'The thought of stepping into such a highly gendered space where someone could potentially target me because of certain physical features of mine is terrifying.'

Well, that's rich!

And as the great philosopher Jagger once said 'you can't always get what you want'.

The issue they're not talking about wrt swimming has to do with the swimming costume. Unfortunately, for a male who wears clothing cut for female bodies, most swimming costumes cut for women have no room to accommodate male genitalia. There is no possible way for a male to wear, say, a bikini bottom, without the difference between sex and gender made acutely clear to all observers. In similar articles I've read, THIS is the greater dilemma for TW.

They of course could wear the costumes fashioned for the modest, with skirted bottoms with hemline just above the knees, but for some reason no one ever thinks of that unsexy alternative.

Yes, Pot - "mothering Sunday, curds and wey, Palm Sunday, Easter Day" - it counts back from Easter, rather than forward from Shrove Tuesday (not that that makes any difference ultimately: Shrove Tuesday + 40 days for Lent lands you up on Palm Sunday).

Potplant2 · 31/03/2019 16:47

To be a total pedant, Mothering Sunday isn’t the last Sunday in Lent, it’s always the fourth (out of six). Lent lasts until Easter Sunday. It’s true that from next Sunday (fifth in Lent) the season is sometimes called Passiontide, but this is a deepening of Lent not an ending to it.

It’s certainly the case, however, that 31 July being both Mothering Sunday and Transgender Day of Visibility this year is a coincidence. Like all dates to do with Lent and Easter, Mothering Sunday will be on a different day every year.

"Comments on this piece are premoderated to ensure discussion remains on topics raised by the writer. "

do they honestly think anyone believes that?

GCAcademic · 31/03/2019 16:34

I’ve reported the TERF comments as hate speech.

The comments amply demonstrate that men don’t have a clue the level of harassment that women endure from males. Despite the fact that they’re the ones dishing it out.

GrumpyGran8 · 31/03/2019 16:31

I'm just really annoyed that Mothering Sunday is the chosen 'Transgender day of visibility '. It's been Mothering Sunday for 700 years. Pick another day
March 31st was chosen for TDV several years ago; Mothering Sunday (in the UK) is the last Sunday of Lent which is different every year. So it's just a coincidence this year.
But apart from that, I completely agree that Owl is complaining a bit too much - why can't they just find a swimming pool with private changing rooms?

magicmole - they've just closed the comments again, although I managed to get one in before that!

GeordieGenes · 31/03/2019 16:29

It sounds mad, but the Daily Mail would not publish this shite without a quote from the other side of the debate. They would also let all comments stand.

It's funny how things have turned out Shock

And yes, all the swimming pools in my town have mixed sex spaces with cubicles and lockers. Plus open showers by the pool, then small single-sex shower and change areas.

Admittedly, you can't use soap in the open showers, and in this v unwoke area I think an obvious bio male would be challenged if they tried to use the women's.

But it would be perfectly possible to swim and change discreetly. It's almost as if the aim is to use the women's space, not to actually swim...

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 31/03/2019 16:18

The Guardian is such BS Angry

teawamutu · 31/03/2019 16:15

I'm SO glad I stopped funding this tosh.

They never did reply when I wrote to explain why...

zanahoria · 31/03/2019 16:05

interesting which comments get the Guardian approced tick

" So it's good to see Owl writing here today and I hope that we get to see more of this, across all parts of the media"

RHTawneyonabus · 31/03/2019 15:56

I just don’t get why this person can’t swim. I’m hard pressed to think of a swimming pool near us without a family changing village type arrangement with male/famale changing at either end it would be easy enough to use a single cubicle

Knicknackpaddyflak · 31/03/2019 15:46

No eye rolls big enough for the Woke Comments. Several 'oh gosh Ts are so meeeeeeeeeeeean'. (Bravo Guardian, hosting that particular slur.) And one that made me laugh out loud, saying they don't get why ts have a problem, TRAs are all about inclusion.

Except of course for women with disabilities, faiths, cultures, beliefs, sexual orientations, personal boundaries and opinions that involve saying no to men. Male supremacists in action.

zanahoria · 31/03/2019 15:35

so Owl has never been to a UK swimming pool but has written in article in the Guardian moaning about them?

KatvonHostileExtremist · 31/03/2019 15:24

The picture was truly ridiculous. Honestly grow the fuck up owl

KatvonHostileExtremist · 31/03/2019 15:23

Happy Mothers Day everyone Flowers

MenuPlant · 31/03/2019 15:06

How many women go swimming with a pink childs flotation aid?

Does this person ID not as a woman but a girl???

Or are women childlike??? (Misogyny)

MenuPlant · 31/03/2019 15:06

Look at the pic

Wearing a childs flotation aid
Which is pink with a unicorn on it
Studying nails

teawamutu · 31/03/2019 14:58

'certain physical features of mine'.

Great euphemism.

MenuPlant · 31/03/2019 14:50

I would like a single sex session so I don't have to contend with aggressive men in the lanes (public space is mens space after all and women get in the way)

They don't have any at ours

Loads of women go though and things like water aerobics are 100% women

MenuPlant · 31/03/2019 14:48

ah just realised from other thread that mothers day moves around the place so it wasn't deliberate.

magicmole · 31/03/2019 14:43

fyi they've just opened comments on this article. Pre-moderated of course but still a surprise.

feelingverylazytoday · 31/03/2019 14:40

*I know very few women who will go swimming because of the immense pressure on women to be slim, blemish free, hair free, "perfect 10"
Really? I swim nearly every day, and there's usually way more women than men in the pool. Plenty of women in the gym as well.
Women go swimming as long as they feel safe in changing room and pool. Some do put make up on and do their hair with the dryer afterwards, but most people don't seem to bother. I don't, and the only pressure I feel to be slim is for health reasons.

MenuPlant · 31/03/2019 14:36

YY I know originally it's about the church but most people these days see it as about mums.
