'Problematic' - calling card of the Ultra Woke?

Freespeecher · 21/04/2019 10:18

Whenever I read an article which has some kind of thought or behaviour described as 'problematic', it's inevitably a giveaway that the Ultra Woke want something they class as 'wrongthink' to be banned, shut down or otherwise expunged as it represents an unwelcome detour from the One True Path?

Do others agree? And are there other such phrases that set the Spidey Sense tingling?

I wonder if you could just make up a load of bollox composite words from this thread and be taken seriously...

The diverse validity spectrum.
Problematic binary inclusion...

You could spout that shit and strike fear into the woke and cowardly - they'd be bowing, apologising and genuflecting in seconds.Grin

vicviking · 21/04/2019 14:13

Baby. Bathwater.
Do we women really want to go back to a time before anyone thought about diversity, inclusivity, gender roles, etc. Surely we can hang onto some of this stuff and weed out disingenuous claims. We claim to be critical thinkers don't we?

Lamaha · 21/04/2019 14:05

Inclusive
diversity
This is not the 50's
right side of history

Love this thread!
Also the people who reprimand others for using certain words are insinuating that "they" are just not nice people; WE are much nicer/kinder/more openminded/inclusive.

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 21/04/2019 14:05

his thread is invalidating words which are used for critical thinking. That's dangerous

Nah, its pointing out words which seem to no longer have any meaning due to the 'woke' croud. Maybe at one time you would be right, but now words used for critical thinking are shut down by 'terf' and 'bigot', you seem to have it backwards

Ooh yes Sarah, “advanced biology” Grin Grin Grin

TalkingintheDark · 21/04/2019 13:47

Nice reminder, Skyz, 'invalidating' is another one.

Good catch, SpartacusAutisticus Grin

SarahTancredi · 21/04/2019 13:43

Oh oh oh can I add "advanced biology"

Freespeecher · 21/04/2019 13:41

I appreciate it's bad form to bump one's own thread, but the absolute kicker for me is the pause, as in "That's (wait two beats) problematic".

All the LOLs ever LOLed.

WeRiseUp · 21/04/2019 13:37

I love this thread. Other words I have come to detest are:

Nuance
Folk
Pronoun
Identity
Agency
Choice
Bigot
Phobic
Authentic

Because "You are valid" seems like the most insipid statement of human worth I can imagine. "You are worth about the same as a useful bus ticket" isn't really something I'd appreciate someone giving me as an affirming phrase

Loving that sentiment Floral.

FloralBunting · 21/04/2019 13:18

Any word can be used to shut down critical thinking. But I'm not a fan of relinquishing words so that they become the sole property of the controlling types.

I still use folk, problematic, chaotic, inclusive etc. Just not as jargon. I do only tend to use valid and invalidate in connection with tickets and passes, though. Because "You are valid" seems like the most insipid statement of human worth I can imagine. "You are worth about the same as a useful bus ticket" isn't really something I'd appreciate someone giving me as an affirming phrase.

Victoriapestis01 · 21/04/2019 13:09

Problematic is a way of indicating dislike of another persons views or actions, without bothering to consider and state what you dislike, why, how legitimate your dislike is, and what the consequences of it should be in terms of restrictions on the other person’s freedom of speech and action.

It’s exactly the sort of crap that is used by a dictatorship trying to discourage freedom of thought and expression without using violence. It should be questioned whenever we encounter it.

Whatisthisfuckery · 21/04/2019 13:04

Oh, and I forgot ‘questioning their/our right to exist.’

Translation: Pointing out that humans cannot change sex.

Victoriapestis01 · 21/04/2019 13:04

No, this thread is pointing out words that are used to avoid critical thinking.

It’s the avoidance of critical thinking that is dangerous, not the calling it out!

terryleather · 21/04/2019 13:01

invalidating words which are used for critical thinking

Nah mate, most of the words and phrases used by the woke stamp out any critical thinking rather than encourage it.

How else might the untruth "TWAW" come to be accepted?

Whatisthisfuckery · 21/04/2019 12:57

No, it’s pointing out words that ideologues use to invalidate other people’s critical thinking while trying to gaslight us that they’re not. HTH.

Of course it’s your right to xxxxxxxxx, but...

Translation, you have no right to xxxxxxxxxx if your choices do not match my woke requirements.

3dogs2cats · 21/04/2019 11:32

Valid

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 21/04/2019 11:25

We civil servants love the words "problematic" and "chaotic" (see also "complex") because they make ministerial briefings sound well written, particularly in relation to academy trusts Grin
