I hate the term. I hate to see women blithely reduce themselves to being a subset of women.

But I know I've read more reasons as to why it is not an ok term to use. So can you share your one liners or even two liners (they need to be simple enough that I can remember and re-use them).

Thanks!

Don’t call me Cis, Cis women are sycophantic phallocentrists.

WineGummyBear · 15/03/2019 21:47

Incidentally, the converse is also true. I don't identify with the male list either.

Sex is diamorphic. A person's sense of themself notsomich.

WineGummyBear · 15/03/2019 21:45

Someone telling me that i identify with oppressive sexist stereotypes?

How dare they tell me I'm willingly embracing my own oppression?

Datun · 15/03/2019 21:43

A) I'm not a subset of my own sex.

Or

B) Don't define me as something I'm not.

”If someone doesn't want to personally identify as cis-genderer then fair enough, everyone gets to pick their own labels. But in and of itself there's nothing bad about it.”

That would work if it weren’t for the fact that people who use the term ‘cis’ seem to think that every biological woman is ‘cis’, whether they identify as such or not.

Dothehappydance · 15/03/2019 21:29

Depending on who I would either say 'I don't like that term's or if it was someone superwoke do a head tilt and say 'Did you just presume my gender'

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

exculpatrix · 15/03/2019 21:25

Nothing wrong with it as a term, just like there's nothing wrong with trans as a term. If someone doesn't want to personally identify as cis-genderer then fair enough, everyone gets to pick their own labels. But in and of itself there's nothing bad about it.

ForgivenessIsDivine · 15/03/2019 21:19

I do not identify with gender stereotypes associated with my second therefore I am not cisfemale. To assume, as I do not appear to be trans, I must be cis is diminishing my being into a binary norm that I dispute. (Shamlessly paraphrased from another thread.)

ginandbearit · 15/03/2019 20:05

Because 'woman' is the primary factor, it is enough as it stands.More than enough .

Ereshkigal · 15/03/2019 19:58

I am a woman and I don't label myself a non-man. As a woman, I am a member of a marginalized, political, and protected class in a sex-based hierarchy that has existed for millennia and in which males are positioned at the higher level. Labelling me 'cis' is an attempt to paint women as oppressors of males. In no circumstances, however, do women have the legal, political, economic, or social power to exploit males as a class. Therefore the word 'cis' is a power-play to erase female oppression at the hands of male power and I refuse to acquiesce to that.

Great post, Bickering. Summed it up very well.

Ereshkigal · 15/03/2019 19:57

Wonderful, moving post, hooda Thanks

FemalePersonator · 15/03/2019 19:22

I'm not an isomer. I'm a woman, you know - adult human female.

ForgivenessIsDivine · 15/03/2019 19:22

@hoodathunkit Brave woman. Flowers

Thank you for sharing and making us proud and humbled to share chromosomes with you.

theOtherPamAyres · 15/03/2019 19:10

"Don't call me/us cis woman/women" (said in a firm, emphatic tone)

No justification needed
No explanation needed

Repeat, if necessary, or if asked why.

BickerinBrattle · 15/03/2019 19:06

I don't believe in transubstantiation. But I don't identify as non-Catholic. I don't believe in astrology, but I don't identify as non-Pisces.

I don't have a bipolar disorder, but I don't identity as non-bipolar. I'm not anorexic, but I don't identify as cis-weighty.

I don't believe that gender identity is innate anymore than I believe in an innate soul, therefore I can't assert an idenity that is founded on the existence of innate gender identity and to insist that I do so is religious persecution.

I do believe in variations in human personality but when I went through a period of introversion I didn't I identify as cis-extroverted, and vice-versa, since personality is of course fluid.

Flowers hoodathunkit I don't know if you identify as a poet, but I certainly read you as one. What you wrote was stunning in its beauty and truth.

Itwouldtakemuchmorethanthis · 15/03/2019 19:05

I think also that words carry more weight than their definition. For example you could replace the trans, in trans-woman and use pseudo-woman or faux-woman, but we recognise that these words are unkind and would hurt so use trans-woman in recognition of how it’s received. Even if “cis” was a subset of women (which is nonsensical) then surely one can see, even with very limited empathy, that it isn’t well received and not use it whatever you feel it’s shorthand for?

Purpleartichoke · 15/03/2019 18:55

I don’t identify with gender stereotypes, I use my amazing brain that happens to be housed in a female body to fight against them.

3timeslucky · 15/03/2019 18:50

I was doing great reading and nodding away (stopping for an "oof moment" at hoodathnkit's post (oof as in breath taken away)) and I got to KennDodd's and had to pause as I could not tell if it was a sarcastic "who could object to that?" I think that nicely captures how crazy and sometimes impossible communication has become. But I guess that's what happens when attempts are made to have language redefined and meaning erased.

Thanks all. Wanders off humming "they built cis city ..." Smile

@horsewithnogender, that's funny and shows how ridiculous the whole nonsense is.

GrinitchSpinach · 15/03/2019 16:44

built cis city on sexist roles

rofl! thanks a lot for the ear worm...

DpWm · 15/03/2019 16:43

Ultimately what it comes down to is, if on the one hand we have trans women and on the other hand we have cis women, what exactly is a woman?

HollowTalk · 15/03/2019 16:38

Why is it only women who are not allowed to object to the language used to describe them?

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/03/2019 16:37

Because, although I perform gender stereotypes because it's easier, I'm not willing to pretend I like them. They are imposed from outside and fuck that noise.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 15/03/2019 16:35

Because they built cis city on sexist roles? Wink

flowery · 15/03/2019 16:35

‘Cis’ is redundant. It adds nothing. A woman is an adult human female, regardless of whether the person in question identifies with/conforms to gender stereotypes or not.
