Heard the last bit of Sharron on Today this morning. My goodness she's wonderful.

I find it a bit frustrating when the presenter says "well McKinnon says ..." that people tend to respond with "I completely disagree". It's a strong statement but it still frames it all as opinion, and agreement/disagreement. I'd like to hear "McKinnon says testosterone makes no difference" countered with "McKinnon is wrong." Because McKinnon IS wrong. It's not my opinion/your opinion in this case, it's fact/not fact.

ColdFingered · 07/03/2019 09:29

McKinnon also thinks that Sharron and McKinnon look alike
Surely an ideal subject for Private Eye's Lookalike letters - only this time, they don't look alike...

YogaDrone · 07/03/2019 09:28

Her majestic wonderfulness Sharron Davies also pointed out that if there are no rules around who can compete as a female that there will be less scrupulous people, organisations and countries who will take advantage of this and effectively force mediocre males to identify as women in order to complete. Yes, FFS, how obvious is that?

She scored so many hits with that interview completely showing up each of McKinnon's "facts".

Trans athletes should be competing in classifications as the para athletes do. This seems like the obvious "third space" option.

Doyoumind · 07/03/2019 09:26

I was coming to mention RM's bullying of Kelly Holmes as well. Specialized's immediate, woke response was on the side of RM but I'm not sure they know what they are getting into.

adultFemaleElf · 07/03/2019 09:26

Great to see Dame Holmes fighting back

adultFemaleElf · 07/03/2019 09:23

I’m watching to see how Specialized cycling company respond to RKs bullying of Dame Kelly.
We buy a lot of bike stuff in this house and I am happy to boycott a company that wants to silence women. Especially fucking awesome women.

changecounterextraordinaire · 07/03/2019 09:20

Sharon was brilliant, clear, concise. Hated the way Rachel McKinnon kept banging on that there is no scientific evidence that people born male have an advantage in sport - shame that Martha Kearney didn’t counter McKinnon’s claims with some, y’know, science.

SophoclestheFox - I’m 6’2”, sadly all flab rather than muscle Grin, dress in jeans and t-shirts, short hair, no make-up, not ‘feminine’ at all. Am just waiting for the day I am mistaken for a trans woman in the ladies loos...........

YogaDrone · 07/03/2019 09:18

I have had a girl crush on Sharron Davies since I was 13, she is, was and will ever be my shero. She was always my favourite Gladiator too Grin

I heard her and RMK on the Today program this morning and Sharron was awesome - so calm and sticks to the facts (although I'm sure the TRAs will pick up on her reference to females as YY instead of XX Grin )

With RMK it's all about looks - what someone looks like is apparently the most important thing Confused It's just so illogical.

It was great that Sharron had the second interview and so was able to refute all of RMK's garbage. Unusual because generally the TW gets the last word on the BBC.

I've deleted the BBC news app from my phone - it was doing my blood pressure no good.

bellinisurge · 07/03/2019 09:15

And it's not all about testosterone. It's about muscle mass, limb development, red blood cells, size of heart. Which gets advanced through male puberty as a matter of biological fact.

EcclesThePeacock · 07/03/2019 09:14

McKinnon also thinks that Sharron and McKinnon look alike??

If the BBC feature this ongoing story on their website, they really need a pair of photos.

Datun · 07/03/2019 09:11

I mean does McKinnon actually think, in their wildest dreams, that saying testosterone makes no difference, followed by the assertion that the IOC should eliminate it's reduction as a criteria, will ever, ever fly?

I want someone to address that with McKinnon. I want McKinnon on record everywhere saying that there should be no criteria. That men should be able to compete with women purely on the basis of some magic words.

Datun · 07/03/2019 09:07

McKinnon has been apparently been contacting people in Kelly Holmes' professional life and telling them she's a transphobe. One has said they will 'look into it'.

McKinnon also thinks that Sharron and McKinnon look alike?? So hats off to all the posters who called that one in advance.

Sharron comes across as completely neutral and sensible. And I I love how grown-up she seems compared to the spite and angst levelled at her.

SophoclesTheFox · 07/03/2019 09:06

I can’t be the only one who has a massive, helpless girl crush on Sharron right now Grin She was my favourite Gladiator back in the day. Classy, clever, strong, and a total goddess.

Tall women over forty are way, way beyond giving the measliest fuck about being called manly. I’m a muscly six-footer with huge shoulders. If we apply ladybrain science, in the way that it looks like Joss is trying to do (forcing distributions into binaries) then as I have a male height, I am a man.

Nope. I am a height that is more commonly seen in males. Still a woman.

WrathoftheWorstKlop · 07/03/2019 08:59

Someone has been busy editing Sharon's Wikipedia page adding details saying she is a transphobe.

Ffs, they don't let up do they?

And someone has been busy editing it back.

Just heard her on Today. She's brilliant. Calm. Sensible. Just what's needed.

ColdFingered · 07/03/2019 08:53

At last - finally someone who doesn't get drawn into side issues, but gets across her points. Eg listing the changes to boys at puberty. No side tracking onto intersex conditions or other points. And clear on when the changes to the Olympic rules will take effect.

CountFosco · 07/03/2019 08:52

She was totally awesome on the Today programme. Go Sharron!

starlingsintheslipstream · 07/03/2019 08:52

Sharron was brilliant - so calm and considered and what she said about competing in the 70s and 80s against the Eastern European nations who were routinely doping and dominating competitions was so relevant.

niceberg · 07/03/2019 08:48

I just heard the last minute or so - she was fab! Pulling no punches.

Cuntysnark · 07/03/2019 08:47

She was fucking brilliant!

leafinthewind · 07/03/2019 08:46

I agree with her - how can we ignore averages? Averages are why we have women's sports in the first place.

LizzieSiddal · 07/03/2019 08:45

Sharon was fab!

Mumsical · 07/03/2019 08:44

She's on R4 now

Cooroo · 07/03/2019 08:44

Sharon on Today now and is brilliant.
