“Report, block, ignore. It’s only social media. But this week someone who isn’t an anonymous idiot, but a named journalist on a well-known news website, suggested that I and several other women journalists should be milkshaked for the crime of attending a meeting set up to defend the 2010 Equality Act. Yes, for the offence of supporting existing legislation we were asking for assault. Fellow feminist writers say they’re only surprised it hasn’t happened already.”

'would you punch a Nazi' argument. My answer to that is No^
Peaceful action all the way. Smile

'would you punch a Nazi' argument.
Absolutely. We are so lucky to live in a country which operates by the Rule of Law. In this case, OAP 1861.

We're also so lucky to have EU elections in which it would appear the Nazis across the EU27 and extreme right wingers and tories here, are being beaten with votes. Smile

Janice Turner is a truly awful writer, but she has probably helped us defeat a few of them with the ballot box, which is as it should be.

Thanks for posting the article OP. Smile

Just to stand up for Helen Lewis - she absolutely did not stand up for Milkshaking - when I heard her on the news quiz she said she understood why people thought it was funny when it happened to Farage - but it wa the thin end of the Wedge - as now people were encouraging Milkshaking of Helen Lewis - for having the temerity of defending Feminists - she then made a jokey comment (it was the news quiz) about preferring G&T to dairy - on the other hand Zoe Williams - sounded stupid pathetic and entitled - supporting it as a Ludic act in the great tradition of European clowns - common assault is what it is Zoe

The milkshake incident, whilst wrong, was so obviously a set up.

It's the 'would you punch a Nazi' argument. My answer to that is No.

AlwaysComingHome · 26/05/2019 13:22

From a security point of view, if you are close enough to throw a milkshake you are close enough to throw acid. I wouldn’t blame a bodyguard for not waiting before taking the attacker down.

SunsetBeetch · 26/05/2019 09:44

Thank you, truth

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 25/05/2019 22:06

I’m with Janice. There is no moral superiority in throwing milkshake at someone you disagree with.

It’s a yucky version of #Nodebate. Not in my name.

Caucho · 25/05/2019 21:31

Whilst milkshake throwing is far different to killing people those who approve of it and find it all a big laugh do seem to harbour some level of similarities

Caucho · 25/05/2019 21:26

It’s likely Jo Cox’s killer also thought he was being righteous in his actions and deserved what was coming to her. She would have been one of those left tree huggers subverting our country’s independence by campaigning to remain in the EU and betraying the British native population in her support for Muslims and foreigners.

woman19 · 25/05/2019 21:21

Viewing this through your lens of Brexit vs Remain you use the killing of Jo Cox as a gotcha to excuse assaults

I thought the alleged milkshake incidents were to do with brexit and remain?

Jo Cox's assassination certainly was, but in a feminist thread about violence against women it's the actual political violence we may not discuss?

Strange.

nauticant · 25/05/2019 21:12

I'm not sure what you're up to but I'm out.

woman19 · 25/05/2019 21:10

When have I excused assaults?

FloralBunting · 25/05/2019 21:07

Turner was writing about you in her article.

Pretty much. Sickening.

nauticant · 25/05/2019 20:45

Let's get this right. Viewing this through your lens of Brexit vs Remain you use the killing of Jo Cox as a gotcha to excuse assaults, discounted as "alleged", being carried out on Brexiteers.

Turner was writing about you in her article.

In Janice Turner's article (someone's posted the link upthread) she refers both to the milkshakings and the violent imagery directed at GC women. She uses the term 'moral licence' for those who think that their righteous beliefs give them a free pass in whatever they then do to those they perceive as the non-righteous, be they right wing politicians, GC feminists or any othre group that doesn't share their opinions.

I agree with her and think this is a dangerously slippery slope. I also think your attempt to link the 'Breaking Point' poster and the murder of Jo Cox is a stretch.

This is pretty much what I said in my last comment so, as I've said my piece, I'll leave it to other posters to kick this around for the rest of the thread.

woman19 · 25/05/2019 20:29

it's particularly relevant to GC feminists as it's easy to see how the moral licence of their baseball bat-wielding, death in grease fire-wishing opponents can easily escalate to real-life (indeed 'literal') violenc^

Are you talking about alleged milkshake incidents here or violence against GC women?

Which is why the Jo Cox case is so important.

I'm puzzled as to why a thread initially about actual violence against women has posters so loathe to examine her assassination following the inciteful extreme right breaking point posters.

In a range of examples of alleged political violence, the crime committed against her, and our democracy as a result, is the very gravest.

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASaving · 25/05/2019 20:28

How complacent we are about our peaceful country, stable democracy and largely safe streets. But if we reject the universal values that underpin them during this period of flux and uncertainty they are far from secure.

This sums up very well why I feel quite afraid a lot of the time. I've always loved the UK, I've always felt so proud to live somewhere that didn't go in for the exact kind of bat shittery that it currently goes in for. I don't know how it's all gone so massively fucking wrong.

nauticant · 25/05/2019 20:19

It alludes to the fact that ideologies allowed to float free of reality and reason end up being much like religions.

woman19 · 25/05/2019 20:16

I suppose trying to swerve the debate to a tenuous link between a poster and an MP being shot dead is better than the likes of Zoe Williams being ok with people being milkshaked or spat on, but not by much

Sorry, I thought you were discussing perceived 'moral compass' and violence towards politicians?

if you are an 'anti-fascist' and you use violent means to attack and suppress the views you deem unacceptable, then you are not anti-fascist, you are a fascist

To which 'attack's are you referring?

It's doing God's work against evil doers
No idea what this alludes to.

nauticant · 25/05/2019 20:07

It's doing God's work against evil doers. Against others who probably shouldn't even be considered to be real people. We know what kinds of places that thinking leads to.

FloralBunting · 25/05/2019 19:59

Yes, I totally understand that the left wing fundies think that their version of assault are much fluffier and more acceptable than the right wing ones. Eggs, milkshakes, it all just food products, innit? Ha ha. And then it's not, it's other forms of intimidation like hounding people down the street or chucking less cuddly substances like bleach.

God, I am so sick and tired of this bollocks from the left that minimises and justifies the exact behaviour which they would condemn from the biggest platform if the right wing did it. It's fucking hypocritical and anyone who indulges in that minimization, from twats on Twitter to Owen Jones style columns needs to be directly challenged every bloody time.

To be clear; if you are an 'anti-fascist' and you use violent means to attack and suppress the views you deem unacceptable, then you are not anti-fascist, you are a fascist.

Hope this fucking helps.

Freespeecher · 25/05/2019 19:48

woman19 · 25/05/2019 19:21

The facts of the Jo Cox case, however, were at least partially established.

There were and are some very ugly reactions to that utterly barbaric extreme right wing attack, by the extreme right, of course.

woman19 · 25/05/2019 19:10

Alleged milkshake or yoghurt throwing incidents
Until the facts of the case are established, they're allegations.

Freespeecher · 25/05/2019 19:06

"Alleged milkshake or yoghurt throwing incidents"!

I don't think there's any doubt they happened, it's just the reaction to them that's being discussed.
