All-males college excludes TW. And they don't like it up 'em!

Oh this is just gold! Grin

"Morehouse College, the only all-male historically black college in the US, announced that it would begin admitting transgender men next year in a new policy that the college’s board of trustees approved on Saturday. While non-binary and gender non-conforming students will be eligible for admission, trans women will not be, and students who transition or begin to self-identify as female during their tenure at Morehouse will not be eligible to receive a degree from the college."

And guess who is spitting feathers about their innate womanly essence now not being manly enough, that it is "violent" against them, and that they will be "antagonized and expunged"?

But yes, interesting question for the TRAs to address with consistency and logic.

The only question there ever is for TRAs, is: "Does this benefit me above others?"
If the answer is "no", then it is violence/unfair/transphobic.

Consistency and logic need not apply.

It'll be interesting to see if women-only colleges now start to refuse to accept transmen on this basis, because a transman is surely at risk in a male-only environment because of their biology.

DodoPatrol · 15/04/2019 10:16

I think their decision is wrong, for the same reason that I think admitting male people to all-female facilities is wrong.

But yes, interesting question for the TRAs to address with consistency and logic.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 15/04/2019 10:12

I dunno

Presumably this college is single sex to combat specific oppressions faced by black men

Because we’re all pretending lady brain is a thing now, some black men will be prevented from accessing this college (admittedly by dint of their own choices)

This does not feel like a win to me

FannyCann · 15/04/2019 10:06

Could be a very cunning plan by somebody GC,

It would be nice to think so but I suspect they have simply decided well the rules are gender so that's what we're doing after all female colleges are now forced to accept trans women (do they accept trans men I wonder?). I doubt the thought processes have moved on to the logical conclusion but it will be very entertaining to see this one played out in court. Popcorn all round. Buckets of it. Grin

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 15/04/2019 10:06

To be clear, while a certain amount of schadenfreude is inevitable, if you believe in single sex spaces, then the college’s decision is not a good one and panders to stereotypes

Theredjellybean · 15/04/2019 09:59

Well I am cheering on Morehouse...
They are a male only college. So that is males.. Either biological males or self id males.. No women.. Biological ones or self id ones.
Its really not difficult to understand and I can't see any violence or threats in that policy.
If you feelz female then go to a unisex college or a female college.. After all that's what you want.. To be treated like a real woman.
So as a biological woman I would not expect to be admitted to a male only college so if you are a trans woman you can't either... The phrase tough tits springs to mind

BettyDuMonde · 15/04/2019 09:50

Stuff that benefits transwomen often puts transmen at a disadvantage if the two groups are treated equally (prisons are the scariest prospect, but sports are another obvious example).

And now we finally see a policy change that benefits transmen instead of transwomen and TRAs are protesting against it.

How the world can’t see that trans rights activism only flows in the direction of penis-people is beyond me.

Butterymuffin · 15/04/2019 09:44

Oh the irony.

So basically it's 'violence' to exclude trans women from anything ever? But not so for biological women?

CalleighDoodle · 15/04/2019 09:37

And both men and women should be allowed to experiment with different styles (makeup, clothes etc) without risking their education.

this confused me. is this what makes someone a man or a woman?

Ereshkigal · 15/04/2019 09:36

She said she believed the policy would not affect her ability to graduate because she was "grandfathered in" before the policy would be fully implemented.

I'm surprised First Ever Female Graduate Tatiana didn't change it to "grandmothered".

Ereshkigal · 15/04/2019 09:33

Good point. If these stunning and brave folx want to crowdfund for the court case to prove TWAM I'll certainly bung them a few quid.

rosablue · 15/04/2019 09:30

Could be a very cunning plan by somebody GC, goliven that past experience has seen TW be the most demanding about what they want at the expense of everyone else...

By saying the college is staying male and defining by gender rather than sex, which is what you would have thought trans individuals would have wanted, if a TW wants to go to the college then they would have to be the ones to take them to court to argue that TW are men, which could then cause ripples and legal headaches for all the other legislation that is based on accepting TW can say they are women and use female loos/changing rooms/etc... and best of all it would have come from a TW so others couldn’t complain that it was some nasty mean transphobic person that had done this...

The college gets to be seen as woke and inclusive because they are going down the gender route while causing the TW to shoot themselves in the foot - brilliant Grin

TimeLady · 15/04/2019 09:28

I think the college are calling out the bullshit in a deliciously passive aggressive way.

Ereshkigal · 15/04/2019 09:26

As soon as it looks as though something might exclude them - perish the very thought! - they start saying femmes not women.

Painfully, painfully transparent.

Indeed.

Needmoresleep · 15/04/2019 09:26

My understanding (I am not American) is that:

  1. Black men are one of the the US's most under-performing group.
  2. Morehouse College has a fantastic reputation.
  3. A male black college may provide a better educational environment for some some black men, than being in a minority at, say, an Ivy. (I worked in Manhatten in the 80's and my friendship group included Canadians, Kiwis, and several successful black Ivy-educated Americans, who curiously seemed to consider themselves as much outsiders from the American mainstream as we did. I don't know if things have changed.)

Are TW actually wanting to blast a hole through Morehouse College's successful educational formula for a disadvantaged group simply because it suits them. In the same way that they seem willing to blast holes through protections for vulnerable women and children.

Seemingly TWAW except when they are not.

HashtagLurky · 15/04/2019 09:23

This is delicious.

LangCleg · 15/04/2019 09:20

LOLs!

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 15/04/2019 09:14

I did one big, not very lady-like snort reading that. Perhaps I could now be admitted to the college.

BuzzPeakWankBobbly · 15/04/2019 09:11

It's exclusive by definition!

Yup, classic case of "literal violence" right there.
Handmaidens, assemble! They have a job for you....

OP posts:
deydododatdodontdeydo · 15/04/2019 09:06

You can't exclude them if you want to have a college that really is inclusive and welcoming.

A single sex (or gender) college doesn't want to be inclusive though!
It's exclusive by definition!

Needmoresleep · 15/04/2019 09:03

Its a logical conclusion surely.

They wanted to stay all-male. Because of the cultural climate they knew they would have problems refusing trans-men. If they accepted TWAW, it would be illogical to refuse other women.

Ergo a decision not to allow one group the ability to have their cake and eat it.

Not least it saves them the pain of having to work out what to do with TW athletes who would easily qualify for a women's team but not a mens. (My understanding is that colleges are under a legal obligation to provide equality in terms of access to sport.)

Oliversmumsarmy · 15/04/2019 08:58

But surely if a man is a woman and wants to be treated as a woman then they can’t go to an all male college.

You can’t say you are female and want to be treated as a female then say you are male when it suits.

Doesn’t that just mean you are still male and you can’t change your sex. Which isn’t that the whole point that trans men and women have been arguing they can do.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 15/04/2019 08:46

Ha ha. Bernard

It is indeed a college for manly gendered people. In order for them to be all manly together.

BuzzPeakWankBobbly · 15/04/2019 08:44

what’s important to them is an absence of stereotypically feminine behaviour, so lots of beards, deep voices, manly stiff upper lips and so on

We've seen this before.
