Apparently telling women to 'die in a grease fire' is hate speech. Who knew?

Have a great weekend everyone!!

Not exactly the same thing, I suppose, but at very least a peculiar choice of words.

Tbh, I find the needlessly emotive language about 'refugees' more grating than the DIAF bit, but she definitely chose her words very carefully.

nauticant · 30/03/2019 17:39

I found that so difficult to believe that I went searching and found this:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/a3431422--BristolUniWomen-Shami-Chakrabarti-event-tonight?msgid=82875417

I am appalled. It's just, well, words fail.

Ereshkigal · 30/03/2019 17:34

I'm going to say that it's not possible to migrate to the female sex from the male, Shami dear. And if I did happen to die in a fire because of that reality-based view then it's reasonably likely that I've been murdered by unhinged misogynists.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 30/03/2019 17:33

Shami Chakrabarti is a disappointment and an utter disgrace.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/03/2019 17:32

'Refugee'Hmm...wonder how she feels about colonisers?

Ereshkigal · 30/03/2019 17:31

Yes I remember.

ThePurportedDoctoress · 30/03/2019 17:29

Shami said:
"I don't want to police the borders between these segregated sexes and I'm not going to say to any refugee or migrant to my sex that you don't belong over here. And you know what, if you lock the house too tightly, you might just die in the fire."
She said the last bit in a very deliberate manner. I can't find the video, but that's verbatim.

FermatsTheorem · 30/03/2019 17:18

Shami Chakrabarti used it Shock

I mean, I know I lost all respect for her when she did that dreadful cover-up job on anti semitism in the labour party, so I suppose I should know the depths she's capable of plumbing. But I'm still shocked that she would use DIAF unironically of other women...

To think 20 years ago she was one of my heroes.

ThePurportedDoctoress · 30/03/2019 17:11

No, 'die in a fire' is not an 'idiom'. Or if you're associating with people who think it's an ok idiom, then you have a problem...

Shami Chakrabarti used it when she commented on women who object to males using women's facilities. And no, she didn't take our side.

LangCleg · 30/03/2019 17:03

Urban Dictionary says it came from gaming (Magic: The Gathering)...

... don't tell Glinner! He'll mention Gamergate and send Rachel into another furious paroxysm!

It's a thing that happens, deliberately, to women. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bride_burning

Its not an 'idiom' any feminist could possibly use, surely?AngrySad

LizzieSiddal · 30/03/2019 16:29

They get more power? To do what exactly I wonder.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 30/03/2019 16:25

Are they auditioning for panto this year?

Just a case of a different public stage really.

Because having a whole 8,000 twitter followers, most of them young transpeople with no money or sense, means ‘power’ in Mckinnons La La Land fantasy world Hmm

Ereshkigal · 30/03/2019 16:06

Die in a fire is not an "idiom". Especially when you start giving details about which type of fire you're thinking about.

When male people tell women who have opinions they disapprove of to die in a fire, that is assuredly "punching down".

KatvonHostileExtremist · 30/03/2019 15:59

I'm seeing them stroking a white cat while laughing maniacally.

Are they auditioning for panto this year?

Apropos of absolutely nothing at all, I keep imagining a Sandy Draws Badly cartoon in which the wheels of a bike are reproductions of the Duluth Model.

Thanks, Lymphy. With regard to RM getting tenure, this post is interesting from RM's twitter. A mention of accommodations for disability, followed by:

Yep, and I'm dealing with a workplace that has granted accommodations and then is holding it against me in my tenure case. Awesome. ...they're in so much shit. 4:10 pm - 27 Jan 2019

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 30/03/2019 14:46

Ok. So what have we learned about who has power and who doesn't, and so is oppressed?

I think they may have changed the meaning of 'oppressed'. I can't think who is expecting labour from male transpeople, (although i see lots of heavy lifting expected from transmen) and with the ear of politicians, public services providers and the media, I can't see how their voices arent heard or their wants accommodated.

Datun · 30/03/2019 14:01

Kiwi farms yes.

Analysts, yes. Feminists? Nooo. 🤣

Knicknackpaddyflak · 30/03/2019 14:00

Ah. So Twitter bans women for pointing out reality but trans people can make violent death threats and demonstrate psychotic violent fantasies and that's all just fine.

Ok. So what have we learned about who has power and who doesn't, and so is oppressed? And about this 'most oppressed in all the world ever' thing constantly being chanted and waved around as one of a number of delusional mantras in an attempt to brain wash people out of reality?

I agree. Hand McKinnon a megaphone and let the insanity roll.

Sexnotgender · 30/03/2019 13:26

I’m guessing kiwi farms?

spottyswat · 30/03/2019 13:22

Who are the kiwis?

Sexnotgender · 30/03/2019 13:21

No way would I send my child to whatever university gave that loon tenure.

Ereshkigal · 30/03/2019 13:06

Add you've got to hand it to those kiwis. They said this would happen, they predicted every single stage.

They always see it.
