One is going to hit it's target within hours. One has failed to raise much cash in the time allowed.

Curious.

Maya's fund has nearly reached the second target now, with over 2000 donors.

borntobequiet · 07/05/2019 08:36

Then some of the other teachers started giving him penises from other animals, mainly as a joke.
I'm sorry to say this sort of thing has never happened in any school I have worked at.

AncientLights · 07/05/2019 00:00

Well that has to be dullest museum shop in history. I agree with a pp that the best part of a museum is usually the shop - after the cafe that is. I do, however, find myself strangely tempted by the clitoris knitting pattern.

I can't imagine thinking a vagina museum would be a fun day out. Surely there's only so much you can say about vaginas (and I'm a GP). Maybe the directors are like the awful presenter of the naked dating C4 show who calls everything between a woman's waist and knees her "vagina".
I do like gruesome medical pathology museums though like the Surgeons museum in Edinburgh. They have a few pickled vaginas.
I'd much rather support Maya.

everythingthelighttouches · 06/05/2019 21:14

Donated

Mumminmum · 06/05/2019 17:52

The penis museum got started by a head master. He had a discussion with some friends about how different parts fo animals were used and told them he had used a bull's penis a s a whip when he was herding cattle as a boy. Later one of the teachers went to help with the butchering of some cattle and asked the head master if he would like some bull's penises. He got four. Then some of the other teachers started giving him penises from other animals, mainly as a joke.

Endofthedays · 06/05/2019 17:33

The Penis museum is full of penises in jars from different species. Is that what they are planning to do with vaginas in Camden?

borntobequiet · 06/05/2019 17:26

Or if you’re planning a trip to Germany

I'd rather see a veg museum. I'd donate to that.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 06/05/2019 16:25

I'd like to see a vagina museum, actually.

If the premise was curating the history of gynaecology, culture of birth practices around the world, what contraception did for women, what a vagina is (and what it is not) and how to look after it, what female sexuality is and why we don't know much about it, what normal vaginas are and what is not normal (endometriosis etc), how vaginas and female sexuality have been represented in art and media, what happens at menarche/pregnancy/menopause, venus de willendorf, sheila nan gigs, all that sort of stuff.

First and foremost inclusion? Bog off. Yes to having stuff about trans surgery and treatment and how a neo vagina is not the same as a vagina. But, not first and foremost.

There is a lot of ignorance and shame about female bodies, and a museum could do powerful work to change that.

But not if their first and foremost focus is on biological and physiological untruths.

The mind boggles at what sort of exhibits would be on display at a vagina museum. I've got one, I don't need to see it in a museum, thanks.

borntobequiet · 06/05/2019 14:32

Well I see there’s nothing for the kiddies. Where are the pencil sharpeners and pencils with a glittery feather on the end I ask?

butteryellow · 06/05/2019 14:16

I'm not sure how to take a load of merchandise with 'Vaginas are normal' on it.

I don't really get what they're trying to say.. I mean, yes, they're normal, 50% of us have them - are they trying to say looking at museums about them should be normal? That all vaginas are normal? That talking about them should be normal?

I'm not sure I agree with all of those statements really. After all, you do need to know when something about your vagina is abnormal, so a doctor can sort it out, and I don't think vaginas really are a great topic for dinner conversation, nor do I really want to go to a museum full of them (!) - although I would be interested in an exhibition with interesting medical/scientific information I suppose..

www.vaginamuseum.co.uk/shop

Here you go.

borntobequiet · 06/05/2019 13:33

The best bit about most museums is the shop, in my opinion (not very cultured). What would be sold in the Vag Museum shop?

LassOfFyvie · 06/05/2019 13:31

So you are surprised that men would donate to a museum called 'vagina museum', in camden, when this museum is basically being put together by trans women [males]?

Which bit is surprising to you? That men would pay for vag even if it isn't actual vag?

The whole premise of a "vagina museum" from any point of view seems to me utter nonsense. From the list of board members you are hugely exaggerating the involvement of trans women. However to be clear even if it were being promoted by the most radical of radical feminist women I still would think the same.

blushsorry , lass... I somehow leapt to the assumption those figures were for the MF not the VM one - probably because I assumed the latter would have gleaned about thruppence ha'penny

No worries ! I agree about thruppence ha'penny being the more probable result.

sackrifice · 06/05/2019 13:22

The crowdfunder opened on 20th March. It has raised £47, 631 to date

LassOfFyvie · 06/05/2019 13:19

is that the amount that was raised in the full 28 days or however long it was open?

The crowdfunder opened on 20th March. It has raised £47, 631 to date.

there are surely plenty of women who have sums in the region of £10-100 for a one-off cause they deem important

The 2 highest single donations of £500 each were made by persons with a feminine first name. The next 2 highest donations were made by people called Mark and James. Quite a lot of the £25 and over donations were made by persons with masculine first names.

This is the update from the crowdfunder page.

Dearest vagina lovers,

Thank you so much for your support so far. In light of the fact that it is likely we are not going to reach our fundraising target, we have made the decision to pursue a social investment loan to bridge this gap and ensure the Vagina Museum can still go ahead at Camden Market.

BogglesGoggles · 06/05/2019 12:44

You lost me at vagina museum.

sackrifice · 06/05/2019 12:43

The whole premise of a "vagina museum" seems such utter nonsense. That is why I am surprised

I am confused...I know nothing about the vagina museum but is that the amount that was raised in the full 28 days or however long it was open?

DpWm · 06/05/2019 12:43

Especially a Vagina Museum that never dares to utter the forbidden words "woman" or "girl". I actually agree there and wld never financially support it.

LassOfFyvie · 06/05/2019 12:40

Average £38.8 - there are surely plenty of women who have sums in the region of £10-100 for a one-off cause they deem important , so I'm not sure why you'd be surprised?
