How about persuading women and girls that they don't need them, the same way the cosmetics industry spends large amounts of money persuading them that they do? Persuasion or discussion isn't a ban. Nobody is not allowing anything

I was thinking of campaigns for vegetarianism. I know some extremists would like to ban meat production, but personally I think it's better to persuade people not to eat meat and a lot of other vegetarians do too.

This is so disingenuous there is little point in responding. Anti- smoking , anti- hunting and anti- drink driving legislation came because of campaigns which led to the banning of smoking in all public places, the banning of hunting and the imposition of strict levels of alcohol.

Smoking and drinking in moderation and still driving are not technically banned but the level of opprobrium, especially for the latter, is such that it might as well be.

Anyway, last time I tried painting my finger nails (last August, I think, for an extended family do), I had to roll up a couple of fags first (cos strands of tobacco curling from your nail varnish is not really a good look), then took my perfectly painted fingernails out to the patio for a fag (i.e. for me, not just my finger nail), and promptly got a gnat glued to middle finger nail, left hand.

I was quite pissed off about that.

Well if you're still wearing nail varnish then there will still be a market and the beauty industry won't be destroyed will it? Clearly I'd like women to love themselves as they naturally are, which is amazing, but that's a matter of persuasion and discussion, not control. The cosmetics industry tells women something different, that we need products to improve or decorate ourselves. I disagree.

As I already said women should do what they want, so obviously not like totalitarianism, if that word is to mean anything (BTW men have been actual totalitarians, controlling every aspect of people's lives. They're doing it right now in China, get upset about that, not an imaginary feminist position). Like I said I'm looking forward to when women are free and we don't have huge multi-billion pound industries breathing down our necks telling us what to do and how to be. If women want to keep buying nail varnish or all the other stuff obviously that won't happen. I'll keep pointing out that men don't have to do this though.

There been claims nails stop women becoming heart surgeons. Cause yeah, that's why women dont go into surgery as much as men. Cause of acrylics.

No I said there maybe be plenty of men who would paint their nails but dont because the patriachy gives them a view of what they are allowed to do and not allowed to do. I also said that nails are good example of how things were dictated to women in the past but not now. Because just as many (if not more) women on this very thread are telling you they dont do their nails and their lives arent impacted one bit. So great, women used to feel they had to. But now they can choose to and not feel judged if they dont. But then it turns out, they will be judged if they do, by some women.

Nails are one of the few areas that I dont believe women are pressured into doing, not any more.
