No retrial, her plea to manslaughter accepted, and sentenced to time served.

So happy for her and her family, and such a huge step for victims of abuse.

The problem was that Sally was a traumatised automaton In court, replying super softly “I suppose so” to every single thing the prosecution QC put to her. She would have agreed the moon was made of cheese. So when the prosecuting QC put it to her that she had taken the hammer intending to kill, Sally said she supposed so. She had been controlled for so long that she would never have contradicted anyone in authority. This then became a “fact”. Whilst it is nonetheless untrue.

Flowers This breaks my heart.

Thank you for going in to bat Supporting Sally. I'm so happy that Sally finally has justice and also for your whole family.

Find it hard to celebrate something that will just be abused to mitigate violence and murder of partners going forward (both men and women).

Jessica Flowers. Sorry to hear about your difficult childhood.

I am so glad she is free, but so sorry for all her suffering. I nearly strangled my father when I was a child, as he was hitting me... so I have some deep feelings on this and for all the women in Sally’s position Flowers

AIBU to want to put the hammer thing straight? It’s just not true that she took it intending to kill Richard. She took it to break up furniture as they were to start a new life together (said Richard) in Australia once they had disposed of their things. There was already a hammer in the home, as Sally knew full well, but a second was needed so she could help. On the day of the offence, that is indeed what they had been doing all morning - breaking up furniture in the garage so it would fit in the skip.

I am the (female - she had 4 brothers and 2 sons) relative who started the appeal for Sally when I saw the injustice of the first trial. Harriet and Justice For Women are amazingly dedicated and inspirational. We have finally got the right result. Thanks for the kind words above.

nocoolnamesleft · 07/06/2019 22:58

Progress. So glad for her, and her sons.

Gran22 · 07/06/2019 22:57

I can't see why it wouldn't be
None of the content is country specific except for some cultural references which wouldn't be a barrier IMO

Brilliant news!

On the subject of the Freedom Program, does anyone know if the online version is country specific? As in, can it be accessed world wide? I have a friend in America who really really needs it.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 07/06/2019 20:23

Excellent news and huge admiration for her sons and Justice for Women (Harriet Wistrich) for their campaigning and successful legal challenge. Flowers

Littleelffriend · 07/06/2019 20:12

Amazing news

iguanadonna · 07/06/2019 20:08

Yes!!!

veryboredtoday · 07/06/2019 19:50

Such a good result and the statement from her son explains very clearly why this was a good decision. Very dignified.

Jux · 07/06/2019 19:33

Really really pleased. There are still a large number of women in prison for the same offence with the same sort of history. Lots of work still to be done to ensure that Justice is actually served.

greengrower · 07/06/2019 19:11

It's great news. The Freedom Programme did wonders for me

placemats · 07/06/2019 19:02

A fantastic result for Sally and her family. Well done also to her legal team headed by Harriet Wistrich.

I'm raising a glass to your all tonight. xx

MrsBertBibby · 07/06/2019 19:02

Just heard Harriet Wistrich on the radio news. Woman's a bloody hero.
