Lime. You know full well you've deliberately left out what he said after that. Don't you. You know and understand full well that removing what followed changes the meaning of what he said. Why would you do that, Lime?

You what? I didn't deliberately leave off anything, I was referring to the relevant bit about maternity leave somebody said so quoted that bit.
Yes, he did say that if it came with paternity leave as well though - why shouldn't that be important too though?
I think they both are.
Why not want to campaign for both? Good maternity leave massively important but paternity leave is a good thing too.
I'd have loved it if DH had got a decent paternity leave too, instead of the 2 weeks I think it was that he did get.

Apollo440 · 19/06/2019 09:16

I think asking him to define Woman cuts to the heart of the matter. No TRA supporter wants to say it out loud that they think it is anyone who says they are because it alerts anyone new to the debate the hollow vacuous nature and shear bat shittery of this nonsense.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 19/06/2019 09:12

Thank you cassian

Saved me from checking that ‘fact’

merrymouse · 19/06/2019 09:10

I mean, what was he supposed to say?! I see the very first question is "define woman."

He was supposed to address the issue in a logical, informed, rational way, just as I expect him to address questions on Brexit and the WTO or education in a logical, informed, rational, way.

Philosophically, I believe in the freedom of the individual to be who they want to be - and not to be told who they are by society. doesn't really help me. I require legislation and services that ensure that I can participate equally in society and do not suffer unfair structural and overt discrimination because of my sex. My identity is completely irrelevant - I can't stop being a woman.

As someone who has repeatedly (and I mean REPEATEDLY) been on the end of that question, there is no answer he could have given without the entire conversation being bogged down and taken over with trans issues.

This question was to be expected and he had the option of just stating facts.

"A woman is somebody born with the kind of body that would be expected to produce eggs. The legal definition now also extends to anybody with a GRC recognising their sex as female".

Instead he talks about 'being who you want to be', which is a sanctimonious rubbish.

CassianAndor · 19/06/2019 09:08

(For those who didn't Ed's full answer to that question, here it is:
Totally support it. As long as it comes with official paternity leave and shared parental leave.)

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 19/06/2019 09:05

What a fucking bellend. That's as articulate as I can be.

God, I feel sorry for his wife.

How can you not have the mental capacity to understand that opening women's spaces to self ID also opens the door to any male who wants to prey on women? How can you be in politics and not realise that?

I guess they don't think men ever pose any threat to women - the prison stats, the rape stats etc are lies, our own lived experience are lies, #metoo is a lie, historical injustices are just history etc, etc.

LimeKiwi · 19/06/2019 09:01

What do you think about Stella Creasy's call for women MPs to have official maternity leave?

Totally support it.

This bit? This to me says he totally supports a call for official maternity leave so I'm not sure why it apparently means he doesn't care for women on the basis of this answer Confused
No, it's nothing to do with trans, it was a separate question.
He said he cares for trans women and then when asked about women and maternity leave he said he totally supports it.
So that means too?

Fibbke · 19/06/2019 08:56

OvaHere · 19/06/2019 08:53

I think he laid out his beliefs really well which is that he cares for trans women too

No need for the 'too' he showed not one iota of care for women. This particularly shone through in his answer about maternity leave which had nothing to do with trans. It was blindingly obvious that this is a man who will always elevate male interests above anything else.

Helmetbymidnight · 19/06/2019 08:53

Ah no, its still there, sorry.

Fibbke · 19/06/2019 08:51

Oh that's a shame. I was quite proud of suppporting the lib dems. No more.

Helmetbymidnight · 19/06/2019 08:50

Oof, I've no respect for him after reading that and his twitter thread - (which I think might have disappeared.)

He really does think men are women if they say so. Pathetic.

TufVoyaging · 19/06/2019 08:48

Macareaux, fantastic response

ThePurported · 19/06/2019 08:42

The Conservatives have systematically undermined Women & Equalities (and the EHRC) because they don't like the concept of human rights or state-enforced equality of the sexes for ideological reasons. It is well documented. This is their mess, partly by accident and partly by design. So what if they have had two female leaders?

LimeKiwi · 19/06/2019 08:16

This really isn't going to be a popular opinion, but I think he answered well.
I mean, what was he supposed to say?! I see the very first question is "define woman."
As someone who has repeatedly (and I mean REPEATEDLY) been on the end of that question, there is no answer he could have given without the entire conversation being bogged down and taken over with trans issues as it would have gone on forever and nothing else asked.
I mean, he even got the "try again" trotted out. He's probably a MNer lurker and seen it all already and gone in with a "Right! I'm ready, better have an answer straight away" instead of coming in with a "WTF, argh" attitude Grin
As MN HQ said, it wasn't intended to be a one topic conversation which it would have been otherwise.
I think he laid out his beliefs really well which is that he cares for trans women too. Which is fair enough and I actually admire him for sticking to his beliefs instead of crumbling to some (note, I said some not all) of the hate on here.
Which there is sometimes even if you think there isn't.
I'd don my flame proof pants but meh, I'm used to it by now lol

Throckmorton · 19/06/2019 08:13

I'm certainly not going to vote for a party just based on who's had female leaders. I mean, the SNPs have Sturgeon, and look how's that working out for women's rights in Scotland...

twicemummy1 · 19/06/2019 08:08

@GrumpyCatLives That's very true isn't it. Labor is supposed to be the party of choice for women because of its socialist policies. And yet both our female prime ministers were Tory

NeurotrashWarrior · 19/06/2019 08:01

mumfun - id agree but I know of less GC Lib Dem's than any other party!

Who is GC?

GrumpyCatLives · 19/06/2019 01:04

The Tories have had 2 female leaders, which is much more than Labour or Lib Dems ever will.

I would vote Tory over Labour or Lib Dem.

RedToothBrush · 19/06/2019 00:13

What happens if you are a little girl and you are denied your own identity by the gender fairies:

www.thepostmillennial.com/ontario-family-files-human-rights-complaint-after-six-year-old-girl-upset-by-gender-theory-in-school/amp/?__twitter_impression=true
Ontario family files human rights complaint after six-year-old girl upset by gender theory in school

Stories related to gender identity in childhood usually have for their protagonist a child who is distressed over the disparity between her or his biological reality and their perceived gender. The scenario often presents educators as enlightened, affirming allies of the child, while the parents, behind the times, so to speak, resist affirmation and cause the child further anxiety. In these cases the injustice to the child seems pretty clear cut to many rights-attuned Canadians. The child’s right to express his or her gender identity trumps the parents’ right to oppose it.

Here we have the opposite case. N’s gender identity is—or was—seamless comfort in her biological skin. She had never questioned that comfort. Suddenly she was told to believe that at any moment, what she believes to be real—that she is a girl—may not be true. How very frightening that thought must be to a child who is not old enough to grasp the abstract concept of gender fluidity. Her parents are the allies here, and her educational environment is where she fails to find affirmation. Why could she not be accommodated as well as the questioning child? Why did this situation have to end up at a human rights tribunal?

Ds1 is a member of the lib dems...he will stay in long enough to vote in the next leader
