I have just seen this on the www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/a3518988-Rachel-McKinnon-weightlifter-and-Abigail-Shrier#prettyPhoto thread posted by Clitherow and felt it needed a separate mention. If I was on twitter I'd follow him!

All the Zuby thing shows is how universally ridiculous men taking women's sporting medals and records is.

I've no doubt there are millions of men out there that think the same thing without necessarily holding any other feminist views or even respecting women on a general basis.

Many men will find it an absurd concept to laugh at for a couple of weeks but still not care that much about the actual impact it has on women's sports. A lot will take the 'and nothing of value was lost' attitude because women's sports is still often viewed as lesser. I get the impression their disgust over this comes from a place of disliking men they see as inferior or pathetic in comparison with men who heroically battle it out with other men.

I don't know if Zuby falls into this category because I haven't followed the story but it's a train of thought that is very prevalent in comment sections I've read on this issue.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 02/03/2019 17:18

as Barracker says, Zuby is just another man who wants to control women. His reasoning may be a little different to the males we've been seeing round here lately, but the end result is the same

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 02/03/2019 17:17

I'll certainly slate him for believing that women shouldn't be able to control their own fertility

but his assistance in the matter of showing how incredibly unfair it is for males to compete in women's sport is appreciated

WeRiseUp · 02/03/2019 17:15

Zuby is entitled to his views. At least he's got principles, you know where you stand with him and he is not pretending to be pro-feminist.

I would never have worn 'Team Zuby' gear but I am not going to start slating him either.

Perfect summing up Bicker

BickerinBrattle · 02/03/2019 17:05

We're going to have a lot of non-feminusr allies because the genderism issue is larger than feminism: it's about reality-based law and politics, totalitarian imposition of belief, science-denialism, the extreme privileging of feelings people used to have to,learn to manage themselves, and medicine gone rogue, particularly with children.

Freespeecher · 02/03/2019 16:58

Wait a sec, I thought you were all big Zuby fans?

Man, things move fast on here.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 02/03/2019 16:52

basically Zuby fits in the red conservatism / religion circle in the classic diagram

he understands that sex is physical and non changeable, but also thinks that lady brain is a thing and that women should accept the gender roles society wants to impose on them

he's alright jack, so no need to think about the challenges faced by women

Barracker · 02/03/2019 16:25

Yep, he appears to be a self important wanker. Arguing that women demanding bodily autonomy makes them slaveowners, which is quite the reversal of reality and failure of critical thinking for someone who apparently is Oxford educated.

So his position is that women's bodies are different from men's bodies, yes, and they are also still the property of men, not their own.

MRA: You're different and so I should get to control you
vs
TRA: You're not different and so I should get to control you.

Meh.

How about Glinner on the upper arm, raising his pipe when I flex?

Grin genius!

FloralBuntingIsObnoxious · 02/03/2019 15:51

The confused realization was my impression from reading lots of befuddled feminists on twitter seeiming to think that because the man agrees that men dont belong in women's sport, they can take it as read he will have had an epiphany about anything else.

Though, don't take this as a cross critique- I fully understand how desperate you can get for any glimmer of support and feel like you're losing your mind when things seem so bloody obvious. I'm just saying let's keep clear heads and focus, and we'll save ourselves from disappointment and wasting our time.

I am actually pondering a new tattoo myself. How about Glinner on the upper arm, raising his pipe when I flex?Wink

The more different voices that point out that the TRA position is bonkers the better. We are all going to be disappointed if we expect every one of those people to align 100% with feminist views.

I've always been against the idea that we all have to march in step on every single issue. My mother was an arch-feminist back in the 50's but I disagreed with her on a number of issues and that's fine in my book. I still loved her and appreciate the barriers she broke down for women.

Manderleyagain · 02/03/2019 15:08

Floral bunting is right. There was no reason to assume any kind of feminist opinions. This whole issue - and especially sport specifically - should be non partisan. People of all political persuasions should be able to see how daft it is.

Bowlofbabelfish · 02/03/2019 15:08

He can believe what he likes on any issue.

The positives for me are that he got the sports issue in front of a whole load of people who would never have thought of it and he’s one more voice saying ‘this is ridiculous.’

There doesn’t need to be any more than that.,I would imagine he’s never thought too much about feminism and his only exposure has been to the ‘you go girl/pole dancing is so empowering!’ Type.

The more different voices that point out that the TRA position is bonkers the better. We are all going to be disappointed if we expect every one of those people to align 100% with feminist views.

It was fun while it lasted

This.
We deserve some light relief now and then!

ILoveMaxiBondi · 02/03/2019 14:40

but we really need to stop getting so over excited at the faintest hint of support.

I agree, but really it’s so vanishingly rare that you can understand people getting excited when it happens.

crumpet · 02/03/2019 14:29

Well, not so much confused realisation (not sure where you got that from), more disappointment that the change in tack would dilute what good had been done. It was fun while it lasted, but at least there are other voices.

EweSurname · 02/03/2019 14:25

I don’t think he’s trolling either.

Even though I don’t agree with him on a lot of issues, it’s still refreshing to encounter someone who is up for discussing things.

And of course, he’s highlighted how easy it is for men to colonise women’s sports, which is something we do agree on.

FloralBuntingIsObnoxious · 02/03/2019 14:22

For crying out loud. He did a mildly funny tweet pointing out a glaringly obvious fact. It was useful in further raising the profile of this one specific issue. He's not Gender critical, he's not a proclaimed feminist of any stripe.

I am fully on board with getting the message out to all and sundry, but I can't quite get my head around the confused realization that he's also got some other views that don't gel with a lot of feminist thought. This was fairly obvious from the get go, wasn't it? I know it's cool when someone draws attention to the topic, but we really need to stop getting so over excited at the faintest hint of support.

Thank Zuby for acknowledging reality, sure. There's no need to join the fan club and get his face tattooed on yer leg because of it...

QuietContraryMary · 02/03/2019 14:18

I think he has his views and he's not particularly bothered about censoring them to appeal to anyone. I don't think he's trolling

crumpet · 02/03/2019 14:18

I’m sure there was an element - or certainly once he saw the reaction he got. He successfully struck a chord, so it’s disappointing that he seems to have moved on so quickly (and in such a direction).

ILoveMaxiBondi · 02/03/2019 14:12

Do you think he was/is just trolling and using this for PR?

ToeToToe · 02/03/2019 14:06

Zuby is really quite anti-feminist. The way he's arguing on twitter is making me, er, not like him very much at all. Sorry Zuby, I know you'll be disappointed Wink but I have to undeclare my love for you.

Still glad he did the weightlifting thing though - it's been very helpful to the women's sports issue.
