I can’t believe what I’ve just watched. Eddie Izzard is on Joe Rogan saying ALL bathrooms should be gender neutral and completely dismissed the concerns women have that Joe brought up. He dismissed it as “people always complain when there’s change”

The whole thing is so selfish and entitled.

If we don't discuss it or speak up, it remains socially unacceptable and it's easy to be dismissed as a vocal minority or extremists.

My speaking up consists of posting on MN and the other things I said in my post. Other people might feel happier about using twitter, but I'm not going to do that - MN already takes up too much of my time. But we don't all have to do everything, some people prefer to interact with politicians and organisations and some prefer to have a wider social media presence.

We need to tackle all fronts between us, but every individual doesn't have to do all those things.

FloralBunting · 06/05/2019 10:40

would be beneficial to the cause if more of the great brains here went elsewhere to discuss this with others in less enlightened corners of the Internet.

Actually wow. You missed the part where this was the last bastion on the internet for ages where women could talk even in restricted terms about any of this? Where any woman who mentioned it elsewhere online was censored and banned for bigotry? Where women have been threatened with actual violence and destroyed lives for raising this?

Give me strength.

HorsewithnoPhD · 06/05/2019 10:39

...If that's what he means, what's the basis for objecting? (Granted the train toilet is a paddling pool of piss)

You have answered your own question there, Bud.

OldCrone · 06/05/2019 10:37

Because it's an elite project being imposed from the top down and ordinary people have been forbidden a say, backed up by politicians, aggressive lobby groups, corporations and social media giants.

There are some big, wealthy players in this. We're have some very powerful people fighting against us.

Jennifer Pritzker (billionaire transwoman) and George Soros, to name a couple.

Jennifer Pritzker gave $2 million to the University of British Columbia to establish a chair for transgender studies. This builds on another grant of $1.35 million to the University of California’s Palm Center to study how transgender people fare in the military.

"Personally I can't see the point in arguing with idiots on the internet. It would be better to write to MPs, challenge companies and organisations on their interpretation of the equality act, challenge schools on their policies which are having harmful effects on girls..."

The point is, the more people who are seen to speak up the more people who are empowered to do so themselves the more people who will write to their mps, and challenge companies. If we don't discuss it or speak up, it remains socially unacceptable and it's easy to be dismissed as a vocal minority or extremists.

"I am so tired of I'm GC but ... disingenuity."

Is that directed at me?

BertrandRussell · 06/05/2019 10:28

The cognitive dissonance between the perception of trans people as the most disadvantaged and marginalised group in society and the power they appear to have at their command is, I find, quite paralysing. It makes my brain stutter......

LangCleg · 06/05/2019 10:24

So why are TRAs still winning on this?

Off you go, then. See how you get on and report back.

lookatallthepeaches · 06/05/2019 10:13

I need to get on with my day - one point I will make, is that it would be beneficial to the cause if more of the great brains here went elsewhere to discuss this with others in less enlightened corners of the Internet. The more people who do this, the more likely we are to reach the critical mass of women speaking up and expressing their opinions to be able to stop this. Every new school/uni/library that opens sees more unisex toilets. It is taking over. They can't ban all women.

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 06/05/2019 10:11

DH is on a planning team in his company for their move to a new office which is being built. One of the first thing to architects told this team was that there would be no unisex toilets aside form accessible ones ‘because we know everyone hates them’.

I’m really not sure where this idea that everyone things they’re great comes from. I hate them. My mum hates them. DD hates them. DH hates them.

lookatallthepeaches · 06/05/2019 10:05

Yeah of course. But any deterrent to asking questions whether that's moderation bias or mob rule means that nobody is seen asking questions or rather are put off if they see what happens when someone does.

So why are TRAs still winning on this?

While politicians and forum owners believe facilities should be mixed, women who don't consent to this are gonna be steamrolled

RedDogsBeg · 06/05/2019 10:02

How many places have these single fully enclosed toilets opening onto a public space? Very few and if they are down a corridor out of general sight then there are still issues with safety. To convert en masse all toilets in public buildings, offices, etc. would be very costly and in some buildings impossible, what then? The TRAs and their groupies just expect and want in those cases that the female toilets become unisex, not the male toilets of course, and the statistics listed show exactly how unsafe that makes female toilets/changing rooms when that happens.

You say outside of this forum no-one cares and is in fact happy to share toilets with members of the opposite sex, not the case when the NUS and UK Border Force were each having a conference at a particular hotel. The super woke NUS decided unilaterally that the toilets would be 'gender neutral' and stuck notices on the doors of the female toilets to that effect, the Border Force delegates were furious and not prepared to kow tow to the NUS and their invented rules, unsurprisingly it all kicked off.

There is evidence that girls and boys are restricting the amount of fluid they consume during the day at schools where these new style toilets have been introduced - the reason: they don't like these toilets and don't want to use them. There has been a marked increase of girls suffering from UTI's due to this. Parents are starting to challenge schools on this policy.

OldCrone · 06/05/2019 09:58

It isn't irrelevant when this is the only online place you're allowed to express any concern about unisex facilities.

Doesn't that concern you at all? That asking questions isn't allowed?

Datun · 06/05/2019 09:57

The vast majority are not.

All the polls that are done show that the vast majority of people want to maintain single sex facilities.

You are very uninformed about all of this.

Datun · 06/05/2019 09:56

It isn't irrelevant when this is the only online place you're allowed to express any concern about unisex facilities.

This is all you need to know. In places where you are allowed to express an opinion, the opinion is to maintain single sex facilities.

I mean it's absolute nonsense to think that women would advocate for mixed sex facilities.

If that was the case, they would be using the gents. They would have done it by now.

lookatallthepeaches · 06/05/2019 09:55

"No one, apart from a very vocal minority, wants mixed sex facilities."

The silent majority are quieter than ever from where I'm standing. If you spend all your time on mumsnet and GCreddit it's easy to believe that everyone is speaking up. But that's a self selecting group who are onto this. The vast majority are not.

Datun · 06/05/2019 09:54

Most females in politics and visible online, as you know, are saying "yes", and as such, feel free to not consent, but all that will mean in self excluding.

Of course they're not. Most women aren't saying anything because most of them don't know about it, and the ones who do are petrified.

Look at Maya Forstater, being fired for saying humans can't change sex!

lookatallthepeaches · 06/05/2019 09:52

"Women say no. It's their consent, their boundaries.

What other (online) women say is irrelevant. My consent is not in their gift."

some women are saying no. Most females in politics and visible online, as you know, are saying "yes", and as such, feel free to not consent, but all that will mean in self excluding.

There is no law that prevents men from using females toilets. There is no law that prevents service providers from making their facilities unisex.

It's about changing the culture so that customs and protocols are maintained in favour of women's safety.

It's about promoting the fact that there are exemptions to uphold women's single sex facilities, in equality law. It's about challenging the equality policy of service providers like swimming pools, where they have got it wrong, because they have only heard the arguments of trans lobbyists.

It's about challenging local councils, the NSPCC, MPs, the D of E, every regulatory body you can think of.

No one, apart from a very vocal minority, wants mixed sex facilities.

FuckingHadEnough · 06/05/2019 09:51

Why is he even weighing in on this? I though he identified as a man who likes make-up? I didn't think he identified as female. Wearing lipstick does not grant you access to women's toilets. If you feel threatened in the men's toilets for your choices then instead of feeling entitled to share women's toilets why not educate men and boys to not feel threatened by men who like make-up? Gender neutral toilets should not have to be suffered by women. This man is an absolute dickhead.

lookatallthepeaches · 06/05/2019 09:45

It isn't irrelevant when this is the only online place you're allowed to express any concern about unisex facilities.

To a lay person it gives them no confidence to speak up.

And if nobody but a handful of "extremists" speak up then what's going to stop it?

Datun · 06/05/2019 09:42

The single six, single unit, occupancy idea only ever comes from women, an an answer and solution to mixed sex facilities.

You won't find trans people advocating for them. Because they are transphobic. They refuse to acknowledge, by their existence, that transwomen are women.

Datun · 06/05/2019 09:40

If the need for transwomen to be safe from males deternines their needs, so too should females have space free from males. That includes transwomen, as they are male.

It always comes down to this. It's not about safety for transwomen, otherwise they would be advocating for single sex usage. Or, far more importantly, an end to male violence and male attitudes.

They don't. Ever.

Because it's about validation.

Validating a man's idea of himself is as old as the bloody hills.

lookatallthepeaches · 06/05/2019 09:39

Yes, but those statistics pertain to multiple people in the same changing rooms/toilets. I was asking for statistics which separated the risk from offenders between stalls in a room or single full enclosers opening onto public space. Because I initially thought that's what Eddie meant. But as someone pointed out- if he's wanting to chat, probably not what he had in mind after all.
