British Gymnastics and lack of safeguarding for girls

You'd think that British gymnastics, having seen the catastrophic abuse of girls by Larry Nassar in the USA scandal, might be a bit more thoughtful about the safety of girls - but no:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6791187/Now-girl-gymnasts-share-changing-rooms-boys-identify-female.html

Ironically they now are allowing the wearing of shorts having ignored complaints that skimpy leotards are too revealing for girls. But now there is something they want to hide ......

Does this need to be cross-posted into the extra curricular activities thread where the 'gym mums' hand out?

I can imagine that it’s the floor exercises with the ribbon and balls that would be of more interest to such lads. All that dainty prancing (sorry to anyone who does this - I love dance, I love gymnastics but 2 sports I don’t ‘get’ one is this and the other is synchronised swimming).

Otherwise why not compete in the tumbling, bars, horse etc - I can’t say that most female disciplines are more or less ‘girly’ than the boys ones. And the girls will have been training for years on their apparatus - is it easy to switch from say doing the pallel bars to the beam?

Or is this purely males bullying their way into female arenas and expecting the girls and women to pretend they haven’t noticed?

yes, this all kicked off last summer / autumn, so I was wondering about the timing TimeLady, but that explains it

I actually think gymnastics is one sport where trans athletes won’t necessarily have an advantage. I wasn’t particularly good but I did gymnastics all through childhood and being bigger doesn’t particularly help and is if anything a hindrance in the female events.

Trans men would stand no chance at all in the men’s which is more heavily strength based.

Men and women both do floor but women’s has more of a dance element and is to music.

Both do the vault but I’ve bever particularly thought the men are any better at it but a more experienced gymnast than me may say otherwise.

Safeguarding is a separate issue, of course.

I suspect Sanchez Manning has been sitting on that article for some time, waiting for the right moment to publish. And then along came Martina....😁 Perfect timing.

Have British Gymnastics consulted their liability insurers? Are the coaches and volunteer chaperones indemnified? Have they been advised of their potential liability exposure in the event of a lawsuit for damages? All coaches and volunteers should require that British Gymnastics provide them documentation that they themselves are covered by British Gymnastics insurance policy, and therefore will be provided legal defence, in the event of a lawsuit.

Far too much cutesey wrist-flicking and arse-wiggling in women's floor for my liking.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 10/03/2019 08:49

I wonder whether the floor exercises are scored in the same way? Both sexes do those.

I doubt there will be many male-bodied candidates for the beam. (Ouch!)

In the vault however, the longer limbs etc will give a distinct advantage.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 10/03/2019 08:45

Now that's an interesting debate - how are female / male gymnastics competitions scored? How much does weight / strength feature in different activities?

The problem is it will just decimate the sport and affect women's and girls health negatively One mother in the article made the point she would no longer encourage her daughter in the sport 'for her own safety'.

Whether the boys are any good, is in many respects, beside the point here.

JellySlice · 10/03/2019 08:44

The ruling is not only misogynistic but also trans-exclusionary. If only biologically male competitors are allowed to wear shorts or tights, that will point out to everyone that the gymnasts competing in the female categories are not all girls or women.

Reminds me of Swim England's rule that TWs could wear bikinis, but TMs could not wear just trunks. Because biology.

As illogical as all trans ideology.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 10/03/2019 08:42

Really not fair for the girls. Could males really compete with females in female gymnastics?

I can’t imagine many males having the physique for it once they get to puberty.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 10/03/2019 08:41

It's not quite clear from the article whether girls can wear shorts or only transitioning boys. Tbh, I can't bear to start my Sunday by going and looking at yet another policy from a sports organisation that's throwing the rights of girls under a bus.

Controversially, the edict by British Gymnastics, which has a membership of more than 350,000 – the vast majority of whom are under 16 – bans coaches from telling parents their daughter is sharing a room with a boy who has declared themself as female

British Gymnastics said last night: ‘We believe our guidance on the inclusion of trans people is consistent with our safeguarding policies and have no reason to believe that it compromises anyone’s safety or welfare.’

Not being honest with parents about the presence of male people where girls are getting changed

yeah sure, no safeguarding issue here at all. move along people

what is wrong with them. have they been hypnotised or something?

and Flowers for Sanchez Manning, who has been highlighting this madness for ages

WizbetisaNizbet · 10/03/2019 08:39

I don’t see this ending well for British Gymnastics.

UndersAndOvers · 10/03/2019 08:38

I thought female gymnasts wore high cut legs so the extension of the leg could be seen by the judges. (Something like that - I don't watch much gymnastics). If so, how would the male gymnasts be scored for this in female competitions if they are wearing low cut outfits?

Saltovinegar · 10/03/2019 08:28

I don't know how they can say it's consistent with safe guarding policies. No one seems to have any sense in these organisations.

Plus if someone's wearing shorts and tights and everyone else is in a leotard it will be obvious they're male (apart from the fact it would take more than shorts to hide a penis and testicles).

I despair.
