"LOOKING FOR FEMALE SCRIPTWRITERS FOR TELEVISION

I work for Sid Gentle Films, the production company behind Killing Eve and The Durrells. We're launching a scriptwriting competition for writers who identify as female to get more fantastic screenwriters into an industry crying out for female voices.

It's called Thousand Films and is completely free to enter: thousandfilms.co.uk/

I really hope that some of you do!

A study by the Writer's Guild of Great Britain in 2018 revealed that only 14% of prime-time dramas and 11% of comedy is predominately being written by women. It's bloody shocking, but also in no way came as a surprise to women working in the industry, as I'm sure many of you are.

If you win, you get a prize package designed to kickstart your career, including the possibility of developing a script with Sid Gentle, a full expenses paid trip to the Edinburgh Television Festival and an industry bootcamp with the National School of Film and Television, and more.

To enter you need to identify as female, be a UK or Irish citizen, and be over 16. You can't be represented for your writing, though having any other form of agent is fine. We're looking for finished 30-60 minute pilot scripts for an adult audience. Other than that you can write what you like - go wild!

The deadline is 30th April.

Feel free to ask me questions in the comments but I won't respond to DMs (just trying to keep that golden work life balance in tact). You can also get in contact via our website or over email, [email protected]

We launched this competition today and it's the first year we've done it, so if anyone has any suggestions of where else I can let people know about it, please do share them with me."

adjective
1.
of or denoting the sex that can bear offspring or produce eggs

I would like to see a male to try to identify as that

zanahoria · 28/02/2019 16:23

Well they have already found one comedian, the writer of that advert

Charley50 · 28/02/2019 12:12

Pretty gutted actually as they made Killing Eve, the best show on TV last year (in my opinion obv). Maybe the title was a premonition!

MillytantForceit · 28/02/2019 08:09

"Terf Wars The Musical..."

I think it would be more of a pantomime:

"I'm a Lady!"

  • OH NO YOU'RE NOT!
  • "Oh Yes I am!"

Etc.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 28/02/2019 08:03

Oh and i wouldnt be keen on entering a script writing competition judged by people who don't understand the meaning of words

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 28/02/2019 08:01

As ive said before on here

Ive not got a massive issue over the word woman

If it changed to women and female, man and male i could probably have coped with the rage

But female...nah mate, you can't have that

But i think everyone knew female would be next

Helmetbymidnight · 28/02/2019 07:55

i saw this on fb and read it outraged to dh

i cant enter as i don't 'identify'as a woman, i just am one.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 28/02/2019 07:54

Cut out the hard bit; just self-identify as a very successful TV writer. You won’t even have to enter the contest.

JellySlice · 28/02/2019 07:54

Why is this being posted in Feminism? It's an advertisement for gender-non-conforming male writers. It's nothing to do with women.

Move along now. Nothing to see here.

Hmm
FemalePersonator · 28/02/2019 07:52

How about "Only Terfs and Horses"?

clitherow · 28/02/2019 07:48

Yes, I must admit I thought this was some first class goady trolling of MN grin

Me too, I swear I could hear Jessica Hyne's voice from W1A when I was reading it. These people obviously really exist!

Ereshkigal · 27/02/2019 21:59

oops sorry - I thought this person had been foolish enough to come here to advertise their competition. I think I really rather wish they had!

DodoPatrol · 27/02/2019 21:43

Someone should submit the TERF Wars musical

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 27/02/2019 21:40

Yes, bet Ms Glinner doesn't have representation. Plus given Pips Bunce presumably he'd not even need to id as female full time. Is there some cut off, can you ID as female for 10mins a week and still be trans and eligible for things like this or businesswomen of the year?

MillytantForceit · 27/02/2019 20:56

Maybe Ms Glinner should enter this?

donquixotedelamancha · 27/02/2019 20:49

So you don't have to actually Be a woman to enter the competition which aims to give women a chance in a male-dominated industry?

This is literally true, not exaggeration. If you read the T and Cs they don't mention female or woman. The scripts are anonymous.

Now if only we knew a male writer who was gender critical.....

@glinner. Have you ever considered writing a television script? I imagine you might be quite good. Comedy perhaps?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 27/02/2019 20:34

I’d email and tell them that women will be boycotting as a result of this crap.

Catquest1 · 27/02/2019 20:25

We have a local group that supports creative women. They recently advertised for self identifying women or those who identify as non binary for an event to mark international womens day.

Charley50 · 27/02/2019 20:22

FFS!
I've just emailed them. Will post the response when i get it.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 27/02/2019 20:13

Has anyone emailed them yet to ask ‘what’s the point’? I will later when I have some time.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 27/02/2019 20:12

Can my dog enter them? She can self ID as a human female? Maybe my hoover can enter? Or my car?

clitherow · 27/02/2019 20:08

notnowdennis · 27/02/2019 19:58

I cut and pasted this from another post online. I’m not from the company.

Have you actually ever bothered to read any of these feminism chat threads or are you a W1A-type spoof? I am a woman, I don't need to identify as female - bloody shocking eh?

Iused2BanOptimist · 27/02/2019 19:49

What's the point? Why bother looking for female writers if you don't care if they are actual women. Hmm
