Its quite believable these people had no knowledge of the Challenor case, highly unlikely it would have been talked about locally, so much else to deal with. I know many in the local party I was in had and have no idea.

It also seems to be a common and systemic failing in many organisations in general. The attack on safeguarding is often driven by TRAs but the leadership is enabling it

At the heart of so many systemic Safeguarding failings is the infringement of 'consent'.
The legal frameworks re sexual assaults & Safeguarding policies based on consent followed from the criminalising of rape within marriage:

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 15/03/2019 12:06

The Veritas report was clear that Aimee Challenor does not understand Safeguarding.
This is a common and systemic failing amongst transactivists.

Update 28 Aug 2018

A statement by Coventry Pride following David Challenor’s conviction clarified his involvement and states:

“The Trustees were made aware of criminal proceedings being taken against Mr Challenor in November 2016. A directive was issued to those responsible for volunteer recruitment that Mr Challenor was not to be accepted as a volunteer at the Charity’s events and if he attended public events organised by the Charity he was monitored by the trustees.”

As a trustee of Coventry Pride in both 2016 and 2017, Aimee Challenor was therefore party to the offences David Challenor had been charged with, seemingly in conflict with the statement issued the previous day saying “I did not know about the full details of the crimes” and the day before being ““unaware of the crimes”. Nevertheless Aimee’s own blog reveals that David Challenor attended a Coventry Pride event in June 2017 as a photo credit on the site is attributed to “Baloo Challenor” when Aimee was well aware of the directive issued.

It remains to be seen how Coventry Pride were made aware of the criminal proceedings but the Green Party apparently were not until sentencing in August 2018. Or, for that matter, why none of the Coventry Pride trustees could have notified the Green Party of concerns using safeguarding procedures.

Update 31 August

Aimee Challenor was finally suspended from the Green Party five days after The Sunday Times published the article noting that David Challenor was employed as Aimee’s election agent after having been charged with appalling sexual offences against a ten year old girl. In the first line of the statement the suspension is described as being on a “no fault basis” and that “a number of complaints […] have been made against her.”

The statement is in stark contrast to how the Green Party announced the suspension of Olivia Palmer (the Green Party general election candidate for Esher and Walton in 2017) for ‘misgendering’ a male who identifies as a trans woman. No mention of a no fault basis or due process. (h/t @ SwearyGodmother)" (continues)

It only took a little digging...which is what basic safeguarding should be.

This is what concerns me the most.

About this, about all the threads on mn. It only takes a little digging to reveal major safeguarding issues and also a range of other issues that as the sum of a whole are concerning.

R0wantrees · 15/03/2019 11:56

There is plenty of evidence that AC poses an highly probable ongoing risk, so the LibDems better think on. It only took a little digging...which is what basic safeguarding should be.

This represents a serious Safeguarding risk.

Ereshkigal · 15/03/2019 11:49

Sian Berry deleted all her supportive tweets to AC the day before she became co leader. A Twitter account dedicated to showing the deleted tweets of mayoral candidates (she was GP London mayoral candidate) revealed this.

Isca18 · 15/03/2019 11:33

Andy Healey and others have been going on about lack of safeguarding for years, (to the top people in the Green Party), all ignored and people ostracised and bullied for doing so.
In Andy's case the top-drawer knew about it and instead chose to actively side with AC in the pursuit of legal action and getting him suspended. They knew about the terfblocker and did nothing. They knew about the misogynist environs e.g. Richard Firth being instrumental in blocking WPUK meeting in Leeds and his "I love the taste of TERFs salty tears". He's still there, misogynist as ever, posting all over the place. They never learn.
AC had already been reprimanded for abusive language and was still feted and enabled to rise to candidature. These enablers and feters are culpable; how convenient to blame just Hawkins & Phipps.
Liz Reason inherited a poison chalice, but the people I would be questioning are: Sian Berry, Amelia Womack & Caroline Lucas et al.

MillytantForceit · 15/03/2019 09:59

How does he explain only speaking out NOW?

Do you suppose being under oath had anything to do with it?

No £300 a day attendance allowance for disqualified perjurers.

Persifleur · 15/03/2019 07:50

I agree, RedToothbrush, his behaviour is inexcusable. Convenient place, the back of the mind.

RedToothBrush · 15/03/2019 07:45

Not defending Steel at all, but casting my mind back to the time in question the police were still held, in many quarters, in higher regard than they are now. Corporal punishment at a level we now find shocking was commonplace. As a child of the manse, Steel may well have concluded that if the police were taking no action there wasn't much to it.

And the 40 years since where he has maintained his silence even during an inquiry into Cyril Smith which was not too long ago?

How does he explain only speaking out NOW?

MillytantForceit · 15/03/2019 07:20

David Steel who became leader because of an unfortunate series of events involving his predecessor who definitely didn't try to have anyone murdered, except perhaps a dog.

Liberal Party?

AuntieCJ · 15/03/2019 06:03

Steel has a lot to answer for. The police have even more.

RedToothBrush · 14/03/2019 23:36

The inquiry was poorly set up. By one Theresa May.

I expect it to rumble on and ultimately collapse under its own weight and achieve the sum total of nothing.

littlbrowndog · 14/03/2019 23:30

So reading that article David Steele knew children were being abused and did fuck all

Fuck all.
Fuck all

LangCleg · 14/03/2019 23:17

How long will this inquiry last?

The remit is so broad and child abuse so widespread, forever, probably.

RedToothBrush · 14/03/2019 23:09

Steel.

That's the reputation of the LDs gone forever.

How do they shake this off?

NeurotrashWarrior · 14/03/2019 20:31

*savile fucking auto correct

NeurotrashWarrior · 14/03/2019 20:31

Bbc report on the saviour content of today's inquiry:

Savile: Knighthood committee 'told about abuse in 1998' www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-47576543

truthisarevolutionaryact · 14/03/2019 19:23

Funny how abusive men find such a comfortable home in politics and the civil service isn't it. It's almost as if they find their 'family' there. Confused

truthisarevolutionaryact · 14/03/2019 19:20

And finally the Lib Dems are creaking into action to suspend David Steel for failing to take action against Cyril Smith after his admissions that he knew about the abuse he inflicted on children.

NeurotrashWarrior · 14/03/2019 18:23

Is this a naive suggestion but can people who know more about this appalling covering up and denial of knowledge email the independent inquiry?

Watching the proceedings today, it was clear that emails and letters were being carefully kept, every i dotted and t crossed. Sunlight?
