Bloody hell BBC

Reading the BBC news online this morning and there is not one, but two stories about transgender people. One promoting the transition of a small child, and the other promoting sport for transgender athletes. The latter in particular looks like a direct attempt to counter the news discussion over the last few days in sport.

This isn’t news, it’s wartime propaganda.

Just seen the towel based argument. DH has always used a minimum of 3. After the best part of 40 years together; has he been trying to tell me something? Stop this madness.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 05/03/2019 14:09

Can't believe that after 5 years' plus worth of carefully-argued feminist refutation we are still being expected to accept towel-based womanliness quotients as some kind of given.

I am so very, very tired of this absolute fucking drivel

BettyDuMonde · 05/03/2019 13:41

This BBC documentary from 2017 (filmed in Canada) got shown once and then pulled from worldwide release/Iplayer.

Thanks for mentioning the Louis Theroux show I hadn’t realised it was still available

That butterflies show was a shambles

BettyDuMonde · 05/03/2019 13:36

The stuff about teen girls being taught to dress, apply make up and present naicely by older female relatives smacks of AGPs fetishising girlhood to me...

Daughterofmabel · 05/03/2019 13:35

The towel thing was a bit odd. My son uses about 4 towels when he goes in the shower so he must be very womanly
So does mine! And what the actual feck is 'feminine play'

trumptrump · 05/03/2019 13:34

I’ve been debating whether or not to start a thread on what has recently happened with Tommy Robinson at the BBC and the similarities with how the BBC is treating feminists.

(Btw: I am not a fan of Tommy at all!)

But, Tommy is accusing the BBC of conspiring with left wing groups to create a negative picture of him. Whether this is true or not, I don’t know. However, what Tommy is accusing the BBC of is the same thing we are... which makes me think that he may be right?

Notwotuknow · 05/03/2019 13:33

I'm also judging the parent of Antony. Some people will obviously do anything for 5 minutes of fame. Poor kid.

charlestonchaplin · 05/03/2019 13:31

And is anyone getting frustrated that the parents featured are always the mothers? The fathers are either absent or silent. We very rarely hear from the father of a child who identifies as transgender. That post was in relation to this comment.

charlestonchaplin · 05/03/2019 13:30

There was a Louis Theroux programme where the boy seemed to be acting the role he thought the particular parent he was staying with expected to see. Girl with mother and boy, with no apparent issues, with the father. When asked how he saw his future by Theroux, he seemed to see himself in the role of husband and father. That was the point at which his mother seemed to accept nothing was set in stone and to just let him be, without labelling or medicalising him. It's still available on BBC iPlayer.

I had a friend in university who was part of the trans community. I once asked her why so often we see MtF looking like drag queens. The answer was that a lot of trans people transition after puberty and so never had the chance to experiment growing up or learn from their parents about what looks good clothes and make up wise. So why then are these parents encouraging Autumn to wear lots of make up instead of teaching "normal" girl like behaviour???

I completely disagree with them putting this out there for all to see, it's not fair on Autumn. That said if Autumn did decide in the future they don't want this information out there, couldn't they apply for it to be taking down as part of the right to be forgotten?

Dergadgeghead · 05/03/2019 13:17

One towel, two towels - whatever, right? Confused

But interesting to hear the line about parent preferences because I was very much a tomboy growing up, hated 'girly' stuff, and my mother would sometimes excuse me by saying that when I was born my dad had wanted another boy (because he had only sisters and had longed for a brother).

I wonder if I subconsciously picked that up, and certainly that to my dad (not to say the whole of our civilisation) being a girl was inferior to being a boy. In fact my first instinct when I hear about a MtF trans person is to think it's crazy that anyone would actually want to be a woman - even though I'm a very happy (not at all pink-brained) woman now, and it's not exactly a level playing field either.

I've only heard about this, not a higher incidence of transsexualism.
Mind you, we're taking out a chunk of potentially gay adults by transing them in childhood so it might be the same phenomenon

WeRiseUp · 05/03/2019 13:12

Excuse the auto correct of trans

WeRiseUp · 05/03/2019 13:11

Every accusation is an admission with them

Yes.

It's always worth checking our Christine Burns and Transport Media Watch to see which turn its going to take and which spin is going to be put on. It's deliberate manipulation by highly manipulative people, not just harmless middle aged ladies in floral dresses wanting to peacefully get on with their lives. It's utterly brazen.

Popchyk · 05/03/2019 13:10

And look at those pictures.

Big close-up of the child caked in make-up, looking wistfully up at the heavens.

And all the pics have FRAN NORRIS (name of the mother) imprinted on them. Presumably the mother has thought ahead to ensure that a fee is due whenever someone uses the pics.

Himshethey · 05/03/2019 13:03

We were supposed to be reassured by the fact that Autumn had not been given any drugs at all and that it was all going very slowly. This was used to directly contradict the claims by the ex-Tavistock Chair that drugs had been administered after 2 or 3 sessions. BUT AUTUMN IS STILL ONLY NINE!!! Of course she’s not getting any drugs yet because she’s still a child and isn’t starting puberty yet. Do they think we’re thick or something?! It must be all very Jolly being told you can become a woman but not have to go through all the nasties of periods - you just get to grow lovely breasts and curves and can wear loads of make-up and gorgeous dresses and heels - being a woman is great isnt it?! (Let’s not talk about the vaginoplasty just yet eh?)

OldCrone · 05/03/2019 12:52

I don’t think it’s ethical for broadcasters to refer to ‘trans children’ at all. They wouldn’t refer to ‘Labour children’ or ‘Conservative children’ or ‘communist children’ or ‘fascist children’ would they?

They never talk about 'gay children' either, do they? If it's OK to talk about trans children, why not gay children?

Popchyk · 05/03/2019 12:51

Re: the Christine Burns thing.

Every accusation is an admission with them. Same with Edward Lord accusing Andrew Gilligan, Times journalist, of having a fetish for transgender people.

They are the ones doing the grooming. Or trying to. They have lost control of the narrative so this is them trying to get it back.

They must think we are all thick.

Mind you, it has worked with government departments, the police and the CPS. So they're bound to try the same tactics again.

BettyDuMonde · 05/03/2019 12:47

Only one towel used here too, btw.

Although I did once use about 50 scratchy paper towels when I forgot to take a proper one to the local baths.

OldCrone · 05/03/2019 12:46

And is anyone getting frustrated that the parents featured are always the mothers? The fathers are either absent or silent. We very rarely hear from the father of a child who identifies as transgender.

This programme was broadcast on BBC Wales in 2017. It struck me how enthusiastic the mother was about their child's transition, and how uncomfortable the father looked every time he was shown.

For Huw, a traditional cattle farmer, I could see it was a baptism of fire. The word ‘transgender’ was alien to him. He was struggling to come to terms with the thought of his son becoming his daughter...

BettyDuMonde · 05/03/2019 12:46

That’s just a clear admittance that Press for Change & Trans Media Watch have been grooming with protrans puff pieces for decades, isn’t it?

WeRiseUp · 05/03/2019 12:43

Check out Christine Burns' DARVO!

HawkeyeInConfusion · 05/03/2019 12:40

I am also appalled by that article on Autumn. I saw it on the bbc news front page (alongside the sports one) and my first reaction was 'They are really trying to push this'.

And as I only use one towel, and as a 9-year old I wasn't interested in make-up, had no desire to be a mother and had no aspiration to get married then I am definitely a man. Except I'm not.

Popchyk · 05/03/2019 12:40

Not Autumn's dad who phoned in?

Colour me surprised.
