Spoiled ballots?

As far as I can see there is no point to the election on Thursday - the MEPs will have nothing to do wish I'd stood. So I am seriously considering using it as an opportunity to spoil my ballot with Woman - Adult Human Female.

Any thoughts?

Just voted green with a heavy heart.

Now, how do we stop Boris becoming PM?

SirVixofVixHall · 23/05/2019 20:09

I voted but wrote in the box of the person I voted for. I hope it doesn’t get thrown out, but I took a chance on it.
I would vote green, but I just can’t vote for them for “non men” and The Challenor case.

cardibach · 23/05/2019 20:01

Nobody really cares about spoilt ballots. Any vote not against Farage and Tommy Ten Names might as we’ll be for them. I’m as GC as the next Adult Human Female, but do you think those guys will defend you?

Freespeecher · 23/05/2019 19:41

I'd assumed the Greens would be the main beneficiary of the Remain protest vote as people still held the Lib Dems U-turn on tuition fees against them, but their recent surge in the Local Elections seems to show they (LDs) have managed to turn that particular page.

It also struck me that, had the Euros taken part before the Locals, then it might well have been Change UK that ended up riding that particular wave but momentum (not that Momentum) seems to be with the Lib Dems and the CHUKs look to be over before they've even begun.

Interesting times etc etc.

womanhuman · 23/05/2019 19:21

If it had been a GE I’d have absolutely spoiled.

womanhuman · 23/05/2019 19:19

As all the (remain) parties are about as bad as each other WRT TWAW I held my nose and voted LD.

I’ll continue telling parties in other ways that TWAM.

AdoraBell · 23/05/2019 18:49

I completely agree RedToothBrush. I voted Lib Dem as they seem more likely to get the majority in my area.

NowtSalamander · 23/05/2019 18:28

I spoiled my vote. Put some Xs in the boxes where women were on the ballot and then wrote the correct definition of a woman alongside.

My daughters came with me - it’s the second time we’ve done it. We have a chat about how the suffragettes suffered so we must vote, but how we need to change the conversation around women for the sake of their future.

It’s all a bit weird and uncomfortable - I’m not sure if it’s right or not really. But then no party really represents me over Brexit either - I voted remain but I think we should probably respect the referendum result. So it reflects that I have no representation at all...Confused

RedToothBrush · 23/05/2019 18:02

Every vote cast that's not for the Brexit Party, keeps the popular vote for them down a little. This is psychologically and tactically important for the future even if your vote does not help win a seat.

HumberElla · 23/05/2019 17:20

Right, I teetered on the edge of spoiling my ballot but voted Change Uk in the end.

I have spoken with one of our local candidates who seemed very good and experienced in nhs. Also I notice other representatives in my area are diverse, come from very science based backgrounds and also broad range of charities including one who is vocal about autistic children’s rights.

So in the basis of that and there is no actual evidence of genderbollix, I’ve voted.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 23/05/2019 16:28

Fantastic post (as ever) from RedToothBrush
I voted and didn't spoil my vote. I shed a little tear at seeing the Women's Equality Party on there - how I would have loved to vote for a party that stands up for women Sad

In the end I voted for Change UK - pro Remain and currently haven't got round to being bullied by the trans mob into eradicating women. But I'm not hopeful that will last.

Motherof3feminists · 23/05/2019 16:22

I had to hold my nose to vote as brexit is the of the moment issue that requires immediate attention. Women's rights are the long game and I expect I would be spoiling my ballot in a GE with some feminist words of outrage.

I feel uneasy about my vote but a remain party was the priority today.

I was furious with a rosetted LD person who could not answer my questions about trans ideology. "It's difficult for people with toilets" etc. You mean it's difficult for women! "Well I'm a liberal and therefore everyone should be free to be what they want to be." Well yes, as long as they aren't harming anyone else. She was the epitome of the weak minded meek handmaiden. Thankfully other people came up to tell her their thoughts so I escaped before I got opinionated Grin

I genuinely do not know what to do...

Do want feels right and truthful for you.

Antibles · 23/05/2019 15:54

The essence of a liberal democracy is to respect democratic votes. The test of your support for democracy is how you behave when the vote doesn't go your way.

I think it's disgraceful that I'm being asked to vote for MEPs again today. If I'm asked to vote in a second referendum it will be a shamefully anti-democratic outcome and I'll know where the authoritarian problem lies. Overruling or ignoring vote results because you think you know better is exactly how dictators think. It is that very human response which good political systems are designed to keep in check. Ignoring results is such a dangerous line to cross for a single issue, however important to you at the time.

Spoiling votes is fine by me. It's counted as part of the turnout. You took part. It's no voter's fault if none of the candidates are palatable.

MenuPlant · 23/05/2019 15:42

I can't see how ukip would be a vote for women's rights lol

Tanith · 23/05/2019 15:41

If Women's Rights are the most important to you, then you could vote Change or UKIP.

Change also has a female leader. UKIP had one, but no longer does.

Destinysdaughter · 23/05/2019 15:39

I looked st the website that tells you how to vote tactically if you want to remain. Unfortunately mine is Green, and since I live in Coventry, where Aimee Challenor was a member of the Green Party, I can’t do that. They’re now in the Lib Dems so can’t vote for them either!

I genuinely do not know what to do...

Binglebong · 23/05/2019 15:03

They are then sorted and the ones which look like the person intended to vote for one party, but didn’t just cross or tick are shown to the candidates to decide whether they will accept them as a vote or not.

So if you put your cross in a box next to your chosen candidate and wrote on the paper as well, I think this would mean that the candidates would look at (and read if it was short) your ballot paper and decide if it counted as a vote. What you wrote could cause the candidates not to accept it though.

This is what I did in the end. Scrawled all over it and put a cross in a box. Although I have seen so few leaflets and dislike so many parties it was a case of least worse for me!

On a seperate note: every person who has clicked on this thread has given their vote some thought. So whater you voted or not, for whoever you decided, and spoilt your ballot or not, here's to you. Thank you for caring enough to think. Wine

(That was genuine btw, just couldn't think of a less cheap way to say it!Grin)

Words of wisdom as ever @RedToothBrush

RedToothBrush · 23/05/2019 14:52

Honestly I'm struggling to decide who to vote for. I will vote but reluctantly.

I am annoyed at the suggestion that women should 'suck it up' and vote for a party because 'Brexit is more important and more pressing now' and that fighting the trans issue is something that can wait until after Brexit.

I personally don't share that vote. Not when rights are being eroded and damage is being down now, and once legislation or rules have been put into place they are a lot harder to reverse. You have to first have a result to review policy, which in effect ultimately means a scandal that has broken on such a scale that forces slow, beaucratic jobsworths to be forced to change things. Anyone who saw last nights panorama might realise that even then it can change nothing, because these issues affect the vulnerable most (as in people who can't or don't vote for a variety of reasons).

The fight can't wait.

And wait until when?

We still don't know when Brexit will be done. And what do we class as done? When we formally leave the EU (who knows another extension might happen), when we end the transition phase (if we get one) or once we get a final trade deal with the EU completed?

This is the problem for me. Brexit isn't a singular event. It's an ongoing process that one way or another is going to go on and dominate politics for years yet. Possibly a decade or more.

Meanwhile the trans issue is actively harming people right now. Vulnerable groups of children, ethnic minorities, families, old skool transsexuals. As well as eroding at the very concept of democratic debate and political oversight and accountability.

Personally I hope that people will vote, as I think the concept of political debate and political oversight is most at risk if the Brexit Party get a decent result which they can catapult off and destroy the Tory party in the process (if you are not familiar with the word the term 'brexcel' as in incel who uses Brexit to further aims is one that I've seen coined with a certain amount of legitimacy and merit). Women's rights will most definitely suffer with a very hard Brexit.

There is no 'right' answer here.

Women's rights are at severe risk due to a pincer movement by the left and right. RIGHT NOW.

Some of the 'you must vote because the trans issue is less important and we can fight it later' sentiment does feel like it's belittling the scale of the issue and I take somewhat personally as no one really wanting to fight for people who have been already badly effected. It's like saying, you just aren't important enough for me, and brushing it under the carpet until a 'more convenient time'.

At the same time I am very aware that voter demoralisation and the trans issue were deliberately used in the USA election to further Trump's aim. I'm mindful of the same dynamic here.

Spoiling my ballot is not what I plan to do. I can however understand why some want to do it and in some ways I'm glad. Though I fear the implications all the same.

I just hope that everyone planning to spoil their vote has through long and hard about their decision from both angles and come to an informed decision on that basis.

The essence of a liberal democracy is the basic right to disagree on politics and express that political view without coercising people by authoritarian means of control.

We are in this mess because of rising authoritarianism on all sides. We aren't going to get out of it, with more of the same! You have to understand and value the underpinning principles of liberal democracy in order to fight for its preservation.

Its the heart and soul of the current political argument that everyone seems to have forgotten, even amongst those who profess they believe in those principles.

And that's why authoritarianism is winning.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 23/05/2019 14:15

I just got another flyer from the Lib Dem’s through my door! Geez. It’s bad enough the neighbour opposite has a big Lib Dem sign in their window!

deydododatdodontdeydo · 23/05/2019 14:11

I do hope people vote today, and I do think a no vote AND a spoiled vote IS a vote for Farage, (not a good thing) but I do appreciate that not everyone sees it like that.

Nonsense, I hate all this stuff. A vote for Farage is a vote for Farage, nothing less.
People often tell me "if you don't vote, you can't complain", and if I haven't voted for whoever they wanted me to: "oh well, you may as well have voted for "x"".
No.

Binglebong · 23/05/2019 13:56

Women fought for the right for all women to have the choice to vote. Feminism is about the liberation of women. I will do whatever the hell I want with my vote and I will not accept other women attempting to guilt trip me by bringing the suffragettes into it.

Well put.

I did swear, she's right. It was a fucking.

But I HAD apologised already and then to be told to RTFT after that outraged me.

Sorry again, Jessica and Bellini.
