Councillor wants Mayor to make all toilets gender neutral

Local paper today:

www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/teesside-news/mayor-quizzed-gender-neutral-toilets-16437625

I am planning on writing to the Mayor to be vocal in my objections, but I may need some guidance as well please.

Traditionally toilets have been gender specific, divided into two categories: male and female.

First of all I will make it very clear that they have been divided by SEX.

make a start by designating all council building toilets as gender-neutral.

I guess this is where I need to start quoting the Equality Act? and that it is a legitimate aim to separate by sex. I am also going to quote the (2011) cenus figures about the diversity of the town and the significantly high Muslim population.

I understand, clearly, there will be some concerns from some councillors and members of the public but the risk does not increase once public toilets become gender neutral.

In fact, if anyone has any intention in committing a crime at present, they will do so.

This is about creating a much more safer environment for transgender and non binary people.

The first really is not true is it? and the last is just about getting women to suck it up

I am having lots of thoughts that I will keep to myself.

I do have a lot of respect for Ellie though, I don't necessarily agree with all of her viewpoints but she is always fairly respectful when voicing them.

A little more insight into the man in question

www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/teesside-news/tory-councillor-says-sorry-rotten-16446676

There has been a real drive of Independents in the town, whilst I think some independents are positive and do a good job and are passionate about what they do, there is a significant number whose manifestos are basically to 'please everyone', but in doing that they will please no-one.

So what difference will the type of cubicle make to the girls safety if a man can follow her into the toilets?

Apollo440 · 18/06/2019 18:46

So where is the risk?

Girl goes to the toilet, bloke follows her in. Social convention dictates that this is not normal and people would intervene to point the man to the correct toilet and ensure the girl was not in danger.
Under mixed sex provision the male would be entitled to be there so his presence could not be questioned. Still not get it? This is a massive safety issue.

AnyOldPrion · 18/06/2019 17:12

Juells: I can't understand this either. Why do people choose to make themselves objects of ridicule, then complain that they're not safe? How is it helping them?

Exactly this. They claim it isn’t a choice, but a choice is exactly what it is.

The choice may be pushed by medics, but they too have a choice.

And if the choice IS to transition, then the medics who push it need to take responsibility for any increased problems the patient has navigating through life.

It’s obvious to almost all mentally healthy people that the majority of male people who transition will never pass. That information, and all the difficulties that go with it, needs to be explained in full prior to treatment, and the patient should have access to additional psychological help to deal with the problems that continue afterwards, for life if necessary.

This is not something that should be thrust on society (and women in particular) to deal with.

FlapsMagazine · 18/06/2019 16:28

Jebus, no personal experience of what Teeside is like now, but growing up we weren't far from the area and the reputation for prostitution and drugs preceded it. Have they really cleared it up so effectively that this is now the only pressing issue for the council?

Birdsfoottrefoil · 18/06/2019 16:26

Good news then! The toilets are already gender neutral - females of any gender can use the female toilets, and males of any gender can use the male ones.

Popchyk · 18/06/2019 16:19

No, Curious.

That was another one this week. Still in Scotland though.

www.dunfermlinepress.com/news/17698951.naked-woman-caught-perv-spying-on-her-at-carnegie-leisure-centre/?ref=mr&lp=6

Seems like a lot of pervs in Scotland are getting very emboldened these days. Almost as though a climate of trespassing the boundaries of women and girls has been created by the Scottish government. And a certain element are taking full advantage.

Remember though - it never happens.

CassianAndor · 18/06/2019 16:08

Lelly whenever there is a male cleaner in the women's toilets there is a sign clearly stating this. Why do you think that is?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/06/2019 16:06

Oh! Was he the 'kid' who was so scared of the husband of a woman he peaked at that he begged to be let out the back door?

borderline personality disorder ? Not sure that one flys either!

Popchyk · 18/06/2019 15:55

So where is the risk?

This was in the news today.

7 year old girl sexually assaulted by a man in the women's toilets.

AlwaysComingHome · 18/06/2019 15:47

So where is the risk?

It’s up to you to give a damn good reason for changing the system, not for us to defend it year after fucking year.

theOtherPamAyres · 18/06/2019 15:41

So where is the risk?

That wasn't the question. I want someone to convince me that there is a good reason why grown men and little girls use the same toilets.

It's a massive social and cultural change. You don't introduce social and cultural changes without very good reasons. What are they?

divingworldchampion · 18/06/2019 15:27

This is my town too, will email and write.

LellyM · 18/06/2019 15:23

"Surely there is a very good reason why adult men and little girls should use the same toilets? " - unless I am missing the point, the stalls/cubicles will still be one person use so why does it matter? I am not worried if I come out of the loo and there is a male cleaner standing there and I certainly don't care who is sitting in the cubicle next to me.

So where is the risk?

Local people seem unimpressed.

Comments are amusing.

theOtherPamAyres · 18/06/2019 12:57

Surely there is a very good reason why adult men and little girls should use the same toilets? There must be.

I can think of reasons (and have supporting evidence) as to why its a bad idea, but I haven't heard the arguments (and supporting evidence) for the mixed-sex changing room/toilet yet.

Will a proponent please explain?

Manderleyagain · 18/06/2019 12:31

It would be worth looking in to what happened at Cambridge. I'm sure there will be a thread about it here somewhere.

A councillor resigned over a similar issue. The policy had to be reviewed.

Comingtoatownnearyou · 18/06/2019 10:37

Thank you daughter. I am at work so will do mine later, though will start a draft at lunchtime.

Sadly eme the proposal sounds like he just wants the signs on the existing toilets changed rather than actually making any real changes.

The biggest irony here is that the Transwoman is grappling with the conflicting needs of the binary and non binary trans people.

HELLLLOOO! Woman here.

Female erasure in action.

Juells · 18/06/2019 10:14

KatvonHostileExtremist it's the eyes that get me

shudder

ememem84 · 18/06/2019 09:52

I’d have no issue with this if it was a self contained toilet with sink dryer etc.

Not just a row of stalls shared sinks etc.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 18/06/2019 09:48

I know we are grown up and commenting on people's appearances is wrong... But.... But

THAT MULLET Shock

CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/06/2019 09:31

Why? Why on Erth do they get so much attention?

Who reads that and thinks " Oh yes! We need to dismantle all we have because some fairy dust got sprinkled"

I am a tad annoyed.

Daughterofmabel · 18/06/2019 09:26

Have emailed the mayor

Juells · 18/06/2019 09:23

If transitioning people feel so fucking humiliated all the time, then transitioning is obviously a miserable failure of a treatment that doesn't work when the patients meet the real world.

AnyOldPrion, I can't understand this either. Why do people choose to make themselves objects of ridicule, then complain that they're not safe? How is it helping them?
