What about the women's world cup?!

Hi everyone, I read a couple of threads on the sports bit of Mumsnet and realised I was only reading about men's football. The women's world cup starts on 7th June and it's a really important year for supporting and promoting the game for women and girls. For those that don't know, a bit of history is that the women’s game was huge in the UK between the world wars (crowds of 55,000 with 14,000 waiting outside!), and large numbers of working class factory women playing in teams all over the country over many years - becoming household names and raising lots of money for returned soldiers and mining communities. Then the FA banned women from playing, for 50 years. When the FA finally lifted the ban in the 70s, women players faced horrendous treatment and the game has been struggling to come back ever since.

So it's brilliant that football is having a comeback. Here's where it's on in London londonist.com/london/sport/womens-world-cup-2019-football-where-to-watch-london-screenings

Not rtft

Earlier i heard a big loud blokey cheer (windows open)

I said to dh, oh, is there a big match tonight?

He said yes, the womens world Cup England v Norway

Big blokey cheer in neighbourhood like when England men or spurs or arsenal playing is big deal.

Too excited and caught up in the moment to post at the time, but thought that was a great performance from England women. Such a treat to watch s team that can finish (I am a Southampton supporter so not used to goal scoring)

Jsmith99 · 27/06/2019 23:32

Let’s hope thousands of young girls watched that game tonight and decided that Steph Houghton and Lucy Bronze are better ‘influencers’ than some vacuous idiot on YouTube or Love Island.

andyoldlabour · 27/06/2019 23:20

Very impressive - go!

Charley50 · 27/06/2019 23:07

Glad that made sense to you @LineRunner ... it barely did to me!

LineRunner · 27/06/2019 22:58

Thanks @Charley50

Often in the past with men's footy I have watched on tv and had the radio commentary on.

Charley50 · 27/06/2019 22:52

You can watch it on 5 live and get different commentary. It was a bit disconcerting as I thought we were watching BBC and wondered why the news was on at half time, which didn't fit with the film of the players, but the commentary was alright.
Whoop whoop btw! X

LineRunner · 27/06/2019 21:56

Yay !!

HiHoToffee · 27/06/2019 21:52

Semi Finals! ⚽️⚽️⚽️

LineRunner · 27/06/2019 21:42

They are going to have to practise their penalties.

LineRunner · 27/06/2019 21:41

Defence still holding up Smile

HiHoToffee · 27/06/2019 21:39

Oh no saved

HiHoToffee · 27/06/2019 21:38

Penalty

HiHoToffee · 27/06/2019 21:27

Commentator's curse Wink

LineRunner · 27/06/2019 21:24

They're much more confident in defence than they used to be

HiHoToffee · 27/06/2019 21:22

Great clearance from Houghton

LineRunner · 27/06/2019 21:21

I've had to turn the sound off and do my own commentary.

This is brilliant!! (That's not my commentary - it's a lot better than that. It's got proper football words in it and everything.)

MockerstheFeManist · 27/06/2019 21:18

It's coming home, it's coming.....

Norges are petulant and want too much time.

Bring on the Froggies.

IceRebel · 27/06/2019 21:14

That was sensational. Shock

HiHoToffee · 27/06/2019 21:13

Wow!

HiHoToffee · 27/06/2019 21:03

Phew

HiHoToffee · 27/06/2019 21:02

Second half, go Lionesses!

HiHoToffee · 27/06/2019 20:53

I agree about the commentary but be happy that Phil Neville is manager and not a commentator.

IceRebel · 27/06/2019 20:50

as I have a feeling if I do anything and take my eyes off the screen things will go badly for England

I know what you mean, I can't even play that well known song. The home it comes one not actual name but superstitious I know it won't change anything, but it's still not something I want to risk Grin

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 27/06/2019 20:46

Couldn't possibly comment during the match as I have a feeling if I do anything and take my eyes off the screen things will go badly for England but what a great first half
