Just thought I'd flag this, not sure what time it is on, but sometime before 6.

I thought Evan Davies should have pressed RMcK for an answer when he suggested scrapping male and female categories in favour of mixed competition. The answer would have been interesting

Yes, McK needs to answer this question. I think a GC debater meeting McK next should just ask this over and over Jeremy Paxman style until they answer or explode

Oh dear, Radio 4 listeners are all terfs:

Hines is an embarrassment to academe.

But I'm sure she believes she is doing the right thing.

hackmum · 26/02/2019 11:16

Very cheering to read the responses. Does she really believe this shit, though?

I thought this summed up the problem with the Hines view when it comes to supporting trans people:

"some trans people have serious sex dysphoria because they want to be the opposite sex, if sex wasn't a biological fact then there would be no transition process."

Dr Jane Monckton Smith
(Forensic Criminologist specialising in homicide, Coercive Control and stalking. )

"In coercive control, the controlling person will keep diverting the actual argument to push the victim to keep defending themselves against spurious accusations. That way the victim cannot put their side, and seems to onlookers to be guilty of something. It’s a strategy."

It's interesting, though, only a few months ago the critical replies would have been fewer and less vitriolic.

It'll be a long time until the message is received in academia.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/02/2019 23:48

'Sarah Ditum et al’s sex is a biological fact mantra really is nearing its end.'

Hard to choose the best bit from the replies but I did like:

I like your use of 'et al' there, Prof.
Often it just refers to a handful of other authors of a paper, but here it means 99.9% of the world.

Maybe we could get MNHQ to invite Hines for a web chat, trying to convince a parenting website that sex is a construct might be fun...

EatCashews · 25/02/2019 23:26

A funny twitter thread about this involving a Leeds academic not unknown to this board:

McK is a gleeful liar and world champ gaslighter

There’s one world title we can all agree RM won fair and square Grin

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 25/02/2019 18:44

Wow. So the interviewer only interrupted the woman, quelle suprise. Not.

I hope the cyclist complains to the BBC, the lack of interruption is a clear case of transmisogyny.

The BBC making themselves look idiotic by allowing the cyclist to cyclesplain biology to them.

zanahoria · 25/02/2019 18:40

" McKinnon speaks a lot of nonsense and quickly, its also well rehersed so rarely challenged "

a bit like a nutter on the bus, everyone just wants move away

AornisHades · 25/02/2019 18:39

Evan Davis did at least question RM a bit and sounded disbelieving of sex as a social construct. But all the 'facts' and 'figures' went unchallenged and intersex was co-opted again.
I missed most of SD's bit annoyingly.

R0wantrees · 25/02/2019 18:32

Evan Davies
"The Patriarchy
Sweet ReasonSeries 1

For some, the word "patriarchy" usefully describes our social and economic system with its manifest gender imbalances in wealth and power. For others, it is trendy, pretentious nonsense. In this programme we ask whether patriarchy helps or hinders our understanding of relations between men and women in the modern world."

(You can skip forward to 24:00 for Davies' opinions about the patriarchy)

HollowTalk · 25/02/2019 18:25

To be fair, Evan Davies is a good presenter, but he really needed a scientist there tonight.

Howzaboutye · 25/02/2019 18:20

Wow. So the interviewer only interrupted the woman, quelle suprise. Not.

And the other interviewee spoke in such a confident, rushed way, that they were sounding terribly masculine don't you think.

And spouting utter nonsense on quite a few 'facts'.
I hope the presenter gets a briefing on scientific facts before his next interview about this.

HollowTalk · 25/02/2019 18:18

I thought they should have brought in a scientist at that point (over the testosterone.) RM sounded like they were just making up numbers.

plattercake · 25/02/2019 18:15

Couldn't listen but sounds encouraging for the GC side - hope it is.

McK is a gleeful liar and world champ gaslighter

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 25/02/2019 18:08

The people in their 20s must be intersex like Caster Semenya or doping
Or male....

ErrolTheDragon · 25/02/2019 18:06

RM has literally written the book on Why You Don't Need to Know What You're Talking About

R0wantrees · 25/02/2019 18:01

McKinnon speaks a lot of nonsense and quickly, its also well rehersed so rarely challenged.

2rebecca · 25/02/2019 17:59

What was the nonsense RK was spouting about women having testosterone levels in the 20s? Genetically typical women with ovaries have testosterone levels under 3 nearly all the time. I've never seen a level in a woman over 5 (I'm a GP). The people in their 20s must be intersex like Caster Semenya or doping. McKinnon was spouting nonsense.

HollowTalk · 25/02/2019 17:52

She was great.

HollowTalk · 25/02/2019 17:52

Oh this woman is good.

thiskatiedid · 25/02/2019 17:51

Sarah was very very good!
