The feeling of makeup

Sort of an addition to the other current makeup threads. I wonder if anybody else has experienced this.

When I wore makeup, I didn't like the feel of it. I had liquid eyeliner that stung my eyes, mascara whose fibres used to get in my eyes and make them water, lipstick which sometimes felt horrible on my lips and was unpleasantly perfumed. Foundation was weird when it dried on my skin and powder used to be cakey and not very pleasant either. I already said on one of the other threads that I didn't like the feeling of nail varnish on my nails which is why I never painted them, nothing to do with any feminist analysis at the time.

Andrea Dworkin said that beauty practices were pain but I'd also add that they are uncomfortable. Not bad enough to stop you doing it, but enough to always make you aware that you are wearing makeup and really, that it's not very nice.

I touch my face all the time,I'm a proper fidget, and my eyes too as I have hayfever /dry eyes so need to use eye drops throughout the day.

Good make up doesn't budge an inch!

butteryellow · 06/06/2019 08:55

To me the worst was not being able to touch my face or rub my eyes (I wear contacts, so I do sometimes want to fidget with them just to let them lube themselves a bit.

I had to train myself not to touch myself. The few times I wore lipstick I had to also remind myself not to lick my lips/rub them against each other too much, and to be careful when eating - so I don't wear lipstick at all!

I can't feel light makeup - but if it's heavier mascara, or full on panstick levels of foundation then it's always there. And artifical eyelashes I can't stand - always in my view (mind you, I hate wearing glasses for the same reason).

orangeshoebox · 06/06/2019 08:47

I also have an issue with the plastics use (hairspray, nail varnish, scrub particles, colour, excessive packaging)
and the health aspect (fumes from sprays and nail varnish)

Another one with autism and lots of sensory issues re clothes, shoes etc but make up has never bothered me. I can't feel it

Livpool · 06/06/2019 08:35

I can't feel it at all

LoafofSellotape · 06/06/2019 08:33

Not all of them were good looking but the world didn’t seem over bothered about them painting their faces to hide

Make up for me isn't something I hide behind.

Jozen · 06/06/2019 08:20

I think it's a very individual thing.
Personally for me, I have my favourite products that I wear most days and I can't feel that I'm wearing any. Any deviations feel "different" not unpleasant but different.
I hate the feel of lipstick though, I love the look but nope, hate the feel of it but I can coat my lips in a layer of Vaseline no problem.

Whatisthisfuckery · 06/06/2019 08:10

What’s more I never saw my dad or male friends wear makeup so didn’t understand why I should. Not all of them were good looking but the world didn’t seem over bothered about them painting their faces to hide.

Whatisthisfuckery · 06/06/2019 08:08

My mother and sister used to encourage me to let them paint me up in makeup and nail varnish when I was a young teen. I always hated the feel of it. My eyes would feel heavy and watery and my face felt, well like it had been painted. Nail varnish made my fingers feel heavy and like they couldn’t breathe. I’d get it all off pretty much as soon as it was finished, much to my mother and sister’s frustration. I’ve never used it since and had no desire to either. There’s nowt wrong with my face. If I look fine then I don’t need makeup and if I’m ugly then it’s not gonna help, so I don’t care. I don’t think I’m ugly btw, just kind of average.

orangeshoebox · 06/06/2019 08:03

I'm the same.
tinted moisturiser/bb cream is a good as it gets.
I also hate the feeling of nail polish.
I also hate that you can't just snuggle on the sofa without leaving smears of make up making more laundry/housework.

but I like wearing a 'mask' at work. feels like I can put work behind me when I take it off.

DecomposingComposers · 06/06/2019 08:03

Surely if you don't like the feeling of make up you just don't wear it?

On the odd occasion that I do wear it I don't feel it all. If I did, and didn't like the feeling, I just wouldn't wear it.

Fairylea · 06/06/2019 07:59

I can’t feel make up on my skin at all. I have autism as well and have big issues sensory wise with clothes and bras but make up doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I always wear it. I don’t judge anyone for not wearing it, I think everyone should do whatever they like, but I certainly don’t find it uncomfortable at all!

Biancadelrioisback · 06/06/2019 07:58

I wear makeup every day....because I like how it makes me look. I can't feel a thing. And it's incredibly patronising and offensive to imply that women who do wear makeup are "enduring" the "discomfort" for fashion.

PreseaCombatir · 06/06/2019 07:56

No, I can’t feel make up on my skin.
Which is why I usually forget I have it on in hay fever season, and end up with panda eyes...

Floisme · 06/06/2019 07:48

I've had a skin reaction to certain products - so I don't use them.
Mascara stings - so I never wear it.
But being able to feel make up lying on my skin - no I've never noticed that.
Women often don't notice when their make up smudges so I'm guessing they can't feel it either.

Posters on the other threads said repeatedly that they wear make up because they like it. Women on Style and Beauty sometimes talk about how make up routines feel like an oasis when they're overwhelmed by child care. Of course that could well be a result of conditioning but you could say that about most of the things that most of us like.

Auldspinster · 06/06/2019 07:37

I don't feel make up, I tend to wear eyeliner and mascara and concealer if I have a rosecea flare up but I'm equally happy to go out bare faced.

I use waterproof mascara and liner so it doesn't run.

Xiaoxiong · 06/06/2019 07:31

I can feel both suncream and makeup, especially lipstick, though I don't mind the feeling. I do get the same feeling from nail varnish as many on here though - heavy and suffocating like my fingertips are wrapped in sellotape or covered in puffy stickers. I still get clear polish sometimes to discourage me biting them. I positively love nail varnish on my toes though, I think when I wear sandals it makes my toes feel (irrationally) protected and the process of a pedicure really helps my feet which otherwise get very dry and gnarly. I love having my hair done as well, especially if I get a head massage during the hair washing - bliss!

Fucket · 06/06/2019 06:34

I can feel make-up, moisturisers, sun cream etc. I have Very strong sense of touch I think, like feeling mosquitoes landing on me before they bite, or a single strand of hair that might fall onto my arm. I don’t wear jewellery anymore because it irritates my mind!

Absolutely know the feeling of wanting to claw make-up off my face.

I also detest massages and really only let people I love hug/kiss me. Some people can be really heavy handed, I know some people like that but not when you’ve got very sensitive and intune skin.

madcatladyforever · 06/06/2019 06:34

Everyone should wear makeup or not as they choose. It isn't obligatory. I'm asexual and don't have relationships neither do I wish to attract a partner but I enjoy wearing makeup and looking good for my own pleasure. It's part of getting dressed. It seems madness to wear it if it isn't comfortable.

dancingcamper · 06/06/2019 06:30

This is really interesting. I can't stand the way nail. varnish feels either - the same as the person saying it feels heavy and as though your nails can't breathe.

I also only wear 2 rings, and other jewellery gets annoying very quickly.

I have never really wanted to try makeup at all, I did have a lipstick and eyeliner years ago but looked somewhere between Robert Smith and a 5 year old playing. I am much better off looking natural.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 06/06/2019 06:28

If anything a cream makes my skin feel better because it’s dry and tight without.

But if you feel powder caking on then you are using far too much.

Orchidoptic · 06/06/2019 06:19

I can feel and hate makeup. No autism here. Autism does seem to be just the jump-to thing. I just have extremely sensitive skin.

borntobequiet · 06/06/2019 05:29

I can feel makeup and dislike it, but I have poor skin (teenage and adult acne) and so use a good tinted moisturiser, which is bearable, to even out skin tone. I’m fine with it at work but remove it when I get home. I too can’t stand nail varnish on my fingernails! Pps have described the uncomfortable sensation very well. I have no problem with it on my toenails.

Gingerkittykat · 06/06/2019 05:18

I have sensory issues and absolutely hate the feel of make up in my skin or jewellery. I also hate the smell and feel of hair products.

As you can tell I'm not much of a girly girl.

(I also hate wearing shoes at all but have to tolerate what other people would call ugly flat shoes, have no interest in handbags, hate the feel of most materials so have got to be the most unfashionable person around!)

Oddly I do love nail varnish though, don't feel it at all although some give off an unpleasant smell for ages after you apply it.
