‘I have a handbag therefore I am a woman’

I’m not sure what the rules are here on posting screenshots of tweets, but I have just read the most INFURIATING thread on twitter where a talks about a gold lame handbag and red lipstick and how it marks them out as so CLEARLY a woman and stops misgendering and dysphoria. Great for them.

But, despite a veneer of gender fluidity and breaking down of stereotypes, why oh why oh WHY are we stating that femininity = female?! It’s utterly bonkers! Am I, a cisgender heterosexual woman, not as much of a woman because I don’t wear red lipstick and carry a gold handbag?

I believe this is what they call ‘peak trans’? Count me on side - I can sit on the ‘oh but maybe we should just be kind’ fence no longer and should have trusted my gut from the beginning!

I've got a carpet bag like Mary Poppins.

The dark red medicine in it turns tits saggy.

(I just posted that on the Julia Long thread by accident.)

Gender is really interesting, my ex and I used to talk about it quite a bit, he sometimes wears make up, nail varnish, loves fashion and is gay, so some typically female traits, where as no one ever realises that I’m gay until i tell them, so two very different men apart from sexuality.

But we both discussed how we have no idea what makes us male, like, what makes us feel like men.

The only time I had it explained me and could relate was when a trans friend said when they looked in a mirror (even when they were young), they saw a guy looking back at them that they didn’t connect to, but when they see themselves now in a mirror they recognise that person as themself.

Identity is an odd thing, and it’s so different for everyone that it’s hard to rationalise.

I don't actually own a handbag. I had one at uni about 30 years ago but it got knocked from my room in halls. Only had rucksacks or briefcases (depending on work/home) or just pockets since then.
Oh dammit, must be a man Hmm

Yossarian22 · 23/03/2019 22:43

No handbag unless I’m at work but I do have curved credit cards from keeping them in my jeans pockets - still a woman 😀
As others have said, cis is unnecessary.

I have a briefcase on wheels! But I do wax my fanny? Where am I on the spectrum of gender?

Oh no it's ok! I checked my chromosomes I'm a female

Bookworm01 · 23/03/2019 22:22

Damn. I don't have a gold lamé handbag. Too garish for my taste. I have a Loungefly tote bag with Princess Leia on it, or a Kath Kidston flowery handbag, will that do? Am I less female for not having the gold one? Hmm

Yeah, c*sgender is a term bestowed on heterosexuals by "woke" TRAs because they think there is more than one sex. Bin it off as a label OP, you don't need it.

My dad used to have a manbag in the 70s (from France where in was rather common). Someone should have warned mum.

BarbieJellyBabyBrain · 23/03/2019 22:12

I have heard about the gold lame handbag before, who is it that said it?

It's fine to post twitter screenshots on here.

WeRiseUp · 23/03/2019 22:08

I do like the title of this thread. This bullshit all started with Descartes.

AssassinatedBeauty · 23/03/2019 21:56

Don't describe yourself as "cis", it's a capitulation to the appropriation.

BigFatGiant · 23/03/2019 21:53

I need to tell my dad to stop using his handbag so he doesn’t suffer the literal violence of being misgendered then Confused

Voice0fReason · 23/03/2019 21:53

As soon as I read the title I was going to ask if it was gold lame!
The thread was originally posted a while back and despite the fact that the stereotyping is annoying, it was hilarious to read. Complete delusion.
If you find stereotyping infuriation, I don't understand why you would describe yourself as cisgender - that is reinforcing the existence of gender stereotypes.

I have a rucksack and am still a woman. Oh gosh. What am I up to? Lack of make up-check; flat shoes-check; short(ish) hair- check. Omg I must be a man!! But no, I wear dresses and enjoy crochet. Phew, I am a woman and reality has not been fibbing to me.

BickerinBrattle · 23/03/2019 21:51

It gets even better — go to Feminist Current and search under this individual’s last name. You’ll discover an interesting tale of a male who proclaimed themselves a feminist ally, to the point of commanding a leadership voice in feminist media. And then women began to speak about their experiences with this person.....

It’s truly amazing how quickly a change of identity and wardrobe can rehabilitate.

Lomondstripe · 23/03/2019 21:35

Sorry, first paragraph should read ‘where a trans woman’, not sure how that disappeared!
