Another day, another friend insisting that THIS video will change minds and hearts

I watched it. I was doing washing up as well, so it wasn't focussed attention, but I don't recommend others force themselves through it. The production values are nice though, if you appreciate such things.

I'm just feeling lost again, turning on social media after a couple of days away and finding this shared a few times over with words explaining that nobody could be 'swayed by so-called gender-critical arguments' after seeing this all the way though.

How do intelligent women not understand that none of this has anything to do with denying the existence of people who are clearly here and all of it has to do with the fact that this ideology is a threat to women and girls?

This, the Ogre's piece denouncing JY (And the other articles about that vile human) and I need to avoid social media - except that I also have a social life that is barely real so need to go there sometimes to prove to myself I still exist.

I managed 8 minutes before the pretentious waffle and exaggerated facial expressions irritated me too much to continue.
Also, why were they dressed like a 1940s [female] film star?
And why dressed like the goddess of death in Thor Ragnorak when they were portraying a gender-critical woman?

hipsterfun · 22/04/2019 00:26

It’s such a tedious, self-regarding, attention-seeking performance. People (general people, not trans people particularly) like this do seem to expect an awful lot from those they force into an audience role.

Agree that life’s too short.

Chiochan · 22/04/2019 00:16

I used to really like Contra Points for his leftist stance, though looking back he only ever discussed cultural issues, not much actual class politics, but still he was funny and progressive. But as soon as I saw any vids of him on Trans stuff, specifically where he was describing a 'TERF', the penny dropped immediately. It was obvious to me he was describing a feminist, and that set me down the road of questioning the trans narrative.
You could say Contra Points turned me Gender Critical.

ALittleBitofVitriol · 21/04/2019 23:16

I watched a previous contrapoints video once, where contrapoints had a 'debate' with a straw man gender critical feminist - also played by contrapoints. The video ended with a menstruation fetish scene, with contrapoints sitting in a bath of red liquid.

So yeah, I won't be subjecting myself to another contrapoints video any time soon.

There was a lot of discussion on Reddit when this vid came out though.

WeRiseUp · 21/04/2019 22:34

Yes. Even if someone comes from a position I agree with but presents in such an irritating way - I won't persevere with it. Life's too short. Absolutely no one is obliged to watch it. If some people like the production values, style or humour of it good for you. I find it irritating beyond belief. And if you read our Greer in that way to start you are going to piss off and offend a lot of people. If you have something serious and worth saying, maybe don't prat around like a little dickhead in a way that puts a huge number of people off.

Lamaha · 21/04/2019 22:24

Out of interest, how can you judge it then?
I'm an adult. If someone starts speaking to me as if they're an attention seeking silly child, I'm not going to listen. Talk to me adult to adult, and I'm with you, even if I don't agree. This person was chalk on a blackboard.

Erythronium · 21/04/2019 22:23

No, I'm disagreeing with you. It's different.

BertrandRussell · 21/04/2019 22:21

HOWEVER.

As usual she stopped just before the difficult bit!
I was listening to the comedian Stuart Goldsmith talking about this and he said he wished more people would say “I don’t know”. He said he personally doesn’t know what the right thing to do about refuges, for example, and if only more people were prepared to say that maybe there would be a discussion. Polarised opinions stifle debate.

LassOfFyvie · 21/04/2019 22:20

You were trying to convince me that it is ok for Greer to refer to another person as "it".

I don't think it is.

Erythronium · 21/04/2019 22:19

Oh maybe it wasn't an author's signing. He just ran up to her. Even worse.

Erythronium · 21/04/2019 22:16

I'm not trying to convince you. It's was a statement. She can call him anything she likes and she did. Her experience, so up to her how she responds.

I didn't call him "it" because I wasn't confronted with a parody of a woman, using me as a self-validation tool, in a situation where women are supposed to be polite (author's signing). I might have felt differently about the right pronouns to use afterwards to convey how I felt about what had happened if it had been me there.

JustBecauseYouAreUniqueDoesNot · 21/04/2019 22:12

Agree with BertrandRussell. I actually found this very thought provoking and it offered me some potential answers to questions I had been grappling with.

Thanks for sharing.

LassOfFyvie · 21/04/2019 22:04

Not convinced by that. She had time to consider and finely hone her response to the ambush.

Remaining true to her beliefs she could have said "he" as you have just done.

I wonder -- are there really people (women) who move from GC to TRA?

I don't know but I'm sure I'm not the only person who was not impressed by Germaine Greer referring to the trans woman as "it"

Justhadathought · 21/04/2019 21:46

Just makes me dislike drag even more than I ever did.

FFSFFSFFS · 21/04/2019 21:38

Sigh. I really did start with an open mind. But it just fails to address the GC arguments with anything other than mocking them or claiming they are hurtful

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 21/04/2019 21:09

I wonder -- are there really people (women) who move from GC to TRA?
Theres a poster on here that insists they were fully GC but thensaw a couple of posters being nasty and that made them full TRA Hmm

Manderleyagain · 21/04/2019 20:31

Jane clare Jones wrote a response to this vid. I think it will be on her blog.

InionEile · 21/04/2019 20:21

That’s Contrapoints aka Natalie Wynn, very popular here in the US at least and has been featured in the New Yorker as a popular voice for the left combatting misinformation on YouTube etc from the alt-right. Their videos were more politics-focused until they transitioned and now it’s all trans issues all the time on the channel. Yawn. I don’t mind Natalie and if you’ve watched earlier videos before transition the campy tea-sipping character she portrays in the recent videos makes more sense. This video was a disappointment though as was a previous one on the gayness of ‘traps’ in her words (don’t ask).

There’s not much logic there. Just an insistence that anyone who questions any aspect of the trans ideology is a TERF, someone who is transphobic rather than trans-skeptic, as I am. Just because we don’t buy into the idea of laydee-brain and female feelz, it doesn’t mean we hate people who are trans. For me, what puts me off is how irrational TRAs are and how quickly a lot of TRA veer into horrible misogyny and male-style entitlement whenever they’re challenged.

Here’s the antidote:

BertrandRussell · 21/04/2019 19:03

“As for this video -- I couldn't watch it. ”
Out of interest, how can you judge it then?

Erythronium · 21/04/2019 18:58

Apparently they've done the "necessary emotional work" Lamaha. Another job on the neverending list of tasks for women to do.

Lamaha · 21/04/2019 18:54

I wonder are there really people (women) who move from GC to TRA? I can't imagine it. It would be so backward! As for this video I couldn't watch it. It's as if, failing intelligent arguments, they have to resort to costumes and campery and fake voices and acting.

BertrandRussell · 21/04/2019 18:45

I do think this one is better than many, actually. The film flam was annoying, but it was quite thoughtful and intelligent.
