Here’s the details...

Sat, 11 May 2019
12:30 – 14:45 BST
Location

Central London
London

Description
The very worst of Lesbian erasure is upon us as our society embraces the mutilation of young lesbian bodies with chemicals and surgeries. How did we get here and how can we stop it?
Our panel is chaired by
Anne Ruzlyo, an Ex prison officer

Our panellists are:
Sheila Jeffreys: a lesbian feminist writer and activist. She taught sexual politics at the University of Melbourne, where she is now a professorial fellow, before retiring to the UK in 2015. She is the author of 10 books, and her latest is The Lesbian Revolution: lesbian feminism in the UK 1970-1990, 2018.
Julia Long: a lesbian - one of the old-fashioned kinds that doesn’t have a penis. She has worked in education, local government, academia and the women’s sector, and is currently a researcher in the field of male violence against women. Julia is a long-time Lesbian Feminist activist and her book Anti-Porn: The Resurgence of Anti-Pornography Feminism was published in 2012 by Zed Books. She is currently writing a book on how men have managed to convince so many people – including most ‘gender critical feminists’ - that there is such a thing as ‘transgenderism’. Julia has the great good fortune to live in Lesbian Feminist community and wants all women to know that this is possible. Her hobbies include sitting on chairs, eating pizza and naming men as men.
Dovile Lapinskaite: graduate in politics, philosophy and history of art, lesbian radical feminist, activist and independent artists.
Julia Beck: a writer and organizer from Baltimore, Maryland. She helps produce a monthly radio broadcast for Women's Liberation Radio News. Last year, she represented lesbians at Baltimore Pride and on the Law and Policy Committee of Baltimore City's LGBTQ Commission. She is currently at the fore of the fight for women's rights in the USA.
There will be a bounty of merchandise to purchase, please bring cash.
We will be live streaming on Posie Parker Youtube channel.
The venue supply unlimited water and will be announced a few hours before the event.
If you are experiencing financial difficulties please contact [email protected] and we may be able to offer a reduced ticket price.

Tbh I’m not a big fan of men in my feminism so I kind of agree to a point with people who prefer not!
But on the other hand- dh is an ally and education and information is for everyone.

plus he’ll buy my pints

OhHolyJesus · 07/05/2019 13:59

I'll be there. I'm not a man or a lesbian and I encourage your DH Beer to attend. I'm really looking forward to it (even if I am a bit scared about getting lynched en route for wearing my AHF t shirt!)

SwearyPoppins · 07/05/2019 13:58

Email the organisers, Beer. Most of these events have a smattering of men at them. Some attendees find it irritating, others don't care. I suspect the larger group are in the don't care camp.

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 07/05/2019 13:53

Ok, so I have two tickets ... but my friend has dropped out and dh has asked if he can replace her.....

What’s the etiquette? And will he be the only penis owning person in the room?

ChickenonaMug · 07/04/2019 11:05

I also went to the Barnstaple one. It was so good. I spent a good couple of hours afterwards, in a small group, talking with Julia Long. She is brilliant, caring, funny and very woman-focused. I would have loved to come to this event.

OrchidInTheSun · 07/04/2019 10:18

The speaker are all lesbians- the attendees don't have to be Smile

I've got my ticket

I've just spoken to a friend who thinks this is 'just hilarious'. She came across the event by accident, she was trawling for something else.

Standing for Women hosts Lesbians on Chairs - OMG that's so funny!

I think she thought she was the only one who saw the irony, that it was totally unintended, that the little women organisers were so cute!

Well she knows MUCH more now, I am afraid I had a little rant and unWoke her a little bit.

So, my thanks to anyone who contributed to the various GC for Beginners threads. She has a lot of catching up to do. I have high hopes of her, eventually Smile

hipsterfun · 07/04/2019 02:27

I’m not a lesbian either. My motivation is to better understand the lesbian perspective in order to try to help push back when I can.

But if it’s meant to be a lesbian event, I daresay I’ll bravely battle through my straight-gal hurtyfeelz Grin

HermioneWeasley · 07/04/2019 00:58

They should hold it at the Accenture offices. I am FURIOUS with them for having Julia Long removed by the fucking police. I shall refuse to attend any meetings with them in the future

Tunt · 07/04/2019 00:49

I’m not a lesbian, although I love sitting on chairs.... is this an event a straight GC woman can go to or is it really more for lesbians?

Thanks, MsJP, just seemed low profile so I wanted to check back.

Tbf, SAAHF, all you’ve said on this thread is ‘Fabulous’, but I’m happy if you know it’s real Smile

Hipsterfun - I went to one they did in Barnstaple, N Devon and was a bit worried for similar reasons - I couldn't find it mentioned anywhere apart from the booking site and Barnstaple seemed a bit random etc but it was all fine (and totally worth it)

MsJeminaPuddleduck · 06/04/2019 20:07

This sounds great too and would love to hear from Julia Long so soon after the Accenture fiasco on her take and what's happened since

hipsterfun · 06/04/2019 20:03

Thanks, but I meant other than on the booking website Grin

Ticket bought. 😁

Callmejudith · 04/04/2019 14:04

Ticket booked!

GlorianaCervixia · 04/04/2019 04:16

I didn’t know Julia Long is writing a book. I hope she has a publisher for it because that would be an auto buy for me. I think she’s fantastic at laying out arguments in a cool-headed way.

GeordieGenes · 03/04/2019 23:03

What treats do you get with the £25 ticket?
