I can’t believe what I’ve just watched. Eddie Izzard is on Joe Rogan saying ALL bathrooms should be gender neutral and completely dismissed the concerns women have that Joe brought up. He dismissed it as “people always complain when there’s change”

The whole thing is so selfish and entitled.

Women have always been told that we're prudish if we don't do what men want us to do. If we're lucky. Usually it's worse things.
Water off a duck's back, and no I won't wash off theirs.

RedDogsBeg · 06/05/2019 13:04

PickleC that is the solution - males only, females only and unisex and the designation to be absolute on SEX, not feelings, not identity, not gender, just plain old sex which you can't change with or without a GRC. Go in the toilet for your sex or the one for both sexes, simple.

PickleC · 06/05/2019 12:39

I am so fed up of being told that we have to accept shared facilities and that if we dont we are somehow odd, prudish or prejudiced.

On holiday overseas there were some unisex toilets in a bar .... full on urinals one end with a very low wall, cubicles along a wall. They stank to high heaven, piss everywhere and what was striking is that if a man walked in and saw me they always did a doubletake and apologised. I dont think they were any more comfortable than i was. The women on the trip still see those as the worst toilets we have ever used.

Can I imagine my gran happy to access facilities that are unisex, or my sister with a young baby, or colleagues of multiple faiths? No. And yet we need to 'get over it' apparently. And I cannot help thinking we are being told this because we are women and all the old prejudices about our rights and opinions are still out there in a shallow grave ready to rise again when another group's feelings are deemed more important. At best there is obliviousness to the discomfort and risks we face and at worst this is recognised and dismissed. An occupational hazard. Something we need to put up and shut up about ..... after all what's a few assaults? Ladies know your place.

By comparison a recent trip the a theatre saw womens, mens and unisex toilets. Everyone could use facilities they felt comfortable with and were safe for them. How long before every trip out I make or every day at work has a search for non unisex toilets I feel happy to use though?

He's a knob.

IrishGal21 · 06/05/2019 12:24

IN a crematorium???? ffs when someone is feeling esp vulnerable the last thing you want is to see a man there

TigerCubScout · 06/05/2019 11:38

In the clip in the OP, Joe Rogan says, towards the end, "huh, there are no real answers. What do we do here?".

Keep toilets and sports single sex - that's a pretty simple answer.

allmywhat · 06/05/2019 11:33

feel free to not consent,

... because your consent is irrelevant.

That's what he's saying, isn't it? Thanks for that, Eddie "I don't need your consent" Izzard.

Justhadathought · 06/05/2019 11:31

I need to get on with my day - one point I will make, is that it would be beneficial to the cause if more of the great brains here went elsewhere to discuss this with others in less enlightened corners of the Internet. The more people who do this, the more likely we are to reach the critical mass of women speaking up and expressing their opinions to be able to stop this. Every new school/uni/library that opens sees more unisex toilets. It is taking over. They can't ban all women

It's not the internet that we need to be targeting, it is the general public, out there on the streets and in our towns and cities. Most internet arenas are small and exclusive to people who share similar views. Out in the real world most people have not got a clue what is going on. We also need to be targeted people in positions of power and authority. It's largely a waste of time trying convert people who have already signed up for something.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 06/05/2019 11:31

So he's a white, rich, straight guy, yes?

So how does he even think he has a valid point to make here? So he likes to wear female clothing - so he things that this means that all men should be able to mix with women in the loos?

Datun · 06/05/2019 11:30

feel free to not consent,

Ugh.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 06/05/2019 11:27

Women's rights are not his to give away.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 06/05/2019 11:20

Most females in politics and visible online, as you know, are saying "yes", and as such, feel free to not consent, but all that will mean in self excluding.

Many female politicians etc are to afraid to say anything against it because they stand the very real danger of getting a visit from the thought police and losing their jobs.

‘Feel free not to consent’. Well that doesn’t really work does it. I can not consent to unisex toilets but if all the available toilets are unisex then I don’t have a choice.

IamHyouweegobshite · 06/05/2019 11:12

over the last few months I have come across more and more mixed toilets, at university, at a crematorium and also at work. Out of all of these toilets there is one common factor, piss on the seat/floor you name it, wherever you look there is piss, to the point where even hovering you would get urine on your clothing. It seems unlikely that a woman would have done this. So, either it's men who either don't care about what they do, or think ha, a women will be in here and can't sit down.

Michelleoftheresistance · 06/05/2019 11:08

Quite. Izzard is very clear on what's in it for him.

He's clear women will complain - that there's nothing in it for them - his opinion is that they must learn to get over it.

And there, summarised, is the deep misogyny and belief that women are some kind of subspecies who are there for the servicing of men that underpins every single aspect of the TRA movement.

Datun · 06/05/2019 11:05

Also below the line comments on all MSM articles which allow them.

No-one wants to abolish sex segregation in toilets and changing rooms.

The only real question you have to answer is what possible benefit is it to do so?

lookatallthepeaches · 06/05/2019 11:01

Thank you

OtepotiLilliane42 · 06/05/2019 10:59

lookatallthepeaches If you wish to argue the case for separate sanitary facilities for women and men there is a wealth of information on the internet to support it. I have just pulled a few links at random, starting with the Unicef guide.

And because I am a total idiot I have just realised that the C.Greed who presented the paper at the Loughborough conference (see my earlier post) is the wonderful Clara Greed who gave a talk at the Women's Place meeting in Bath, November 2018.

Whilst I have sympathy for transwomen who have genuine fears about using male public toilets I really don't think it's incumbent upon women to surrender their hard won rights to safe and decent toilet provisions.

Yes, I've noticed that about YouTube as well.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 06/05/2019 10:54

Most females in politics and visible online, as you know, are saying "yes"

I wanted to make a point about the ‘what everyone else is saying’ thing that peaches keeps raising. On platforms that are incredibly sexist and have terms & conditions based on ideology, such as twitter and facebook, you can’t actually honestly say you don’t want transwomen or men in women’s spaces, you’ll get suspended or eventually banned. You also can’t say it publicly as a politician without huge backlash as Joan McAlpine has discovered- although the real-life support via cards and messages gives a more accurate picture of what people outside of Twitter think. Somewhere where you can still be honest, is YouTube. I’ve found a very very different conversation happening there and everything from Caster Semenya to public bathrooms looks very different there to spaces like Twitter. People are absolutely thinking the same thing this feminism board does on these issues. Plenty of women and men all saying that you can’t change sex, that unisex bathrooms are ridiculous etc etc Surveys on these issues, as mentioned, also support what we are saying here. I don’t think relying on twitter or Facebook as a measure of what most people think, is wise or sensible at all. That’s not real life. It’s heavily moderated and heavily influenced by certain groups. That’s why I honestly think women should leave those platforms. We are giving them more power by engaging there and contributing to the illusion its representative of society. It isn’t.

LangCleg · 06/05/2019 10:51

The cognitive dissonance between the perception of trans people as the most disadvantaged and marginalised group in society and the power they appear to have at their command is, I find, quite paralysing.

That's queer theory for you. A libertarian ideology enabling the bourgeois and others with structural social power to be "edgy" and "subversive" while maintaining the boot on the neck of the actually oppressed or anyone lacking in structural social power. Quite how it has become associated with the left entirely escapes me.

Peaches, most commercial sites where these issues are discussed will delete/ban you for saying human beings can't change sex. I know from experience. This censorship gives proponents of trans ideology a totally distorted view of how many agree with them.

Mumsnet doesn't work that way. Any opinion can be expressed as long as you post within Talk Guidelines. TRAs tip up all the time. They are totally unprepared to defend their claims or justify their demands because up until now they've never had to. They're used to the banhammer eradicating any opposition. They expect it. They depend on it.

Upon challenge their arguments reveal the absence of intellectual rigour in their ideology. That's if they stay long enough to actually argue. Nearly all of them spontaneously combust, breaking Talk Guidelines, leading to a ban.

This is one of the only openly gender critical women's forum in the Anglophone world. And here are some figures obtained from MNHQ last August:

Number of people entering the MN site via the Feminist Chat topic:

June 2016: 15,000
June 2018: 177,000

That's a TWELVE-FOLD increase.

And that's just people entering the MN site directly into femchat. Lots of people enter Mumsnet via other routes like active talk, and then navigate to the feminism boards next.

Overall site visits in June 2018 compared to June 2016 showed an increase from 17M to 26M, which is a very healthy increase of 53%. But the impressive twelvefold increase in visitors going directly to feminism shows a significant change in behaviour.

"Again, there have been enough abuse victims and people of faith prepared to share with men who have come forward in other online spaces" @Peaches

As someone said, online spaces don't count. Anybody could be anybody. How many actual people of these faiths do you know and have talked to? I happen to know possibly hundreds of Muslims and Hindus and I can assure you they would be horrified at having to undress in front of strange men or share intimate spaces. I have a close relative who is a Muslim and lots of very close Hindu friends. I don't even have to ask them what they think of this. Knowing them is enough.
And yet men expect them to say OK, or just go elsewhere. THIS is discrimination.

OldCrone · 06/05/2019 10:47

Where women have been threatened with actual violence and destroyed lives for raising this?

And where women are losing their jobs for speaking out.

Just to add - I occasionally look at twitter, and see the same arguments as on here, so there is a presence of GC views on other platforms.
