I have just seen this on the www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/a3518988-Rachel-McKinnon-weightlifter-and-Abigail-Shrier#prettyPhoto thread posted by Clitherow and felt it needed a separate mention. If I was on twitter I'd follow him!

I think we just maintain a pro-woman stance and agree with people when they do or say something pro-woman and disagree with them when they do or say something anti-woman.

I don't expect anything further from any man who has expressed a single pro-woman view - I find this generally avoids being constantly disappointed in the bepenised ones.

Again, I am not getting why him making a point about how unfair it is to have males competing with females means he has to have had some feminist awakening. Not too sure why some seem confused that all opinions do not match up to that of feminists, just because feminists have been the ones leading this for a fair while now, there are loads and lads of different people/belief systems that find TRAs and their demands and the law changes and such utterly batshit!

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 03/03/2019 09:33

I'm hopeful that the support and popularity Zuby has garnered through this will encourage other people to speak out

Zuby had little to lose, because let's face it, who here had heard of him before this? But maybe seeing how he has been received will encourage some bigger names......

reallyanotherone · 02/03/2019 19:23

Oh someone has just replied to one of the tweets saying “it’s homocide”

Dying to reply that no one wants to see the gays put to death....

Cross posted with floral, who beautifully illustrated my point that compassionate nuance is to be found on these boards Smile

Barracker · 02/03/2019 19:17

Even in the UK we've imprisoned women for ending their pregnancies.

You make a really good point with infidelity.
We can condemn something morally, but be horrified at the proposal to criminalise it, because we understand the concept of freedom.

If a doctor and his patient both know that terminating her pregnancy is the best healthcare outcome, and expressly is her autonomous wish, can we justify denying her this, let alone criminalising that doctor?

What should happen to a woman who is refused a safe termination, when we all acknowledge it's the safest thing for her?

I very rarely hear someone taking a personal moral view on abortion and yet understanding that it must still be legal and safe, because the alternative is to make it criminal and unsafe.

These boards, mostly.

FloralBuntingIsObnoxious · 02/03/2019 19:16

It's a rare pro life man that doesn't think the law should make it illegal to have an abortion, tbh. Way back in my fundy days, that was my position too, and I haven't yet met a man on that side of things who saw any kind of nuance at all.

Ime, which obviously isn't exhaustive, it's much more likely to be pro life women who understand the complexities - for reasons which should probably be obvious.

Funkyfunkybeat12 · 02/03/2019 19:12

Weriseup it’s also a crime for a woman to procure an abortion outside of what is legally permitted so yes it would criminalise women.

Nice that he directs his judgement at men too. Pretty meaningless though as men don’t get pregnant and would never need an abortion. If you don’t agree with abortion, don’t have one. Don’t try to police someone else’s body or mansplain something that you haven’t the faintest about (that’s to Zuby)

WeRiseUp · 02/03/2019 19:05

His view

WeRiseUp · 02/03/2019 19:05

I thought it was the person performing the abortion who would be breaking the law...

Anyhow, is that is view though? It is possible to take a moral position on something without thinking people should be criminalised for doing things you believe are immoral- eg - infidelity. I wondered if there was evidence he wants to change the laws/criminalise women.

Barracker · 02/03/2019 19:01

WeRiseUp
That is what abortion law is!

Either it is legal to have an abortion, a valid healthcare decision, or it is illegal and women are criminals for having them and should be fined/imprisoned/have a criminal record or whatever the criminal consequence is of taking a pill, having a d&c, taking a risky action etc.

Abortion laws criminalise women and their doctors. That's the point of them.

EweSurname · 02/03/2019 18:47

He illustrated one (obvious, in my opinion) position - that men competing in women’s sports was unfair.

It’s wonderful that he highlighted this to a large audience but this doesn’t make him anything more that someone pointing out the obvious.

The more this is in the public consciousness, the better!

BertrandRussell · 02/03/2019 18:36

Once again- a man looks promising then turns out to be an arsehole. Sooooo disappointed.

WeRiseUp · 02/03/2019 18:32

If you would criminalise a woman for her abortion

Is that what he believes?

Barracker · 02/03/2019 18:30

If you would criminalise a woman for her abortion, then it goes far beyond personal belief and into the realm of legally sanctioning women's bodies as property of the state.
It ventures into refusal of healthcare, even when it is in a woman's best interests.
It becomes a form of two tier humanity. Those who are free, men, and those whose bodies we can control for the benefit of others. Women. Resources.

I have respect for those people who personally reject abortion but uphold the principles of bodily autonomy and so reject abortion laws that criminalise women for choosing their own path to end their pregnancies.

WeRiseUp · 02/03/2019 18:24

No, he thinks WOMEN shouldn't have unprotected sex.

He definitely thinks men shouldn't have unprotected sex, or any sex I think, unless they are prepared to be a father. He doesn't absolve men from responsibility.

Funkyfunkybeat12 · 02/03/2019 18:11

vIs he against contraception? I didn't spot that. I thought he just believes in the sanctity of life and thinks men and women shouldnt have unprotected sex with eachother if they arent prepared to take responsibility for a baby - (pretty hardline for the modern times)

No, he thinks WOMEN shouldn't have unprotected sex. It makes no odds for the man, does it- he's not the evil witch having the abortion. He genuinely thinks women get to late pregnancy and think 'nah, can't be fucked with this- I'll have an abortion'. The way that undermines the trauma of the women who do have late-stage abortions just reeks of arrogance. Don't even get me started on the pressure on heterosexual women to have sex without a condom because it's not as good for the man apparently and is sooo much hassle. He's a misogynistic dick- please people don't try to stick up for him just because he did the deadlift thing.

WeRiseUp · 02/03/2019 18:08

Yes I think there is a blind spot to rape, child abuse and other forms of coercion which result in unwanted pregnancies.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 02/03/2019 18:06

ah, a man who talks about things he doesn't understand

what a novelty

reallyanotherone · 02/03/2019 18:05

That’s the impression I got too. Which I have to say is my own personal view. I wouldn’t have sex unless i could go through with a resulting pregnancy.

But being female, i realise for a lot of women that isn’t a position they are lucky enough to be in. Women and girls are under a lot of pressure to “put out”, from simply not wanting to split with a boyfriend at 14 to a long relationship with DA.

Which is why I will always be pro choice. ETOP will never be not needed.

Funkyfunkybeat12 · 02/03/2019 18:01

Apparently he thinks late term abortion is done out of convenience to women. I can’t even begin with how offensive that is. Fucking get in the sea you dick. It’s always the women’s fault isn’t it?

Barracker · 02/03/2019 17:44

As others have said, him recognising sex exists because it advantages him in some way doesn't make him any kind of an ally. It makes him a resource.

I've forgotten who said it recently - I think Natasha Chart - but setting aside purity politics and pragmatically treating those with whom we disagree as a resource is the clever thing to do, especially in times such as these.

If I see people that get us closer to our objectives as resources instead of allies I'll be far more likely to be able to achieve something worthwhile.

So, if a sexist dickhead inadvertently advertises the gross unfairness of identifying into women's sports, so be it.
I'll take that amplification of a message and it's benefits, whilst denouncing all his shitty views, and leave owing him nothing.

Nephilim1964 · 02/03/2019 17:43

Graham's comment on that thread was heartbreaking Sad

WeRiseUp · 02/03/2019 17:35

believing that women shouldn't be able to control their own fertility

Is he against contraception? I didn't spot that. I thought he just believes in the sanctity of life and thinks men and women shouldnt have unprotected sex with eachother if they arent prepared to take responsibility for a baby - (pretty hardline for the modern times) from having a quick look at his twitter just now. I might have missed some of it. He also thinks abortion is acceptable to save a woman's life/health or if the foetus has a life-limiting defect - so doesn't seem extreme on that front.

If he is actually pushing to take away existing abortion rights then yes, I'm happy to slate him, but if he just believes in the sanctity of life and judges abortion to be immoral, without thinking the law should cover those morals, then I i'll spend my energies elsewhere.
