Seems to have been carried out by well known TRA who has threatened violence before: twitter.com/bindelj/status/1136402563379716096

I don't think it's appropriate for posters to be speculating in detail about a violent perpetrators possible mental illnesses. If true it's sensitive personal data. Citing a violent offenders possible mental state shouldn't be used to shut up women out of fear of what else the offender may go on to do and you're stigmatising those with genuine mental illness by associating them with said violent offender. And on a feminist board if all places it's inappropriate to suggest that by talking about a violent perpetrator we're somehow responsible if their violence escalates Angry

I absolutely think referring to their appearance is relevant barrackers superb article 'pronouns are rophypol' (sp?) tells us what happens to our thought processes when we are silent about the disconnect between what we can see and how they are described.

I am still careful how what I post as I've no wish to be suspended but I'm so fucking fed up with being polite in my head.

I've also realised one reason my husband doesn't notice TW in real life because his, like most men's, eyes skate straight over women they perceive as ugly with no second glance and barely a first glance, so he's largely oblivious to the presence of TW in real life.

That a male person would be perceived as an ugly woman when they wear womanface is very relevant to why we notice them and men don't.

tobeforgotten · 06/06/2019 22:48

"The thing is, men aren't violent because they can't stop themselves - as evidenced by the fact that they're not violent to those who are stronger than them who might hit back.
They're violent because they're allowed."

I'm amazed and slightly ashamed that this has never occurred to me before. off to reflect.

Databreachnamechanger · 06/06/2019 22:40

Ooh, I would be MORE than up for a FWB disco (another long-timer and frequent name changer). I was in my hotel beddy-byes for the evening do at the Manchester FiLiA 2018, and I know I saw a couple of other Mumsnetter FWB frequenters there in the daytime. I've met another few in Newcastle at a GC group there, but definitely no disco so far.

Popchyk · 06/06/2019 22:37

Me too, DuMonde. Sounds brilliant.

"At first I was afraid, I was petrified..." as Julie Bindel tweeted today.

TemporaryPermanent · 06/06/2019 22:37

That Guardian piece is interesting. Towards the end, Bindel is quoted directly as saying her attacker 'does not represent the transsexual community' but earlier she is indirectly quoted as saying they did not represent the transgender community. Do they not think as a writer that Julie Bindel was speaking accurately?

DuMondeB · 06/06/2019 22:30

I’m sad that I missed a Mumsnet feminist disco a half-decade ago.

LangCleg · 06/06/2019 22:30

is this a new er... technique?

Regardless of any posters on this thread, the I'm GC but... business is becoming more and more frequent (and more and more tiring).

LangCleg · 06/06/2019 22:28

JackyHolyoake - great article. Those who can't accurately locate male violence within an actual feminist framework might like to read it and reflect.

MsJeminaPuddleduck · 06/06/2019 22:24

Feminism isn't for hagiographies. Sometimes we're shits. But mostly we're bloody great, and we don't, none of us, leave other women bumping under bus wheels.

Great post Floral - what I think (but you said it better)

MsJeminaPuddleduck · 06/06/2019 22:21

Hehe - the Harry the Owl thread was fab!

Bet it had a material impact in helping him reach his target Wink

ZebrasAreBras · 06/06/2019 22:19

This is the second time that I've witnessed a poster saying "I'm gender critical, I'm one of you - I just think you're wrong here" - is this a new er... technique? The first was the Harry the Owl fundraiser thread.

FloralBunting · 06/06/2019 22:13

Don't expect more from the women you respect here. Expect reality, warts and all. I've not always agreed with the decisions or general tone or statements from every woman here, and I've sometimes winced, even the ones I actually know personally and like enormously.

I like and respect Julie Bindel and I don't always agree with her statements or choice of words. I like and respect Posie Parker and I am the same with her. There's no woman on this earth with whom I have never been a touch disappointed in. And I'm quite sure I've disappointed others and let the side down.

That's reality. Feminism isn't for hagiographies. Sometimes we're shits. But mostly we're bloody great, and we don't, none of us, leave other women bumping under bus wheels. That's my bottom line, anyway.

ZebrasAreBras · 06/06/2019 22:09

Popchyck & Wichbitch - I know, I absolutely agree with you both. It's a shitshow. As I said - no justice.

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 06/06/2019 22:02

Smiling through gritted gums these days Outanabout!

gingerginger2 · 06/06/2019 22:01

Oh and point taken about conflating mental illness with violence. I was erroneously using that term when in fact yes I should of used something more like personality disorder or something. The person is unstable anyway.

gingerginger2 · 06/06/2019 21:58

I am a regular, been on mumsnet for over a decade. Name change every couple of months though as I don’t like having a long searchable posting history for folk to analyse and because I have sisters and sister in laws that I suspect post here too. Usually on AIBU and relationships though.

I do still disagree with you all though. But hey ho, not going to continue fighting about it.

You’re wrong though if you are thinking my aim was to tell wonen to shut up, or be nice, or blame women for make violence or whatever. Just expected more of women I respected than personal insults. And you’re also wrong if you think i’m Just chiding women. I don’t want to go into details as I do not want to out myself, but I am definately not.

Outanabout · 06/06/2019 21:56

WitchBitch I absolutely agree. The fashion a year or so ago on here of finger-wagging at posters with TGLWGH used to make me grind my teeth in irritation. An abuser's charter, to.my mind.

TinDogTavern · 06/06/2019 21:54

That Guardian article is HORRENDOUS. Attack on JB framed as a response to a "transphobic" meeting. They're actually running a "she asked for it" line, essentially. Breathtakingly bad.

AnyOldPrion · 06/06/2019 21:54

the decision of the university to withdraw from the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index

That Guardian article contained this little gem too. Despite its Guardianness, I definitely got a sense that someone or other at the university might have woken up, despite the new gender nonsense department.

And having flounced, perhaps the next incarnation of this group will be a little more balanced?

JackyHolyoake · 06/06/2019 21:53

A must-read: medium.com/@camradfems/political-violence-is-patriarchal-c567659e210e

GCAcademic · 06/06/2019 21:41

The Guardian are MRA-enabling scumbags. My understanding of the situation with the staff Pride committee is that they were told by the University to stop telling students that they were unsafe on campus. Which is absolutely right, it’s reprehensible that staff should be scaring students for political or ideological purposes. But of course it’s being reported by that Men’s Rights Rag that they were censored in a more comprehensive way.

Muststopfaffing · 06/06/2019 21:39

Mental illness rarely causes people to be violent to others, and not in such a coherent, planned manner. People with actual mental health problems are much more likely to hurt themselves than someone else. Narcissistic and antisocial personality disorders are not a mental illness and do not diminish this man’s responsibility for his actions.

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 06/06/2019 21:38

Zebras being the bigger person is wearing thin and it's this, combined with our 'niceness', that has let the violent narcissists get to this point. I personally am sick to fuck of being the 'bigger person', it does us no good whatsoever sometimes.

Popchyk · 06/06/2019 21:37

Julie should do what she wants. I don't blame her for not wanting to get bogged down in a police complaint in Scotland when she's busy with her other stuff.

If Julie goes to the police, she'd be accused of targeting "an already marginalised community".

If Julie doesn't go to the police, then the attack never happened.

Welcome to being a woman in 2019. Always in the wrong, whatever you do.

NotBadConsidering · 06/06/2019 21:37

The Guardian article is a piece of shit. Focusing on the people who resigned because their little tanty to stop women talking about male didn’t work, and mentioning a physical attack on someone who has written for that newspaper as a side note to the “main” story. Why isn’t the headline “Guardian contributor attacked by man person”? You could argue the writer Libby Brooks is trying to write a balanced article, but that would a) fly in the face of their usual approach and b) still wouldn’t excuse which part of the event they think is the most important bit to prioritise.

So they can get fucked.
