Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

If Glinner is such an 'ally' why is he working only with white men?

I'm a GC feminist, but I do find all the fawning around Graham Linehan to be pathetic. He's barely given a peep about women's rights in the past, and suddenly he's jumped on the anti-TRA bandwagon, centering himself in what is and should a women-led movement (i.e. feminism).
The last straw for me is seeing fellow feminists fawn over this tweet - he posits himself as an ally, yet shows 0 interest in opening up the world of comedy beyond the thoughts of white men.

A heterosexual man being critical of transgenderism =! feminism

I had no idea who Glinner was before I joined this board and no idea who Graham Lineham was or many of the other names mentioned I was not living in UK-Ireland culture until a year ago. But I did bingewatch Black Books many years ago on the recommendation of a friend and loved it! My son in law has recommended Father Ted as well but I'm not sure how or where -- box set?

Melroses · 29/03/2019 17:02

I love black books Grin especially when Fran is learning the piano and Manny is hanging upside down hitting the strings with a knife and fork so that the piano teacher cannot tell that she hasn't practiced. And all the rest.

Carriemac · 29/03/2019 16:51

I really fancy a custard cream, or maybe a bourbon .
While watching black books

Lamaha · 29/03/2019 16:49

And is not a feminist. Being gender critical doesn't make you a feminist.

People like the OP are the reason I've always hesitated to wear the badge feminist despite, or perhaps because of, being raised by a hard core feminist in the 50's and 60's. When feminism becomes an agenda of "must believe" and "must do" and "must not" do in order to wear the badge, then I'm out. I've always gone gladly against the usual dogma, including being a SAHM. I don't care who points a finger. I'm also lucky enough to know lots of wonderful white males of the gentler, supportive sort supportive not of an agenda, but of the basic caring and compassion that comes from a healthy psyche rather than a political stance.
I'm fairly new to this forum and new to Glinner but what I've seen of him is top notch.

Howyoualldoworkme · 29/03/2019 16:45

Plinytheprettier Lots of conservative women work really hard in this fight and appreciate the work Graham does even though we're not politically aligned with him.
I suppose in your world we're not feminists either? Like Jennifer James who didn't want our 'dirty money'?

birdsdestiny · 29/03/2019 16:25

Absolutely glinner needs to campaign on issues that challenge his own privilege. Being constantly threatened, visited by the police, etc etc, this issue has had no effect on his life at all.
Can I ask op why you think Jordan Peterson is any more a danger to feminism than say the lib dems, the Labour party, etc who are taking a wrecking ball to the safeguarding of women and children. I assume you would be happy to 'ally' as you put it with some of them. Those in the lib dems for example have behaved in an appalling way towards women but I am happy to agree with them on Brexit. You are going to be on an island of one if you only agree with people who agree with you on everything.

Datun · 29/03/2019 16:25

The OP has started a thread on mumsnet to blame women for a man on Twitter not being sufficiently cognisant of his male privilege.

(Despite him standing up for those women to the tune of 30 grand and considerable negative impact to himself and family).

Now where have we heard all this before?

Sitdownstandup · 29/03/2019 16:16

The OPs posts are very bemusing.

Also ''I would love to see him doing more campaigns on feminist issues in a way that challenges his own privilege.''.

Liberal politics demands a level of submissiveness and subservience from others that makes me want to boak.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 29/03/2019 16:08

nauticant you’re right, it is very lib-fem

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 29/03/2019 16:07

As Datun said, you are being viewed with suspicion. Your use of the phrase anti-TRA feminist movement has me rubbing my chin. Because feminism isn't anti-trans, it's pro women.

Oh good point...

nauticant · 29/03/2019 16:06

All this "checking of privilege" and obsession with a person committing the crime of "associating with white men" is giving me a vibe of lib-fem TRA and/or North American.

I don't know for sure if pliny is bloke.

But they want us to stop supporting a man who is helping women no end. They want him to check his privilege, even after he has been doxxed, his wife has been doxxed, her business has been targeted, he's got cancer and he's down to the tune of nearly 30 grand.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 29/03/2019 16:00

Glinner is not as much of an ally as he presents himself and perhaps he should be centered less within the context of the anti-TRA feminist movement.

As Datun said, you are being viewed with suspicion. Your use of the phrase anti-TRA feminist movement has me rubbing my chin. Because feminism isn't anti-trans, it's pro women.

I find myself wondering why you used that particular phrase. And why you seem unconvinced by your own thread and arguments.

nauticant · 29/03/2019 16:00

OP: do you actually know anything about Graham Linehan? Beyond him appearing in photos with white men and being approved of, to some degree, by some gender critical women?

People are welcome to disagree with me if they wish but I'm also entitled to my opinion

Your opinion is that women shouldn't support Glinner. But you haven't said why.

Other than he's a man.

Your opinion is he shouldn't be centred in feminism. He isn't.

Your opinion is he should 'check his privilege' - how that's anything to do with us, God only knows.

You don't like him, you want us to do something about it, but you won't say what.

Your 'opinion' is pants.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 29/03/2019 15:50

Jessica did I say 'the Mumsnet feminism board'? And I'm certainly not apologising to you. You've been aggressive and dismissive from the start.

Well there is a whole thread of support for him here, why post it here? Who were you talking about? YOU have been rude and patronising from your OP, I will not be nice to someone who refers to women supporting a man speaking out on this issue as ‘pathetic’. It doesn’t matter which women you’re referring to, you shouldn’t be saying it about anyone just because they support him.

You start a post calling other women pathetic for showing support to a man speaking out on an issue we all care about, in a feminist board and have the absolute nerve to call others aggressive.

Plinytheprettier · 29/03/2019 15:50

Ok Datun that makes sense. But I actually came to this conclusion after seeing a tweet from another woman (who was making the point I've made). I'm hardly alone in this view and it doesnt meant make me a TRA (or a man as Jacky seems to think).

People are welcome to disagree with me if they wish but I'm also entitled to my opinion

Datun · 29/03/2019 15:47

The other thing you may not be aware of Pliny, is that transactivists routinely try and get feminists to turn on Glinner. He is a thorn in their side, a major one, and they are desperate for him to lose support.

That should tell you everything you need to know about how effective he is, and why you are viewed with suspicion.
