I got the same thing as you. Nothing in that letter about stopping current treatment.

It is wrong to encourage teenagers to harm their bodies. The first line of treatment should be watch and wait + coping strategies for dysphorias of all types. When I was a teenager, I learned that is was normal for young people to often be dysphoric/depressed. It was the parent's role to help me through that. To get through each day, one at a time, and the each day was a new day worthy of living. Has society lost all common sense?

Everyone should see that documentary linked to above. The stories of the two detransitioned women (they have returned to seeing themselves as women) are heartbreaking.

At least one woman (Sametti) said she’d had surgery ‘down there’ (hysterectomy?) and had her breasts removed. Her voice is forever changed. They blame themselves for letting it happen. That is the worst thing about it. The regret and self-blame. This is why we don’t let children and young people ‘choose’ to have unnecessary surgery in any other context. It is absolute madness that we do so in this context. Nor should it be available on parents’ consent.

Sweden seems to be planning on 12 being the legal age for surgery with parents consent and 15 without parents consent. It’s absolutely abusive.

It’s good to look for research (and FFS, you know it’s a really bad problem when it’s the ethicists calling on doctors to look at what they are already doing ) and these are all good questions to ask, evidence gathering is necessary. But in other settings you would say: let’s pause on doing this nationally (so at least not offer the thing in question to any new patients coming in) until we know more. Why is this not being done?

We have the British Medical Association ethics committee and they should look at this. It’s being offered as an unevidenced treatment which is massively disproportionate when the benefits are unknown but the costs are so apparent- though with research into detransitioned people’s experiences more properly done (unlike James Caspian’s work and Bath spa university Hmm) then no doubt further harm will be uncovered. What services are being developed to support these young people?

It’s important to know that ethicists are only the gatekeepers before research goes ahead. I.e. they are mandatory to get involved and they can refuse permission for the research to happen before the research starts.

The real scandal is that none of this experimental stuff is being done as research. It’s just being presented as the established treatment for a problem. Doctors are just offering it, patients are just accepting it because why would they not, they want to feel better- and then doctors are not following up patients up with research to see how they get on. It’s only after the fact that the ethicists are asking doctors to think about what they are doing. It is good that doctors have a certain amount of latitude to innovate but good medical practice doesn’t develop healthily in a political environment where there is punishment (from TRAs) for deviating from a political goal. Doctors are culpable but it’s years and years of effective, well funded political advocacy that has brought us to this point. And the patients will have to live with this for the rest of their lives, happy or not happy.

Placemarking for now.

I thought Sweden was Europe’s Canada, the European Capital of Woke.

I think that's more us at the moment, on this subject at least.

ASwede · 30/04/2019 19:42

Nothing is ethical about this, the difference is that now it's proposed that maybe there should be research about this stuff while it's happening instead of ignoring things like why do all these young girls suffer from gender dysphoria all of a sudden, does transition work, what are the long term effects...
These girls are still guinea pigs.

TheGrey1houndSpeaks · 30/04/2019 19:26

How ethical is it to do research on a course of treatment whilst it’s actually happening??
What if the research suggests that it’s a very bad idea (now wouldn’t that be a surprise? Hmm)
Surely they know not to leave themselves wide open to potential law suits like this; what in the name of God is happening?

truthisarevolutionaryact · 30/04/2019 19:19

The difference with the public enquiry that will happen when today's children understand what was done to them below the age of consent rendering them sexless, mutilated and on drugs for the rest of their lives is that this time everyone was warned. Medics, politicians, schools, girl guides, lobby groups etc - all challenged and warned about the grooming, lies, untested drugs and silencing of all opposition.
These groups and individuals will have nowhere to hide which presumably will make the allocation of blame and compensation much easier to decide. Such an awful prospect.

ASwede · 30/04/2019 18:54

This is incorrect. The council encourages research but hormone treatments have not been suspended, instead, they want there to be research made on said hormone treatments while it continues to be given to young gender dysphoric people.

CottonDuvet · 30/04/2019 18:24

Can someone link to the Swedish Documentary please?

RedHoodGirl · 30/04/2019 18:03

From reading the letter translation it looks like they’re just setting up 3 groups to investigate it - nothing about stopping current treatment? Or am I missing something?

AlwaysComingHome · 30/04/2019 17:19

SirVixofVixHall · 30/04/2019 17:16

Friend’s daughter is 16, has other mental health issues and may be on the autistic spectrum. She has only recently been saying that she is a boy, but has already been put on cross sex hormones. I feel very, very sad about it. She is not in the UK, and apparently the parents have no say.
So thank the Lord that Sweden is seeing sense.

surterjets · 30/04/2019 16:52

It really is heartening to see this. Perhaps if politicians see that, and think of the contaminated blood inquiry in the news today, they maybe encouraged to do the same?

Not on their own of course, but with a forceful push?

KatvonHostileExtremist · 30/04/2019 16:27

The translated letter is really interesting.
"Similar developments seen in many high income counties"

ROGD spreading.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 30/04/2019 15:42

But it'll be another ten years before the loss of fertility hits them as their friends and peers settle down and have children.

I was adamant that I would never want children until I was over 30. I was a wilful, determined teenager who would have given up my fertility in an instant if it seemed to stand in the way of something that seemed vitally important to me at the time.

The thought of all these girls and young women giving up their health and their fertility is really heart-rending.

Datun · 30/04/2019 15:32

Our teens are quite a long way off finding how terrible the damage done to them is yet.

I thought that. Sammetti looking at old photos of herself and wondering, out loud, how she could ever have thought of herself as objectionable.

She is still at the stage of regretting what she looks like. And sounds like.

But it'll be another ten years before the loss of fertility hits them as their friends and peers settle down and have children.

FannyCann · 30/04/2019 15:24

Yes Nauticant I was thinking the same thing, listening to news reports about the contaminated blood scandal.

I guess 30 years or so pans out roughly along these lines;
10 years for the problem to become apparent
10 years for victims to start talking, finding each other, looking for lawyers and building a case etc
10 years for health authorities and government to do their best to slam a lid on it and lock it down.
So finally there is an enquiry, years after many of the victims have died.

It'll probably be about the same this time. Looking at poor Sametti (?) and Mika (?) on the documentary they are sad and angry about what has been done to them. But it'll be another ten years before the loss of fertility hits them as their friends and peers settle down and have children.
Our teens are quite a long way off finding how terrible the damage done to them is yet.

Datun · 30/04/2019 15:10

I've watched the Swedish documentary that came out. Was it just before this announcement?

It's extraordinary to watch these Swedish doctors try and buck pass, then blame parents, then the patients - the kids - who they admit have psychological problems, for their own bloody treatment.

To not see anything, literally none of it, from even a possible sexist viewpoint.

All whilst simultaneously freely admitting there is no long-term evidence and they don't know what they're doing!

I hadn't quite realised how divorced, how utterly isolated from the problem that they are meant to be addressing, they are.

They're not talking about social contagion, they're not talking about the women suffering from societal misogyny.

One doctor whined well what are we supposed to do if a woman finds her breasts unbearable??

Why don't you ask her why she should find a random body part unbearable, you arse?!

Thingybob · 30/04/2019 15:09

Yes I thought that but then we had Panorama and the excellent Stella OMally documentary. Maybe they didn't hit quite as hard.

Erythronium · 30/04/2019 15:07

The documentary that has just been broadcast about the treatment of ROGD girls in scandinavia probably has something to do with it. If our government could be shamed the same way, that would help.

Thingybob · 30/04/2019 15:02

Theres no way our current government would dare produce a simliar letter to the Swedish one so why is the prevailing mindset so different here in the UK?

Incidently a UK child is over twice as likely to be referred to a gender clinic compared to a child in Sweden. Surely that fact alone should be investigated as it would be if it were any other childhood disorder.

Erythronium · 30/04/2019 14:53

Excellent news. Now the same thing has to happen in the UK.

TobyandLottiesmum · 30/04/2019 14:48

Great news

Thingybob · 30/04/2019 14:12

Wow well done Sweden
